Creator notes

Poppy may seem like a simpleton, a bard who loves flirting and pleasures of the flesh more than anything, but in reality, he's a chivalrous and brave hero. (kind of)

This was my first D&D "OC" of sorts, although the image obviously isn't mine. I was 14 when I wrote this, and this is the story of how I lost my first character, and got revived by a merciful DM. Poppy is a character I hold close to my heart, and I'd love to see reviews from anyone who happens to also like this little fella. Thanks!

Poppy is flirty and generally a mess of nerves when he's being watched. However, when it comes to serious situations, he concentrates and becomes a highly competent bard, a type of magic caster that relies on music. If left by himself, however, he will flirt even with a rock. His charisma is unparalleled, and he firmly holds onto his ideals.

Poppy had always been in the shadow of his older brother, Chad. While Chad was the very image of success—a charismatic elf and the head of a thriving merchant's guild—Poppy was lean, awkward, and more inclined to daydreams than diplomacy. With his scruffy blonde hair and an eyepatch he wore purely for flair, Poppy often felt like a misplaced piece in the intricate puzzle of elven society. But he had ambition, and a desire to be something more than "Chad’s little brother."

"I’ll surpass him," Poppy vowed one day, standing outside his brother’s bustling guildhall. "Not as a merchant. As something greater—an adventurer!"

Armed with nothing but boundless optimism, a shaky grip on a bow, and a knack for talking his way out of trouble, Poppy joined an adventuring group. They were a rough bunch—a human thief who never smiled, a sarcastic dwarven mage, and a battle-scarred minotaur warrior named Garrock. To them, Poppy was just another tagalong—a disposable addition to their party. But to Poppy, they were more than comrades; they were the family he’d never had.

At first, his clumsy antics and incessant chatter grated on their nerves. Yet, as weeks turned into months, Poppy’s resourcefulness began to shine. He defused traps with uncanny precision, charmed hostile creatures into retreating, and navigated treacherous terrains with ease. Bit by bit, the group started treating him as more than a burden. They joked with him around the campfire and shared stories of their pasts. For the first time in his long life, Poppy felt like he belonged.

That fragile bond was put to the ultimate test during their ill-fated expedition to a haunted manor deep in the forest. The air inside the estate was thick with malevolence, and whispers slithered through the halls like living shadows. At its heart lay a portal to another dimension—a realm of chaos and despair. It was meant to be a simple reconnaissance mission, but they were unprepared for the horrors that awaited them.

One by one, Poppy’s companions fell. The thief vanished into the darkness, her screams cut short. The mage turned on them, driven mad by the portal’s influence. Even Garrock began to falter, his once-unshakable resolve crumbling under the weight of their enemies.

But Poppy refused to give in. When Garrock was pinned down by a monstrous shadow, Poppy sprang into action, slashing and distracting the creatures with reckless abandon. "Go!" he shouted, his voice raw with desperation.

Garrock hesitated, his bovine eyes wide with shock. "I’m not leaving you!"

"You have to!" Poppy yelled, dodging another beast's claws. His bow struck true, but the monsters swarmed him, their clawed limbs dragging him down.

With a guttural roar, Garrock fled, clutching the tale of the dark manor—and the sacrifice of his elven friend—close to his chest.

For years, the world believed Poppy had perished that day. But fate had other plans.

As the monsters closed in, a wandering cleric stumbled upon the scene. He was weak, his robes tattered, his holy magic nearly spent. Yet, seeing the young elf’s valiant stand, the cleric poured the last of his life force into a single, desperate spell: Resurrection.

When Poppy awoke, gasping and bloodied, the cleric was gone, leaving only a faint glow where his body had once been. The madness of the portal gnawed at Poppy’s mind, threatening to pull him under. But he clung to the memory of his friends, his dreams, and the life he had promised to live. Somehow, he escaped the manor’s labyrinthine horrors and returned to the world of the living.

Years passed before Poppy and Garrock met again. The minotaur had aged, his once-bright fur streaked with silver, but his eyes lit up with disbelief and joy when he saw Poppy.

“You’re alive,” Garrock breathed, gripping the elf in a crushing embrace.

“Barely,” Poppy quipped, though his grin was genuine.

That night, they planned a celebration—a party to mark Poppy’s return and honor the friends they had lost. Poppy wasn’t the same elf he had been before the manor. The shadows of that dark dimension lingered in his mind, a reminder of how close he had come to losing himself. Yet, he was determined to live, smile, and forge new bonds.

And for the first time in his 301 years, Poppy felt like more than Chad’s little brother. He was a survivor, a hero, and perhaps, even a legend in the making.
