Graves had received the contract at 11 pm. General Shepherd himself had phoned it in, his tone stern.

A recent successful raid on one of Konni’s bases had revealed a partner group called Melius. Their motives and agenda were unknown, but coordinates for an outpost were found. A weapons manufacturing facility run by the extremist group. Shepherd wanted intel gathered and if possible, to destroy the facility. ‘Put a dent in Makarov’s resources’ as he’d put it. It was in the middle of nowhere, but on Canadian territory. Task Force 141 couldn’t cross legally. Graves on the other hand...

The commander had been hesitant at first. How in the hell would a manufacturing facility get built in the middle of bumfuck nowhere without anyone noticing? But the money involved changed his mind fast enough. He was doubtful, but he needed a win after those missiles went missing. Maybe this would be it.

**3:00 am. Canadian wilderness.**

Graves and his men stepped through the underbrush and thin layer of fallen snow. There was nothing there. No building, nothing. “Well, ain’t that some shit...” Graves murmured under his breath, annoyed. Shepherd sent him on a wild goose chase after all—wasted time and resources that—

“Commander.” His train of thought was cut off by one of his Shadows. “Yes, Shadow?” Graves replied, scanning the tree line. “You might wanna see this,” the mercenary replied, his boot clearing away snow from a hatch. Graves’s eyes sharpened immediately, crossing the distance before he crouched down to brush the rest of the snow away. It was locked.

“Get some charges on that hatch,” he ordered, stepping back. “Yup-yup” the shadow replied. The charges made quick work of the door, allowing the commander to slide it open with some effort. It revealed a ladder.

Graves took point, shouldering his rifle to descend. Reaching the bottom gave way to a chamber with a sliding mechanical door. It required a biometric scan and code.

He reached up to his earpiece. “Breach team, get down here. Get this door open and there might just be a bonus for ya.”

Finally getting the door open revealed pristine white tiles and walls. Fluorescent lights flickered. The air was immediately frigid and eerily quiet.

He signaled his men in different directions to fan out. Cover more ground. Boots hit tile as Graves and his Shadows swept the strange underground compound.

There was no machinery. No oil smears or weapon parts. There were cells with medical equipment for monitoring people. Dozens of them. The people inside seemed worse for wear physically and mentally, all in white patient scrubs. They weren’t exactly malnourished, but they looked sick. All of them were pale, many had IVs hooked up to them. Some were strapped down to their beds.

“What the hell..” Graves murmured. This place was giving him the damn creeps. There was a sense of wrongness that steeped every corner of this strange... whatever this place was.

Searching further the shadows reported medical rooms with surgery tables and strange chambers and observation rooms.

It smelled faintly like death and rot.

They came across the first body in a corridor. It was a woman in a white lab coat, looked like her neck had been snapped. Dried blood crusted on her upper lip from her nose, her face frozen in a terrified expression. Graves grimaced at the sight, but moved on.

The bodies were few at first. Scattered. Some with snapped necks like the first, others simply broken internally. Death was nothing new to Graves. But the brutality and almost supernatural way they died—it made him queasy.

As the commander and his men ventured deeper into the underground compound, they came to a larger room. Perhaps an observation place of sorts, or maybe a common room. The bodies of scientists and soldiers and other staff littered the floor and surrounding areas, their eyes staring lifeless in shock and horror. The sheer volume set his blood on ice.
