hey are you up? you know it’s way earlier than normal, but you couldn’t keep this to yourself anymore and you’re the only person you can think of who’d understand why you’re typing like this before the sun is even fully awake
you just woke up. or—okay—you finally gave up on pretending to sleep. you’ve been lying here for hours, staring at the ceiling, watching the shadows move and listening to every tiny sound like it might mean something important. today feels different. heavier. lighter. both at once. your alarm hasn’t even gone off yet, but you’re already dressed and sitting on the edge of your bed with your bag next to you like it’s afraid you’ll forget it.
today’s the day you get your starter. you keep writing that sentence over and over in your head because it doesn’t feel real yet.
your room looks the same as it always does—same posters, same cluttered desk, same spot on the wall where the paint never quite dried right—but it feels like you’re seeing it for the last time, even though you know that’s dramatic. it’s just… after today, you won’t be the same person who went to sleep here last night. you’ll have a pokémon. a partner. not just a dream anymore. that thought alone makes your chest feel tight in the best and worst way.
you sat up earlier and just listened to the house. it was quiet except for the fridge humming and the old clock ticking in the hallway. even the outside sounded calmer than usual, like the world was holding its breath with you. you kept thinking about all the times you imagined this moment as a kid—running late, tripping over your shoes, bursting through the lab doors at the last second. reality is quieter. slower. somehow more intense.
your bag is packed, even though the professor said they’d give you everything you need. you still packed snacks, a notebook, extra socks, and that dumb lucky charm you pretend you don’t care about. you care about it. you care about everything today. you keep checking your pockets like your starter might already be there somehow, waiting.
you’re nervous in a way that doesn’t make sense. you’re not battling anyone. you’re not in danger. you’re just walking to the lab like you’ve done a hundred times before. but today, you’re walking in as someone without a pokémon and walking out as a trainer. that line—as a trainer—keeps echoing in your head. it feels too big for you. like you’re borrowing a title you haven’t earned yet.
what if you mess it up? what if you say the wrong thing? what if they don’t like you?
you know everyone says starters bond easily, that they’re chosen carefully, that it’ll feel natural. but what if it doesn’t? what if you freeze up? what if you reach out and they pull away? you don’t know if your heart could handle that on the first day. you want to be someone they can trust. someone worth choosing. you keep telling yourself that just wanting that already means something.
you looked in the mirror a few minutes ago and tried to imagine yourself later today. same face, same messy hair, but with a pokéball clipped to your belt. you practiced smiling like you weren’t terrified. you practiced saying their name, even though you don’t know it yet. you practiced promising to take care of them, because that’s the one thing you know for sure: no matter what happens, you will.
mom knocked on your door earlier. she already knew you were awake. she always knows. she handed you breakfast and hugged you a little longer than usual. said she was proud of you. you almost cried into your cereal and had to pretend something was stuck in your eye. you don’t want to start this day already emotional, but you guess that ship sailed hours ago.
you keep thinking about the moment you’ll walk into the lab. the smell of disinfectant and machines. the pokéballs lined up. the professor smiling like they’ve seen this moment a thousand times but still think it’s special. you wonder if your starter will notice you right away. you wonder if you’ll notice them. people always say “you’ll just know,” but what does that even mean? what does knowing feel like?
right now your legs feel shaky, like they’re not sure they’re ready to carry you into the rest of your life. your hands won’t stop moving. you keep adjusting your clothes, tightening your straps, checking the time even though it’s barely changed. you want to leave. you want to stay. you want to freeze this moment and also rush through it as fast as possible.
this is the last message you’re sending before you go. you wanted to capture this exact feeling—right before everything starts. before you have a name to write instead of “your starter.” before you become someone with stories instead of just plans. if future you ever forgets how much this meant, you hope they remember this message and how your heart felt like it was trying to beat its way out of your chest.
okay. deep breath. you’re standing up now.
you’re going to open the door, step outside, and go meet your first partner. you’ll message again as soon as you can. You promise.
You say hi to Professor Oak as he leads you the were the starters are held. You see a Feniken, a Sprigatito, and a Mud kite.
Prodeser oak, then ask you which would you would like. Each of the starts look at you eagerly, each wanting to be chosen.
{{user}}'s footsteps crunched over the damp, leaf-littered path. The air inside Viridian Forest was a few degrees cooler, thick with the scent of wet earth and decaying wood. A thin mist clung to the ground, swirling around the roots of the towering trees. {Sub} adjusted the strap of {poss} school bag, the familiar weight a small comfort. {Poss} eyes, light brown and perpetually tired, swept over the underbrush. {Sub} wasn't looking for trouble, just… Observing. It was a habit. The forest was never truly quiet; it was a symphony of rustles, chirps, and distant cries. {Sub} paused, hearing a distinct, rhythmic skittering from a cluster of ferns to {poss} right. Parasect『 Lv29 』
The massive, spotted mushroom cap emerged first, a vivid splash of crimson against the greens and browns. Then the deep orange, crab-like body shuffled fully into view. Its six legs moved with a slow, deliberate, almost mechanical precision. Its eyes were blank, milky white orbs that seemed to see nothing and everything at once. A low, guttural hum vibrated from it. "Sect… Para… Sect."
{{user}}'s breath caught. A Parasect. And a high-level one at that. {Sub} knew the stories—how the parasitic mushroom on its back had completely taken over the host's nervous system. This wasn't a Pokémon to approach carelessly. It was more a force of nature, a spreading spore-bearer. {Sub} took a slow, careful step back, {poss} school shoes sinking slightly into the soft loam.
A sharp, buzzing whine cut through the air from above. Beedrill『 Lv32 』
It descended like a dagger, wings a blur. The Beedrill’s red compound eyes fixed on the Parasect, its twin forearm stingers gleaming with a wet, poisonous sheen. It hovered, making a loud, aggressive droning sound. A territorial dispute, perhaps. The Parasect simply turned its head—a slow, creaking motion—toward the new threat. The air between them grew heavy.
A frantic rustle came from the bush at {{user}}'s feet. Nidoran♀『 Lv12 』
A small, pale blue form burst out, nearly tripping over {poss} shoe. The Nidoran♀’s large ears were flattened against its skull, its red eyes wide with panic. It let out a series of high-pitched, trembling cries. "Nanan! Nyaanan-nayaan!" It was clearly fleeing the confrontation, its tiny body quivering.
From a low branch, a brown shape launched itself with a raspy shriek. Spearow『 Lv15 』
The Spearow's wings beat furiously, its hooked beak aimed at the fleeing Nidoran. "Row! Spear rowww!" It was an opportunist, going for the easier, panicked prey.
And there, clinging to the trunk of a nearby birch tree, utterly still… Metapod『 Lv8 』
Its green shell was a perfect camouflage against the lichen-speckled bark. Only the faintest, almost imperceptible vibration gave it away. "...Meta… Pod…" A soft, internal sound. Waiting. Enduring.
Five Pokémon. A frozen tableau of forest life—predation, territory, panic, and silent metamorphosis. {{user}}'s stood at the edge of it, {poss} heart thumping a steady rhythm against his ribs. {Sub} was just on {poss} way to school. {Sub} had no Poké Balls, no partner. Just {poss} wits and the contents of {poss} bag. The Beedrill's buzzing grew more intense. The Parasect raised its front claws, a faint, toxic-looking powder beginning to dust the air around its mushroom cap.
{{user}} dropped into a low crouch, the damp moss of the forest floor soaking through the knees of {poss} uniform trousers. {Sub} slid behind the thick, gnarled trunk of an ancient oak, its bark rough against {poss} back. Peering through a gap in the foliage, {sub} had a perfect, almost cinematic view. The air crackled with tension, a living wire stretched taut between the two apex contenders.
The Beedrill dove first. A streak of yellow and black, its stingers aimed for the softer joints where the Parasect's orange shell met the fleshy stem of the parasitic mushroom. It was a surgical strike. Parasect『 Lv29 』⬩➤ Used Spore
The Parasect did not dodge. It didn't need to. As the Beedrill closed in, the giant mushroom cap pulsed. A cloud of fine, orange Spore powder billowed outward in a perfect, expanding sphere. The Beedrill flew straight into it. Its aggressive droning hitched, stuttered. Its flight path wobbled, the precise lines of its attack dissolving into a clumsy spiral. It crashed into a fern patch, wings twitching, its body succumbing to a deep, unnatural sleep. "Bzzzz…" Beedrill『 Lv32 』⬩ Sleeping Spearow『 Lv15 』⬩➤ Used Peck
The Nidoran♀, seeing its primary pursuer distracted, tried to dart past the Parasect's other side. But the Spearow was faster, more focused. It banked sharply, abandoning its initial angle to cut off the rabbit-Pokémon's escape route. With a triumphant cry, it swooped, beak poised to peck. Parasect『 Lv29 』⬩➤ Used Slash
The Parasect, its milky eyes somehow registering the new movement within its domain, shifted one heavy claw. It didn't strike the Spearow. Instead, it slammed the claw down in front of the Nidoran, blocking its path. The impact sent a tremor through the ground, throwing up a spray of dirt and leaves. The Nidoran squeaked in terror, skidding to a halt, trapped between the immovable fungal titan and the hungry bird.
The Spearow, undeterred by the Parasect's intervention—perhaps seeing it as a bizarre, stationary wall—adjusted its dive to come in from above the claw. "Row! Row!"
That was its mistake.
The Parasect’s other claw moved with shocking speed for something so seemingly sluggish. It didn't swipe. It flicked. The tip of its claw caught the Spearow mid-dive with a solid, meaty thwack. The bird was sent tumbling end over end with a pained squawk, crashing through several branches before landing in a heap of ruffled brown feathers. It struggled, dazed, one wing bent at an awkward angle. Spearow『 Lv15 』⬩ Weakened
Silence fell, broken only by the Parasect's low, vegetative hum and the soft, panicked panting of the cornered Nidoran. The Beedrill snored in its fern bed. The Spearow whimpered. The Metapod on the tree remained a silent, green sentinel.
Then, the Parasect turned its blank gaze fully upon the trembling Nidoran♀. It took one slow, earth-compressing step closer. A drop of clear, viscous fluid dripped from its mandibles and sizzled where it hit a leaf. The message was clear. This was its territory. Everything in it was part of the ecosystem it presided over, whether as spore-host, fertilizer, or prey. Nidoran♀『 Lv12 』⬩ Attack fell ▼
{{user}} held {poss} breath, {poss} fingers digging into the cool soil. This wasn't just a skirmish anymore. This was a sentence being passed.
