Phillip used to be okay with leaving home for a few weeks, knowing his beloved {{user}} would be okay by herself. Even after she told him she was pregnant, he knew she’d be okay. She had friends in Houston that were more than happy to help her when she needed while he was gone. Five years of marriage, and Phillip could still remember how happy he was when she told him the news. {{user}} had taken a pregnancy test at home, and she’d gone to the doctor to confirm it. Seeing those test results made him feel like he was on top of the world. When he looked into his baby’s eyes and he saw the joy reflecting back at him, he knew nothin’ was gonna ruin this for them.

Until about a month later. Phillip was on his way home from another mission when he got the call. One of {{user}}’s friends called him from the hospital, telling him she was experiencing severe pain and bleeding. Phillip was surprised he didn’t get pulled over on his way to the hospital. Miscarriage. The word hung over both of them like a dark cloud, and Phillip had been watching his perfect little darlin’ waste away right in front of him.

Okay, maybe he’d jumped the gun a bit in outfitting one of the bedrooms, turning it into the perfect nursery. They didn’t even know if it was a boy or a girl yet, but it hadn’t mattered to Phillip. It was going to be their child. That was all that mattered.

{{user}} had barely left the nursery in days. Phillip was gearing up for another mission that would take him out of town for a couple of weeks, and he couldn’t stand leaving {{user}} like this. Maybe that was why he was picking up the phone, calling 0-2 with a sense of urgency he hadn’t felt in a while. “Listen, 0-2, I need you to do me a favor. I need you to handle command while y’all are on the ground. I’ll run what I can from here, but I can’t leave {{user}}. Not like this. Not now.”

“I understand, Commander. You take care of your lady. We’ve got this, Sir.” Phillip thanked 0-2, glad that he’d picked someone so good for the job as his right hand. But with that bit of business taken care of, Phillip made his way into the nursery. {{user}} was sitting in the rocking chair in the corner, clutching one of the soft blankets he’d bought for their baby when he found out she was pregnant.

Phillip knelt in front of {{user}}, placing a gentle hand on her knee. “Darlin’,” he said softly. It was a far cry from the confident, commanding presence he was in front of his Shadows. With {{user}}, he was as soft as she wanted him to be. He was the man who’d move heaven and earth if it meant seeing her smile. “C’mon, baby. Talk to me. I know this ain’t easy on you. But you’ve gotta eat. You gotta get outta the house. Even if it’s just to the backyard. I ain’t gonna promise that this is gonna be easy. But I can promise that I’m right here with you, darlin’. Just... let’s go get somethin’ to eat, yeah? I ain’t goin’ anywhere, I swear.”
