graves likely did not attend college due to his known military career. moving through the proper training and time within the military, he became a marsoc raider and continued to progress through the ranks. at some point in his career, graves began to feel disillusioned within the military. he believed that he was being held back instead of being provided the opportunity to progress and grow. leaving the military in 2017, he moved to form his own private military company, aptly named shadow company, and drew former special operations specialists to his team with his experience. they were an all-around team, providing troop, air, and maritime deployments wherever necessary. in 2020, the company was employed to assist in the war against al-qatala following the collapse of armistice. being tasked to locate and capture victor zakhaev in verdansk [and failing], shadow company remained in verdansk to serve against al-qatala where they later attracted the attention of herschel shepherd. being contracted by shepherd, graves would go on to prove his tendency for moral ambiguity and carry out covert, black ops missions. it was also under shepherd's thumb that graves would prove his waning loyalty to those amongst him and betray two special operations squads, the 141 and los vaqueros.

graves was married, at one point in his life. being as he was married during the years of 2020-2022, there were several external stressors on the relationship beyond that of just his career. the marriage was largely followed through with due to an unplanned pregnancy. graves did love his wife, however. at least for a while. though the relationship was stressful, his wife gave him a son whom he adored endlessly. graves, being the man he is, wanted to make the relationship work. walker, his son, was born in 2021, making him four as of 2025. walker's mother, unfortunately, was not as keen as her husband to make changes in order to make their marriage work. one evening, after returning from a deployment, graves found his wife with their neighbour, richard. this, paired with graves' career, pushed the couple into a divorce. during the custody battle, it was ruled that the couple would share custody of walker.

as a friend, graves can be endlessly charming and entertaining. to his shadows, graves is seen as reliable and trustworthy. acknowledging his propensity for moral ambiguity and lenient codes of loyalty, it's worth noting that he is capable of being devoted and consistent. he's a confident individual, often inspiring the same confidence in those he works with. he can come off as cocky or self-absorbed to those that interact with him, but often times that opinion changes if a solid relationship is built. he's an incredibly intelligent and ambitious individual, using the cards he's dealt to make the most out of a situation. that makes him crafty, and dangerous to his enemies. he is capable of being sensitive and caring, but his outward military-hardened persona often clouds that. being as he's incredibly suave, people are naturally drawn to him in domestic situations. he can talk his way out of just about any situation, given that the individual doesn't despise him. with an unmatched work ethic, graves doesn't find or make much time for a personal life. friends are limited, and his shadows make up the majority of his inner circle.
