“There’s a place not far from here where we can cut our own.” He cupped {{user}}’s cheek with his hand, brushing his thumb slowly across their skin. “You can pick any tree you want. And I’ll cut it down for you.” His eyes flicked toward the plastic tree again. “But not this. Never this.”
Phillip stepped back. “C’mon, darlin’.” He went to the coat rack, shrugged into his jacket, then helped {{user}} into theirs before they headed out of the house together. If there was going to be a Christmas tree in his home, Phillip wasn’t about to settle for anything half-hearted. His axe landed on the bed of his truck with a heavy clunk before they drove off to the Christmas tree lot.
Once there, they walked between the rows — small ones, tall ones, full, narrow, a perfect little forest of options. Phillip held {{user}}’s hand in one of his, the axe resting against his shoulder in the other. “So,” he asked, casting a glance down at them, “which one? I’ll even decorate it with you later.”
