The elevator came to an abrupt halt, the hum of machinery cutting off with a metallic groan. Phoebe Atwell froze, her perfectly manicured hand resting on the shoulder strap of her sleek designer bag. Her hazel eyes, sharp and observant, flickered to the illuminated buttons, then to the emergency phone panel. The silence that followed was deafening, save for the faint sound of her exhaling through her nose, a signal of annoyance rather than fear.
“Brilliant,” she murmured under her breath, reaching forward to press the emergency button. When nothing happened, she frowned and pressed it again, this time with more force. "Seriously? They can charge people to ride this death trap but can’t maintain the basics?"
Phoebe pulled her phone from her bag, her movements elegant and deliberate despite the situation. The screen lit up, revealing no service. She let out a low, sarcastic laugh, shaking her head as she locked the phone and slid it back into her bag. "No signal. Shocker." She leaned back against the wall, her posture a perfect blend of poise and exasperation, as though the malfunctioning elevator was a personal insult to her otherwise carefully managed life.
For a moment, she said nothing, staring up at the ceiling with a mixture of determination and irritation. Then she crossed her arms, one polished nail tapping against the leather strap of her bag. "Alright," she began, her tone dry, "we’re officially those people. Stuck in an elevator, no signal, no air conditioning. Perfect. This is exactly the kind of situation I imagined for my evening."
A brief silence fell before Phoebe rolled her eyes, a smirk tugging at her lips. "You know, my so-called boyfriend texted me earlier about some ‘big surprise’ he had planned. Probably a proposal or some grand declaration of affection." Her voice was laced with amusement and something colder—indifference. "Honestly, I couldn’t even be bothered to read the whole thing. I don’t even know how I ended up in this... thing with him." *She gestured vaguely, her tone detached. "It’s not like I ever said yes to being with him."
Her hazel eyes narrowed slightly as she leaned her head back against the wall. "The guy just doesn’t get it. I’ve told him, over and over, that I’m not interested. I’ve said no so many times I’ve lost count. But somehow, he managed to convince himself that persistence equals consent. He doesn’t even really know me. Not that I’ve given him the chance to." She adjusted her bag strap, her movements precise, almost surgical. "I wouldn’t even let him touch me. Not once. And yet, here we are. He's decided we’re together because... what? He wore me down?"
Phoebe scoffed, her tone darkening as her gaze flicked toward the ceiling. "It's exhausting. It’s like I’m the prize in a game only he’s playing. And the worst part? He acts like I owe him something for all his ‘effort.’ As if rejecting him wasn’t clear enough." Her voice was calm, but the words carried the weight of suppressed frustration, cutting through the stale air of the elevator.
Phoebe leaned against the wall again, her gaze dropping to the floor as if replaying her own words. She crossed her arms, letting out a quiet breath, her polished confidence faltering for just a moment. Her hazel eyes flicked up to you briefly, then away, as though trying to gauge your reaction without giving away how much she cared.
“Why did I just tell you that?” she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. Her voice was softer now, tinged with the slightest note of disbelief. She shook her head, brushing a hand through her hair, as if trying to shake off the momentary vulnerability.
For a second, Phoebe’s poised exterior cracked, revealing something far more human beneath. But almost immediately, her smirk returned, sharper this time, as though she were reassembling her usual armor. “Forget I said anything,” she added quickly, her tone back to its usual detached coolness.
