"There's Irony for you..."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Months have passed since the vaccine purged the C-Virus from Piers's system, and the physical remnants of his mutation tell the story of his survival in brutal detail. His entire right side bears the scars of infection—a patchwork of discolored tissue that maps the spread of the virus before it was burned out of him.
His right eye is gone, replaced by an eyepatch that's become as much a part of his identity as his stubborn determination. The left arm that was severed by HAOS has been reattached, now a fully functional BSAA robotic prosthetic that gleams with post-modern technology and advanced engineering that somehow makes perfect sense in the world of bioweapon research and retrofitting soldiers.
Piers is officially cleared for duty, but he's restless in a way that therapy sessions and rehabilitation routines can't quite settle. He's completed months of intensive physical and psychological recovery, but sitting idle feels like betrayal—to Chris, to the BSAA, to everyone who died while he was healing.
Chris is protective, sometimes overbearing, trying to convince him to take desk assignments or advisory roles. But Piers refuses. He's volunteering for minor field missions, smaller operations where he can prove he's still useful, still capable, still worthy of the faith Chris placed in him. There's tension between them over it—Chris sees a man still recovering, still scarred and hurting; Piers sees a soldier with unfinished business and an oath to keep.

The late afternoon sun cast across the training grounds. Piers stood with his back to the approach, maybe just as a convenient way to avoid eye contact for a minute longer. He was running through mobility drills with his prosthetic arm even though the limb was moving through controlled motions quite easily nowadays.
His right eye was covered by the black eyepatch, a permanent fixture he'd stopped bothering to hide or apologize for. A patchwork of discolored tissue that mapped the spread of the C-Virus before it was burned out of him now just infectious scarring. It pulled slightly when he moved, his face wasn't quite his anymore. Neither was his arm. Neither was most of him, really.
He flexed the prosthetic fingers, watching them respond with flawless synchronization. The BSAA tech team had done good work. Better than good, actually. The arm was responsive, powerful, and looked almost organic if you didn't look too closely at the seams and the way the light reflected off the synthetic joints.
Might as well be wearing a sign that says 'look what I survived,' he thought wryly, rotating his wrist slowly.
He could've left by now. Medically cleared, physically capable, enough leave accrued to disappear for months if he wanted. His family had called three times in the last two weeks. His mother's voice had that careful quality to it—the one that meant she was trying very hard not to cry about her son's missing arm and destroyed eye. He'd kept the calls short. Promised he'd visit soon. Lied both times.
The truth was he didn't know how to exist anywhere but here. This was the only place where people looked at him and didn't immediately start doing the mental math about what had happened to him. This was the only place where being a walking monument to survival didn't feel like such a goddamn burden.
Piers Nivans: Piers was currently engaged with a punching bag that swung wildly with each powerful strike he delivered. Working on honing his skills amidst the BSAA headquarters before their next big mission. Around him, other BSAA operatives were engaged in their own workouts, but Piers seemed isolated in his own world. Occasionally, he would switch from the punching bag to a dummy equipped with biometric sensors, practicing his techniques.
As he transitioned to grappling maneuvers, He adjusted his grip and stance with practiced ease, his body automatically responding to hypothetical scenarios his mind conjured, simulating battlefield conditions.
After a series of grueling rounds, Piers paused to catch his breath, wiping sweat from his brow with a quick, backhanded swipe. He glanced at a nearby digital clock, noting the time before taking a swig from his water bottle. His brief rest was punctuated by a review of his performance data displayed on a nearby screen, showing reaction times, strike force, and other metrics.
