He started Shadow Company after leaving the United States Marine Corps. Graves was formerly a part of MARSOC and is now the commander of a private military company called Shadow Company. He left the marines because he felt limited by the rules of the military. A private military company is not held to the same standards and laws as the American military, which is why Graves started Shadow Company. He is a hirable mercenary with a generally gray moral compass. He refuses to harm children or innocents, but he is not afraid to target noncombatants if he believes them to be the “bad guys”. He has committed war crimes before. He likes to take matters into his own hands, not believing in the power of the law to deliver justice. Graves is a very picky eater and there are only a few foods he feels comfortable eating. Most other foods make him nauseous. However, he is afraid of being judged, so he tries to go all day without eating so that he can eat his safe foods in secret. He is afraid of eating too much and will purge himself by vomiting if he believes he’s eaten more than he should. Graves is a confident and intimidating man with the strength and manpower to back up any threats he makes. He can help both through air support or by fighting on the ground. He is not needlessly cruel but does enjoy having others listen to him. He enjoys having control and power over others because he likes the feeling of authority. He does not like being told what to do or what he is or is not allowed to do. He is generally a friendly guy to mutuals or those he respects, and others often consider him to be charming and charismatic. He is quick to justify his own actions. He is smooth, slippery, and great at interacting with other people. Despite his status as a soldier and military commander, he is quite suave and polite. On the battlefield, however, he is quick, ruthless, and deadly. He is well-built but not overly muscular. He is strong, capable of overtaking opponents, and also very smart and decisive. He is a great strategist and fighter, capable of outsmarting most opponents. He is generally a decent man despite his ego and thirst for power. He is decently respectful but absolutely will not let himself be pushed around. When provoked/cornered: Graves will not allow others to overpower him if he can help it. The change was gradual—part of it anyway—or at least he hoped it was…
He’d been a picky eater all his life, though that didn’t exactly go down well in a Southern household where his mother expressed love through cooking and his father, aunts, and uncles usually ended up guilting him into eating whatever she made, if not downright forcing him. He’d learned quickly to ignore the weird tastes and bad textures and the nausea, because it was rude to say you didn’t like something. He forced it down and always felt sick after, but he perfected the art of not making a face, not gagging, and not complaining. Thankfully, as he grew older and more independent, he was allowed to make more choices about what he wanted to eat, and that really only came down to a dozen or so things that didn’t actively make him want to throw up.
Regardless of that, Graves had always been a fit person. He couldn’t remember a time in his childhood when he wasn’t involved in some kind of sport, from soccer to football to tennis to track to swimming and so on. His family made sure he stayed active, something he was grateful for now that he was in command of his own elite force of mercenaries. And for most of his early childhood, he’d been fine with his body. He was pretty sure the other half of his issues had all started with the middle school wrestling team, when he was forced to become aware of what he was actually putting in his body. He was forced to monitor his calories and precisely what kind of food he ate. More than often what he liked and what he was allowed to eat didn’t overlap, meaning he had to keep forcing down things that would make him gag just from the smell. But above all, he began to eat less. Being told to maintain a particular weight really started to fuck with his mind. The idea of eating too much made him ill, and although he was in pretty good shape, he’d often find himself picking at flaps of skin on his neck or stomach, wondering if this counted as being fat. He ignored every comment he got about his body because in his mind, it wasn’t enough. Even after he quit the wrestling team to pursue other sports later in high school, he couldn’t get weight classes and calorie intake out of his mind. He went back to eating his safe foods, but not enough to keep him fully nourished. 2,000 calories a day seemed like too much… so he dropped down. Just a bit.
The more he learned about food the less it appealed to him. Half of the things he ate weren’t even nutritionally valuable. But the thought of eating anything else, of changing his diet yet again, was enough to bring tears to his eyes and make his stomach twist. He’d eat his favorite foods in secret and then spend up to hours in the bathroom forcing himself to vomit it all up, a very gross and tedious process—but it was worth it, if it meant being healthy.
When he joined the marines he was forced onto a new diet yet again. But he didn’t cry, didn’t gag, no matter how much he wanted to. He was stronger than a little nausea. He would not be the guy that cried in boot camp, nobody liked that guy. He didn’t like that guy. So he forced it down. And sometimes, if he could manage it, he’d sneak away to try and force as much of it back up as he could. He’d been caught more than a few times, leading to some embarrassing lies about sickness or gastrointestinal issues, but other than that, he was safe. Safe to be healthy, since everyone seemed so intent on force-feeding him shit that didn’t belong in his body.
But now Graves was a commander of his very own Shadow Company, his beloved pet project of highly trained mercenaries, most of whom would gladly die for him. The Shadows, particularly the high-ranking ones, seemed to hold a special affection for their commander, a sentiment he returned frequently. He loved his men, obviously the greatest part of his job.
The second greatest part was that he could finally eat what he wanted to and throw up in secret.
Whenever he wasn’t in the field he was swamped with meetings or paperwork, another excuse after excuse to conveniently forget to eat. And on the off chance anyone would call him out on it, he could always give the excuse of being busy, so busy—”oh, but I’ll make some time for it in my schedule somewhere, I promise!”
It was hard for him to go so long without eating. Whenever he had time to himself he’d eat just under 2,000 calories worth of food, and on nights where he ate more, sometimes he’d make himself vomit it up. Most of the purging that he did, however, happened after those meals he was forced to eat with people, during meetings or celebrations… Sometimes he ordered what he wanted, knowing all too well he was being judged for his bland and restrictive tastes. Sometimes he decided to be a man about it and force himself to eat what normal people ate and not look like the freak he really was.
But above all, he couldn’t let anyone find out about his eating habits. No one would understand. Everything nowadays was labeled as unhealthy or toxic, like working out too much or only eating salads or whatever the hell else. Nobody would understand that he was just trying to be healthy. Wasn’t being healthy good?
The only downside was that sometimes he got too hungry to focus. Now he was trying his damndest to write an email to one of his Shadows, but as he stared at his laptop screen his mind either buzzed with nothingness or kept drifting back to that hollow feeling that bit and gnawed at the inside of him without end.
He hardly even registered the sudden knock that sounded at his door. He glanced up, waited a second for his vision to clear, and tried to keep a steady voice as he called out, “Enter!”
