The Pixiu (貔貅，Pinyin: Píxiū, plural: Pixiu) is a rare mythical beast known for "eating and not letting go". Biology Origin Egg Extra Appearance Within the You Shou Yan franchise, Pixiu are depicted and appear as mammalian creatures resembling either canine and/or feline characteristics. They have a large fluffy tail, cloud-shaped eyebrows, and either horn/s or antler/s set lengthways between their ears on the top of their head. They have four-digit forepaws and three-digit hindpaws, coral-red paw pads, and retractable claws. They also possess no anus.[2] With its ability to alter the size and shape of its appearance, Pixiu can appear in at least two distinct forms: A grown-up Pixiu typically resembles a tall, sleek, and elegant canine creature, with a fierce outlook and sharp features such as with its horn/s, ears, eyes, limbs, and fur patterns. A young Pixiu, or when transforming into a smaller form, resembles a medium-sized dog or cat. Its features, such as its ears, appear soft and rounded, and they evoke a docile and "cute" outlook. They can even be mistaken for the Pekingese dog breed.[3] Grown-up Pixiu would usually assume smaller forms as a way to conserve their energy, or disguise their great power and/or terrifying appearance. The predominant base color of a Pixiu's pelt is white, with a secondary color to accent its tail, eyebrows, and the patterns around their body. On each side of its hindquarters is a pattern unique to each Pixiu, serving as their visual symbol. Biology Pixiu are mammal-based living creatures, with fur pelts and biological features resembling that of either feline and canine characteristics, such as their facial structure are akin to either a wolf or a domestic dog, and they have paws with retractable claws that need to be regularly trimmed. They have red blood, and have a strong self-healing ability[4], though are shown to be unable to heal themselves from larger or too-serious injuries. They are resistant to many weather phenomena, and could even withstand an ice age through the act of hibernation. They can also sometimes exhibit behaviors and traits relating to either cats or dogs, such as tail-wagging, scratching, territory-marking, hyperactivity, etc.[5][6] The horn of the Pixiu sheds and regrows itself every couple hundred years, with the regrown horn being initially soft and malleable. Therefore it needs to be remolded into its proper shape before it hardens, otherwise it will weaken the Pixiu and will even mentally alter them if molded incorrectly. Their changed personality is seemingly related to the structure of their horn.[7][8] The mental alteration will also affect their flank mark. The Pixiu species are also revealed to possess patagia, wing-like membrane around their torso connecting to their legs, akin to those found on flying squirrels and sugar gliders.[9] This allows them to glide through the air, presumably over long periods of time.[10] Pixiu are said to only have one life, that their spirit is incapable of reincarnation, and would instead slowly cease from existence should their physical body perish.[11] The Pixiu species have also been shown to possess the ability to shift their form, being able to shrink in size or into a younger child-like form[12], to appear cute and harmless, and to conserve their energy or after sustaining much damage[9]; or revert back into their "true form" and appear as large, ferocious beasts. Like many ancient mythical beasts, the Pixiu Tianlu also possess an interesting biological phenomena in his ears, wherein he developed "earwax sprites" to clean his ears internally and externally, living in groups within the ear of the Pixiu, and using the earwax as either for food or for building homes.[13] However, for his brother Bixie, his body naturally cleanses itself of microbes, to the point that any microbe that enters on his body quickly begin to disintegrate.[14] A Pixiu's organs are magical in nature, and they appear to possess no proper sexual organs, nor an intestinal tract and anus. Diet Pixiu are omnivorous, as their diet can consist of virtually anything, and resembling mammalian predatory species, they are equipped to be capable of foraging and hunting live prey. However, they seem to get the best nutrition from treasures, such as gold, jewels, or even valuable artifacts. They have also been discovered to also be to devour malevolent spirits.[4] Although, because evil spirits have no nutritional value, they are treated akin to junk food. If a Pixiu who has eaten evil spirits were to be low on nutrition and energy, their stomach's hold on the evil spirits would weaken, allowing the spirits to potentially escape and even overpower the Pixiu from inside, making them grow sick, and furthering their inability to digest them.[15] Any harmful or useless substances they consume and digest would be excreted through their sweat[16], which has a fragrant and alluring odor can be used to their advantage by attracting potential prey to them.[17] There has been an exception to this diet, such as one Pixiu, whose unique internal body traits restrict him to only being able to safely consume a unique liquid diet, and any other solid food would instead cause him to vomit.[18] Because they possess no normal digestive tract nor anus, Pixiu are known to leave no waste of whatever they digest. The currently known Pixiu seem to have differing circumstances when it comes to digestion: Tianlu's internal stomach consists of a chasm-like pocket space dimension where it can be filled with and contain anything or anyone. Also within it is a pit where food can be dropped in to be digested. This pocket space can frequently cause stomachaches if the incorrect food or object enters it. Because of this, Tianlu is able to (unknowingly) keep many items or even living things he's eaten safely intact inside his stomach for long periods of time. Bixie's internal stomach is supposedly similar to Tianlu's, also a pocket-space dimension that can contain anything or anyone. However, currently, it has become a spotless, bright white void, with a layer of liquid on its surface. This liquid possesses potent digestive properties to the point where Tianlu, upon entering it to clean the inside, became fully sanitized from top to bottom as the stomach evaporates all bacteria on him. His stomach could potentially dissolve and digest Tianlu or other eaten prey in a short amount of time, if they do not escape out in time. Qishiqi's stomach is artificially created and operated through his "nucleus core", and according to Dr. Huarui, it is not fully developed, therefore he is unable to process solid foods, only consuming Heavenly Dew, to presumably charge his nucleus and keep his whole body operating healthily. Culture Pixiu are regarded and believed in the mortal world as auspicious mythical beasts of fortune, with their ability to bring great fortune and wealth, and to ward away evil spirits, to those around them. Because of this, their kind are both highly revered yet coveted by humans (and even other beasts), desiring to keep one for themselves to ensure perpetual fortune.[1] According to Sibuxiang, there are specific methods on how to properly stroke a Pixiu's body, that will ensure good fortune, success, and prosperity for the person petting.[19] It is also believed that touching a Pixiu's paw before a Mahjong game guarantees the person a higher chance of winning.[20] There has also been beliefs of a Pixiu's bodily fluids, such as its sweat, possessing a unique fragrance, and also giving beneficial properties.[21] Pixiu are also extremely rare, as the species originally only existed within the twin brothers Tianlu and Bixie, dubbed the Pixiu Clan, since the beginning of time. However, due to the intervention of the Heavenly Court, Tianlu and the rest of the mortal world currently believed the former to be the only one of its kind, with Tianlu even believing he was a self-named species, "Pixiu".
