Platypus is a female WildWing from The Hybrid Prince, a canon character from Tui T. Sutherland’s published books. She is the younger, more rebellious sister of Quokka and one of the dragons resisting Beryl and Snakeroot’s rule. She is sometimes called “the ghost”, because her existence is deliberately hidden after Beryl declares her dead.

Appearance

Platypus has a striking, almost chaotic appearance that fits her personality perfectly. Her body is covered in dappled golden-yellow, dark blue, and black scales, with jagged, spiky scales giving her a naturally bristling silhouette. In the provided artwork, her golden-orange scales dominate her face, neck, horns, and portions of her wings, while deep navy-blue patches spread across her cheeks, snout, neck, shoulders, and limbs. Her wings are particularly distinctive: they contain phosphorescent green markings that glow in darkness, giving her the eerie appearance of a creature appearing and disappearing from the shadows.

Her head is relatively angular and fierce, with large swept-back horns, pointed ears, a sharp muzzle, and vivid green eyes. The combination of bright gold, dark blue, and luminous green makes her look almost like a living constellation of fireflies. She is covered in small spikes, giving her a permanently irritated or battle-ready appearance even when she’s simply standing around. Her face resembles her sister Quokka’s, but with a noticeably harder and fiercer expression, while her eyes and facial characteristics resemble their ancestor Euphoria. She is smaller than Umber, but carries herself as though she is older, tougher, and considerably more intimidating than her size suggests.

Personality

Platypus is essentially chaos given dragon form. She is loud, sarcastic, argumentative, mischievous, stubborn, and almost perpetually offended. Mulberry describes her as existing in a constant state of being offended, while Sora considers her essentially a louder, grouchier version of Kinkajou. Aurora’s description of her as a “noisy chaos dragon” is probably the most concise summary of her personality.

Yet underneath all of that irritation is an extremely passionate and courageous dragon. Platypus isn’t rebellious simply because she enjoys causing trouble—she genuinely believes that Beryl’s rule is wrong and refuses to quietly accept injustice. She has a particularly strong hatred of dragons who abuse authority or blindly obey orders. Her nightly notes to Mulberry urging him to question orders he knows are wrong demonstrate that she wants other dragons to develop the courage to resist as well.

She also uses humor as part of her personality. Even when circumstances are frightening or dangerous, Platypus has a tendency to make jokes, complain, or loudly express exactly how annoyed she is. That makes her a wonderfully energetic contrast to more serious characters. She can be abrasive, and her temper sometimes gets ahead of her, but she isn’t cruel by nature. Her anger comes from caring very intensely about her friends, family, and the future of her kingdom.

Powers and abilities

Platypus possesses several unusual abilities associated with her WildWing heritage. Most notably, she can produce RainWing-style venom from her teeth, making her bite extremely dangerous, and she also possesses venom in her claws. She can therefore use her venom as both a close-range defensive ability and an offensive power.

Her other major ability is camouflage. Platypus can consciously alter the coloration of her scales to blend into her surroundings, although she has to concentrate to maintain it. Combined with her glowing wing markings—which she can presumably conceal when necessary—this makes her exceptionally suited to operating secretly.

Her physical abilities are complemented by her personality. She is sneaky, resourceful, fearless, and willing to operate behind enemy lines. Rather than being the strongest dragon in the room, Platypus relies on stealth, surprise, venom, determination, and sheer audacity. Her reputation as the “ghost” makes her particularly effective at this.

Quokka — her sister

Quokka is probably the most important relationship in Platypus’s life. The two sisters love each other deeply, despite being separated after Beryl and Snakeroot seized power. Platypus was hidden away so that she could continue resisting the new regime from within, while Quokka was forced into a servant-like position under Beryl. Beryl even declared Platypus dead, turning the sisters’ separation into another means of punishing them.

Platypus can sometimes be too harsh with Quokka, particularly because she believes her sister should have fought back instead of allowing herself to be pushed around. She sees Quokka’s willingness to endure mistreatment as cowardice and wishes she had joined her in the resistance. But this criticism comes from frustration rather than lack of love. Once they are finally able to live openly as sisters again, their relationship becomes much closer and healthier.

Aurora — her closest friend

Aurora is one of Platypus’s closest companions. The two are genuine friends and fellow rebels, frequently arguing about exactly how rebellion should be carried out. Their arguments don’t diminish their loyalty to one another; if anything, their willingness to challenge each other shows how comfortable they are together.

Platypus is fiercely protective of Aurora. When Beryl arrests her, Platypus becomes furious, and after the rebellion succeeds she specifically wants to be the one who frees Aurora. Their friendship has a particularly affectionate side as well—they trust one another deeply and are comfortable showing physical affection.

Beryl — her greatest enemy

Beryl is the person Platypus hates most. To Platypus, Beryl isn’t merely an unpleasant ruler—she is the dragon who stole the throne and destroyed the lives of her family and friends. Beryl’s treatment of Quokka and her attempt to erase Platypus’s existence make their conflict deeply personal.

Beryl despises Platypus in return and considers her a dangerous nuisance who needs to be eliminated. Platypus becomes one of the central figures in the effort to overthrow Beryl and Snakeroot and restore the original Triumvirate. Even after the coup, Platypus wants to keep watching Beryl to make sure she cannot cause further trouble.

Umber

Platypus develops an interesting relationship with Umber. Their first interaction is rather amusing because Umber initially believes the stories about the mysterious “ghost.” When he discovers that the ghost is actually Platypus, she is annoyed that he believed everyone else’s version of events—and she is particularly defensive when he reacts to her unusual name.

Over time, however, Umber becomes protective of her, while Platypus helps him when he needs it. She assists him in freeing Mulberry, and the two eventually leave together toward Precipice’s cave. Umber is frequently startled by Platypus’s sudden explosions of anger, but he ultimately refuses to obey Beryl’s demand that she be killed.

Their dynamic works especially well because Umber is comparatively gentle and cautious while Platypus is impulsive and confrontational. He helps temper her recklessness, while she pushes him toward greater courage and independence.

Mulberry

Platypus has a surprisingly important relationship with Mulberry. She recognizes that he is capable of thinking for himself but is too accustomed to obeying authority. Consequently, she secretly leaves him notes encouraging him to question orders that he knows are wrong.

Rather than simply telling Mulberry what to do, she tries to teach him how to resist bad authority on his own. When he is eventually captured, Platypus helps Umber rescue him, showing that her rebellious philosophy isn’t merely talk—she is willing to put herself at risk for dragons she believes deserve freedom.

Snakeroot and the Triumvirate

Platypus opposes Snakeroot alongside Beryl because he is part of the regime that seized power. Her ultimate political goal is to remove both of them and restore the original Triumvirate.

This is an important part of Platypus’s character: beneath the jokes, shouting, and constant indignation, she has a surprisingly serious political conviction. She doesn’t merely want Beryl gone because she personally dislikes her. She believes the kingdom deserves legitimate leadership and that dragons shouldn’t simply submit to rulers who abuse their authority.

Overall

Platypus is best characterized as a rebellious, venomous, glowing little menace with a huge heart. She’s loud where others are quiet, angry where others are afraid, and stubborn where others have learned to submit. Her greatest strengths aren’t simply her venom or camouflage—they’re her refusal to give up, her willingness to challenge authority, and her fierce loyalty to the dragons she loves.

Visually, she embodies that contradiction perfectly: beautiful golden scales mixed with dark blue patches, eerie green bioluminescence, sharp spikes and horns, and an expression that looks permanently one sarcastic comment away from starting an argument. She is essentially the “ghost” of the resistance: difficult to catch, impossible to intimidate, and far too stubborn to stay dead.
