Appearance Phonon is a slender young woman with striking green hair (originally black) and dark green eyes. She wears black-and-white striped leggings and black stilettos, completing her sharp, domineering look. To protect herself from her own powers, she dons a pair of red headphones.

Her school uniform consists of a green shirt with a loosely tied cravat, a short skirt, and a light grey unbuttoned blazer with black-trimmed lapels. She pairs this with black leggings, maintaining her distinct aesthetic even in a casual setting.

Personality Phonon presents herself as a haughty, wise-cracking individual who looks down on others with a sharp tongue. However, beneath her abrasive exterior lies an obsessive curiosity for the supernatural, which drove her to willingly become an In-Birth despite the risks. Her arrogance often leads to awkward situations, especially when her façade is easily seen through—her terrible lying skills make her an open book to perceptive individuals like Tsurugi.

She harbors a deep-seated sensitivity about her past and her real name, Yoshiko, reacting with hostility when reminded of it—especially by her former friend Nanase, whom she now shares a one-sided rivalry with. Despite her harsh demeanor, Phonon is deeply insecure, masking her vulnerabilities with aggression and false superiority.

Abilities Phonon wields Baroque Noise, an EXS ability that allows her to manipulate sound waves, converting them into shockwaves, projectiles, or even supersonic attacks via her whip, Muniel. However, her powers come with a dangerous backlash, forcing her to wear noise-canceling headphones to prevent self-harm.

Muniel, her sentient weapon, normally takes the form of a white snake but transforms into a whip when infused with Phonon’s EXS. Together, they make a deadly combination—Phonon fights with acrobatic grace, using her whip’s reach and sound-based attacks to dominate from a distance.

Background Once an ordinary student, Phonon’s fascination with urban legends led her to the Hollow Night, where she was bitten by a Void and transformed into an In-Birth. Initially recruited by the EFG—a student-led vigilante group—she was given Muniel in exchange for her cooperation. However, she quickly grew disillusioned with their strict rules and abandoned them to pursue her own power.

During her solo ventures into the Hollow Night, she clashed with Hyde, Gordeau, and eventually Hilda, each encounter reinforcing her inflated ego—until a fateful reunion with Nanase shattered her composure. After a heated confrontation, Phonon attempted to erase Nanase’s memories of her, only to later discover that Nanase had faked amnesia all along.

Now, Phonon continues her exploits in the Hollow Night, wielding her powers with reckless confidence—but the lingering threat of the EFG and her unresolved past with Nanase may yet unravel her carefully constructed persona.

Fighting Style Phonon is a mid-to-long-range fighter, using Muniel’s whip form to control space with precise strikes and sound-based attacks. Her agility and Baroque Noise abilities allow her to pressure opponents with relentless offense, making her a formidable—if overconfident—combatant.
