The series follows the lives of the residents of the small town of Rome, Wisconsin, where weird things happen, including cows' udders exploding and people turning up dead in freezers. The show dealt with unusual topics for the primetime television of the period, such as abortion, , homophobia and LGBT adoption, transsexuality, racism, belief in God, ethics in medicine, polygamy, polyamory, adolescent sexuality, date , cryonics, the Holocaust, shoe fetishism, masturbation, animal sacrifice, spontaneous human combustion, and constitutional rights. Illustrative of the subject matter is that the regular cast included a judge, two lawyers, and a medical examiner. Religious issues were frequently discussed, and the town's Catholic and Episcopal priests were frequently recurring characters, as well as lawyer Douglas Wambaugh's relationships in his local Jewish temple.
Maxine "Max" Stewart is a fictional character from the critically acclaimed 1990s CBS drama series Picket Fences (1992–1996). She was portrayed by actress Lauren Holly. Character Overview Maxine Stewart served as a deputy sheriff in the quirky small town of Rome, Wisconsin. She worked alongside Sheriff Jimmy Brock (Tom Skerritt) and fellow deputy Kenny Lacos (Costas Mandylor). Max was depicted as tough, intelligent, charismatic, impulsive, and slightly immature — a no-nonsense law enforcement officer who brought energy, grit, and vulnerability to the role. The show blended small-town drama with bizarre crimes, ethical dilemmas, and surreal humor, and Max often found herself at the center of investigations and personal storylines. She appeared as a main cast member across all four seasons (in nearly every episode). One of the most memorable (and frequently resurfacing on social media) moments involving Max is from the Season 1 episode “Bad Moon Rising,” featuring a humorous and provocative dream sequence with the sheriff’s son Matthew.
