Pichu (Japanese: ピチュー Pichu) is an Electric-type baby Pokémon introduced in Generation II.
It evolves into Pikachu when leveled up with high friendship, which evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone.
Pichu has an alternate form called Spiky-eared Pichu that is exclusive to Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, also making appearances in Pokémon the Series and the Pokémon Adventures manga.
A special Pichu called Ukulele Pichu is the player's first Partner Pokémon in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs.
Contents Show Biology Pichu is a small, ground-dwelling rodent Pokémon with pale yellow fur. Its ear-tips, collar, and tail are black and angular. Pichu's pink cheek pouches can store small amounts of electricity, and its tiny nose looks like a dot. Pichu is classified as a quadruped, but it can walk easily on its hind legs.
Pichu is not yet skilled at storing electricity in its youth, so it may accidentally release a jolt if it's amused or startled, though it gets better at this as it grows older. The electric pouches on its cheeks are small, so they cannot store much electricity, and it shocks itself even if a little bit of energy leaks out. However, the electricity is still strong enough to zap human adults despite Pichu's small size, but it also surprises itself in doing so. Pichu can more easily charge itself with electricity in the presence of thunderclouds or dry air, so one can hear static electricity crackling coming off it. When it plays with others of its kind, they may end up shorting out electricity and releasing sparks that startle them and make them cry. However, they also do this intentionally by touching tails to build up courage. Though some find Pichu to be cute, those who want to live with it must prepare themselves for its electric jolts. Its liveliness is tied to how much electricity it stored in its cheek sacs, so it plays very energetically when they're fully charged. Pichu primarily lives in forests, though it has also been depicted to thrive in urban areas. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, it is known to discharge uncontrollable electricity while sleeping due to its inability to store electricity properly. The crackling sound of static electricity can be heard while it sleeps.[1] Pichu, along with Pikachu and Raichu, is related to Pachirisu.
Pichu and its evolved forms are the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Volt Tackle.
Forms A particular Pichu has a unique form called Spiky-eared Pichu. It has three spikes on the tip of its ear, but looks otherwise the same as a common Pichu. According to Professor Elm, Spiky-eared Pichu has traveled through time with the Mythical Pokémon Celebi; He also adds that, due to this, it is unable to evolve. In Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl, Pichu was shown to love Grepa Berries.

A Pichu Egg in Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver Main series Major appearances Pichu Brothers The Pichu Brothers are a pair of Pichu who have appeared several times, including in Pikachu & Pichu, Camp Pikachu, several episodes of Pokémon Chronicles, and Pichu Bros. in Party Panic. The design of one of the brothers is similar to that of Ash's Pikachu and Sparky, in that it has a scruff of fur on its ear.
Spiky-eared Pichu A Pichu with a spiked ear, known as Spiky-eared Pichu, appeared in Arceus and the Jewel of Life. She helped Pikachu and Piplup find the keys for the jail cell that held Ash, Dawn, Brock, and Damos. The Spiky-eared Pichu made a few further appearances during Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl.

Pichu also has the lowest base HP and Defense stats of all Electric-type Pokémon. The Pikachu-colored Pichu was the first Pokémon to be given out over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection outside of Japan. Together with Magikarp, Rattata, Ninjask, Goldeen, and Seedot, Pichu is the easiest Pokémon to catch in Pokémon Ranger, with only one loop necessary. In Pokémon Adventures, Yellow was the one who gave Pichu its species name, creating it as a combination of the name of Pibu's parents, Pika and Chuchu. Pibu and one of the Pichu brothers have a hair tuft at the top of their heads. Unique to its playstyle in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Ultimate, Pichu receives self-inflicted damage when performing moves that utilize electricity, such as Thunderbolt and Volt Tackle. Pichu is game director Junichi Masuda's favorite Pokémon from Generation II.[3] Concept and development Pichu was designed by Ken Sugimori.[4]
Early design of Pichu In the Spaceworld '97 demo, Pichu appears to be based on the Pokémon known as Pichū (ピチュー). It resembled a smaller Pikachu with rounder ears and body.
Cultural impact In 2002, the country of Niue issued a $10 commemorative Pokémon silver coin featuring Pichu on one side and the national coat of arms on the other.[5]
Merchandise Pichu was featured as an air-pump toy with moving ears in the 2001 McDonald's promotional Pokémon toys. Pichu was featured in the Poké Ball Evolution Surprise set in the Jollibee Pokémon toys. Origin Pichu seems to draw inspiration from squirrels and various other rodents. Additionally, according to Junichi Masuda, Ken Sugimori came up with the idea for Pichu when Game Freak staff were trying to figure out a Pokémon to be the "next" Pikachu.[4] Its Shiny variation is inspired by Pikachu's standard coloration, hence why it's called "Pikachu-colored Pichu".
Name origin Pichu may be a combination of ピカピカ pikapika (onomatopoeia for sparkling), チューチュー chūchū (onomatopoeia for the squeak of a mouse), and possibly プチ puchi (petite), as well as being a contraction of Pikachu.
