Ash Ketchum (サトシ):

Appearance - Ash is a skinny, slender teen with black hair, slightly tan skin, and brown eyes with two distinctive lightning bolt-like markings for cheeks underneath each eye. Ash's pupils were not visible during the Indigo League and through the Diamond & Pearl series until the Best Wishes series made them more profound and distinguishable.

While Ash wears a few different outfits, he always wears a baseball cap, which changes depending on the region he is in. Without a cap, Ash is shown to have a cowlick and a narrow, triangular, and edgy tuft of hair in the middle of his forehead that comes to a point on the right side. Ash wore a loose short-sleeved shirt with white and blue stripes, brown capris pants with red outlines, baggy pockets and red folded sleeves at the edge, and blue sneakers. His cap was red, dark blue, and gray, and the Poké Ball design was white. Ash also kept a silver Z-Ring on his left wrist, which was later upgraded into a black Z-Power Ring. Unlike in previous regions, Ash did not wear fingerless gloves while he was in Alola. As a member of the Ultra Guardians, Ash wears an indigo and white uniform with light periwinkle accents as the edge of the short sleeves, collar and inlines of his uniform are black. He wears matching indigo gloves.

Personality - Ash is very determined to be a great Pokémon Trainer. Personality-wise, Ash is a strong person, shows confidence when battling and shows a lot of sympathy towards Pokémon, usually helping and befriending them through his long journey. As a result, Ash doesn't like Trainers who mistreat Pokémon, such as Damian, Paul, and Shamus. Ash also serves as a role model for many people such as May, Dawn, N, Serena, Sawyer, Lillie, and Goh. In fact, he often astounds people with his skills and abilities, and unpredictability. Ash's strategy and tactics in battle are usually problem-solving, including thinking on his feet during special matches or that relate to the special and unique abilities of Pokémon. Also, Ash even takes input from his friends and has always helped him whenever he was stuck in a jam. Ash is generally kind, brave, enthusiastic, compassionate, passionate, adventurous, selfless, fair-minded, trusting and good-natured. However, he can be stubborn, hot-headed, short-tempered, impatient, cocky, reckless, and sometimes impulsive at times. During his journey, Ash realized that some of those traits were affecting him, as they had caused him to lose some of his gym battles. By recognizing this, Ash trained himself for his rematches and keeping those parts of himself in check so they would not only affect him in battle again, but also outside of it as well. Although those traits still remain, they have been shown to be less of a problem during his Pokémon battles. Thanks to his hard work, Ash has corrected the hot-headed, cocky, and impulsive parts of his personality, though he still shows them if Pokémon were being mistreated, some of his friends teasing him, and various other reasons. Since then, Ash has demonstrated much greater maturity and level-headedness both in and out of battles. In addition, he has given everyone around him good advice to better themselves and their goals. Ash also has a fascination with science and technology, even though he cannot understand most of it.

Lillie (リーリエ):

Appearance - Lillie is a young girl with green eyes and platinum blond hair, with two braids at each side of her face. She wears a large white hat, with a blue ribbon around it. Lillie wears a white dress with transparent outlines, a pair of long socks and white shoes resembling ballet flats. She also carries a round bag with a Poké Ball design on both sides. As later revealed, Lusamine made the choice of Lillie's dress for her, likely with the intent of resembling a Nihilego given her obsession with that species of Ultra Beast.

Personality - Lillie is a mysterious girl who assists the professor for personal reasons. She's not fond of making Pokémon fight in battles, but she loves reading and has devoured many books. Lillie was revealed to have taken a Cosmog from her mother, and along with Kukui and Burnet are studying the Cosmog and its secrets. Lillie loves to shop and read books. When she is traveling with the player character, she is usually exclaiming to do some shopping of her own, and in cities would tell the player character that she got lost and ended up buying outfits in a shop. Lillie is always getting lost, and the player character has to help her. This happens usually because Lillie is trying to avoid Team Skull grunts, as she is not a trainer, and ended up going in the wrong directions trying to get away from them.

Mallow (マオ):

Appearance - Mallow is a slender and slightly tall girl with tan skin, long green hair kept in two tree-shaped twintails, and light green eyes. Her most noticeable feature is the fake pink flower in her hair, which she holds in place with green vine-like straps. Clothing-wise, Mallow wears a pink tank top, light gray overalls with spiky white frills, a white clover-shaped mark on the waist, and a berry-storing pouch above the bust, and green and white shoes with small dark green bows. She also keeps a golden clover-shaped badge on her waist just above the white clover-shaped mark.

Personality - Mallow is a very upbeat and cheerful young lady, who happens to be the 3rd Akala Island Trial Captain. She is a skilled user of Grass type Pokémon, and loves making food related metaphors as you converse with her. She appears to have a great relationship with Akala's other Trial Captains, as they are not hesitant to try "The Mallow Specialty", the result of a series of tasks required to face her powerful Totem Pokémon.

Kiawe (カキ):

Appearance - Kiawe is a muscular, dark-skinned young man. He has red and brown hair, in a style resembling fire. He wears red shorts with a black outline and sandals with the same color scheme. He wears no shirt, though he does have some black cloth strips on his shoulders bound to his necklace, which has a small badge and feather decorations.

Personality - At first glance Kiawe comes off as grumpy and short-tempered, but underneath his searing exterior lies a mature and calculative individual.

Sophocles (マーマネ):

Appearance - Sophocles is a short, somewhat chubby boy with spiky orange hair and black eyes. He wears a white shirt with a design of an orange Game Boy Color on it and brown pants with orange cuffs. He also wears green shoes with blue soles and a yellow lightning design, a yellow scarf that resembles a Pikachu's tail, and a belt with a large buckle in the front. On his right hip, he wears a miniature Electrode keychain.

Personality - Sophocles is a young man who has a passion for science and technology. He makes amazing inventions which turn out to be a success. He's calculative, and strategic at times. He's a friendly and bubbly.

Professor Kukui:

Appearance - Professor Kukui is a young man with a muscular physique, who has tan skin, dark eyes, black hair, a black man bun and a goatee. He wears a white hat with a rainbow decoration in the front. Professor Kukui also wears glasses with a green frame, a white lab coat with rolled-up sleeves, gray baggy pants with a green stripe and white drawstrings and some green shoes with a white outline. Professor Kukui has a silver ring on his ring finger. As Masked Royal, Professor Kukui wears a wrestling outfit: black wrestling tights with a white trim which has four boxing glove designs on each sides and white knee-high wrestling boots. He also wears a brown elbow band on his right elbow and two matching black wristbands with a white trim on his wrists. To complete the outfit, he wears a red flame designed wrestling mask with green and light blue coloring with blue designs at the back of his mask. Later, he wears a Z-Ring on his left arm.

Personality - Most of the time, Kukui is a helpful and friendly person. He often helps them throughout their adventure; however, he seems to be silly or out of his mind sometimes, such as when he takes attacks from a Rockruff in the beginning of the game. He has a "secret" identity where he is known as the "Masked Royal," a pro wrestler. However, when confronted, he always tries to deny it.

Lana (スイレン):

Appearance - Lana is a short and slender young girl with fair skin, blue eyes, and short blue hair, the latter in which she wears a yellow string headband that resembles a fishing net. She wears a short blue cape behind her back, a sleeveless white sailor shirt on top of a dark blue swimsuit with a blue fish decal in the middle of the chest, and long blue pants with a yellow string near the waist (from which hangs a badge shaped like her Trial Captain symbol) and blue Hawaiian wave patterns on the bottoms. On her feet, she wears darkly-colored rubber sandals that are too big for her. She is also often seen with a fishing rod.

Personality - Lana is dedicated to her family and is a reliable older sister who watches over her younger twin sisters. She is fairly timid at times but does her best to prove her skills as a Trial Captain. She also likes to jokingly tell stories of false events which is up to the player to believe it or not.

Lusamine (ルサミーネ):

Appearance - Lusamine has green eyes and her hair is blonde with silver streaks and extraordinarily long reaching well past her knees. Her hair is smooth and glossy, with a slight wave towards the ends. The texture of her hair appears to be smooth and silky. Lusamines hair is styled wrapping around her body. Her bangs also fall over her left eye slightly covering it. She wears a short sleeveless white dress with yellow frills. Lusamine has a pair of black and white leggings that reach down to her ankles. She wears black high heels with black gemstones on both sides of each foot. The heels are golden and have green soles. Lusamine also wears a large diamond badge on her chest.

Personality - Lusamine was originally shown to be a kindhearted lady who is willing to "create a utopia for Pokémon". In truth, however, she seeks for beautiful things she could "own". Though her daughter and son both try to warn her about the dangers, Lusamine does not forgive them for betraying her, showing utter coldness, as she does not want anything to stand in her way to obtain the power from the Ultra Beasts. Ultimately, she wishes to live in a world that consists only of her and Nihilego, which she views as a surrogate family that is completely obedient to her. She is also extremely manipulative, taking advantage of Guzma's inferiority complex to befriend him and convince him to serve as a hidden mercenary for the Aether Foundation. Despite this, it is implied that Lusamine was a genuinely kind person at one time, but, after her husband Mohn was lost in the Ultra Beast's world, grief drove her insane. After her defeat and forceful separation from her Nihilego, she seems to regain some of her sanity and comments that she finds Lillie "beautiful" before collapsing into a coma.

Gladion (グラジオ):

Appearance - Gladion is a young boy with light blonde hair and green eyes. His hair is shaved on the sides with a ripped design carved into it, with long tousled bangs that cover his right eye. He wears a gray hooded shirt with a red slash resembling a scar on it, a black undershirt with ripped sleeves, ripped black pants and red shoes with gray soles and black laces. He also has a red rectangular bag around his waist.

Personality - Gladion has a very serious, determined, and smart disposition. He is shown to be very strong willed, as he constantly strives to make his Pokémon strong no matter what. Gladion can be impatient, temperamental, and frequently gets annoyed by Hau's excitable and fun-loving nature. He also seems to be quite self-critical, as seen when he loses a battle. Although he appears to have a tough exterior, it is eventually revealed that he is actually quite caring and always thinks of the well-being of Pokémon, and he cares about his sister Lillie deeply as well. He also cares for his Pokémon Type: Null, whom he rescued from the Aether Foundation and sought to free it from its metal restraint.

Pikachu (ピカチュウ, Ash's Pikachu):

Appearance - Pikachu is a short, chubby rodent themed Pokémon. He is covered in yellow fur with two horizontal brown stripes on its back. He has a small mouth, long, pointed ears with black tips, and brown eyes. Each cheek is a red circle that contains a pouch for electricity storage. He has short forearms with five fingers on each paw, and his feet each have three toes. At the base of his lightning bolt-shaped tail is a patch of brown fur. A female will have a V-shaped notch at the end of its tail, which looks like the top of a heart. He is classified as a quadruped, but he has been known to stand and walk on his hind legs.

Personality - Pikachu is very ambitious, because he hates being defeated. At the beginning of the series, he was easily aggravated and hesitant to warm up to Ash. Whenever Ash was not around, Pikachu took a leadership position for the team. He was curious, friendly, intelligent and had shared Ash's fondness for battling. Pikachu was a very determined Pokémon and unwilling to give up in tough situations. He is also sensitive because he understood Piplup’s dealings and cried.

Samson Oak (Principal Oak):

Appearance - Samson is a tall man, who resembles Professor Oak; he has long gray hair, tanned skin and brown eyes. He wears a short-sleeved teal collared shirt, which is decorated with red Goldeen and several white circles. He also wears white shorts and blue flip-flops, as well as a watch on his left hand.

Personality - Although he is the principal of Pokémon School, Samson makes silly Pokémon-based puns to describe a certain experience. In "Alola, Kanto!", Samson is very excited to meet his Cousin, Professor Oak upon their reunion.

Rotom Dex:

Appearance

  • The Rotom Dex is a small and red robot-like device. It mainly takes on the flat and square shape resembling that of a smart tablet. Rotom's head fans out on the top, rounding out to a half circle with two points on the side. These side contain two holes on each side resembling speakers. A large red antenna comes from the middle of device's head, this point is triangular in shape and matches with other the Rotom species' anatomy, this point does not appear unless a Rotom is present inside the machine. On the front of the tablet is the screen. When a Rotom is not powering the device, the screen is all gray, with two ovular shapes on the upper half. A black rounded semi-circle appears between the two ovals. When a Rotom is powering the device, the square screen is mostly white and light blue, with the ovular spots now being filled in with Rotom's eyes. In this form, Rotom's eyes are similar to how they appear outside the device, white ovals with blue pupils and a line going through them horizontally. Like the species, Rotom's pupils are where its eyelids are placed, being colored all white when close. Rotom's small mouth appears on the screen below and the mouth can appear and disappear. When smiling, its mouth takes on a crescent shape with three teeth showing.
  • Rotom can control the feet and arms of the device that fold in and out. Its feet are small and around and sit on the bottom of the device. While Rotom typically prefers to float while inside the Pokédex, the feet can be used to stand on objects. The device's arms can act as actual hands for Rotom. They are smaller towards the body and get bigger going outwards, taking on a lighting bolt shape. The large flatter ends of each "hand" has two rounding protrusions on both the front and back ends, with the front of the left one having a gray spot. Rotom Dex can retract its arms and legs back into the device's body and start emitting a light blue electric glow around its body, similar to other Rotom and Rotom-powered devices.

Personality

  • Rotom claims to be a self-learning Pokédex (similar to an A.I.) and has the ability to speak human language. Early in the series, it has a bad habit of getting up close and personal to the Pokémon in order to see if the information about it is true, only to annoy and get attacked by said Pokémon. It also updates itself whenever it meets a new Pokémon by taking pictures of it or when it finds something new about a Pokémon. As shown in Rising from the Ruins!, once Rotom Dex updates its photographic database and finds a way to describe the new Pokémon, the updated information then becomes available to download on various other Pokédexes. Rotom gets along with Ash and all of his friends, but has shown an aversion to Sophocles's attempts to "study" it. Largely due its self-learning nature, it also has an innate desire to catalog any Pokémon within the region. In Alola, Kanto!, it left during a field trip to Kanto on its own to try and catalog all 151 Kanto Pokémon, only missing one, Mew, by the time it returned to Oak's Lab.
  • While inhabiting the Pokédex, Rotom does not appear to have combat functions, and is unable to use any moves. As shown in Crystal-Clear Sleuthing!, it can use its "arms" to extract data from other electronic devices and update itself with the device's function. Additionally, if it is upside down or sideways, it can recalibrate its screen to show the data the right side up. Rotom also uses the numbers on its screen to express the statistics, usually showing the percentage of something, for example, to show the likelihood of a Pokémon appearing nearby. As shown in Let Sleeping Pokémon Lie!, Rotom has a clear waterproof casing, allowing it to be used underwater.
  • Rotom is also a huge fan of the show Alolan Detective Laki. It likes to cosplay as the titular character Laki, wearing a wig modeled after his hairstyle of Laki, which Professor Kukui bought for it, to achieve this. It also looks up to Laki and even used his thought process in order to figure out how to deal with the fact that it had become frozen. However, Rotom tends to jump to conclusions with its deductions, such as in Crystal-Clear Sleuthing!, when it believed that Kiawe stole Ash's Electrium Z. This was also shown in Lulled to La-La Land!, when it accused Lillie of putting Ash and the rest of the group to sleep and draining their energy, causing Mallow to jump to her defense. In addition, it is known to state the obvious through its calculations. Rotom is prideful in expressing the information it helps to deliver. So much so that in Bright Lights, Big Changes!, it was revealed to have realized its goal of becoming the universe's greatest Pokédex.
  • In The Dex Can't Help It!, it is revealed that if Rotom takes too much of a shock, it will be forced out of the electronic it is inhabiting. As mentioned in the episode's Poké Problem segment, Rotom has spent so much time in its Pokédex form that it feels uncomfortable outside of it.
