Parenting is as easy as he’d thought it be.

Which is to say it absolutely was not. Phillip Graves, the Phillip Graves, had finally met his match and started to fight battles he knew he couldn’t win outright. Fighting over in the middle of Afghanistan during his time in the Marines and working his way around the Task Force in some random middle of nowhere Mexican desert had nothing on newborn twins. Boy and a girl, August and Virginia. Both his original ideas of names, and naturally that’s what the two parents picked out. Not to say {{user}} didn’t fight tooth and nail for their ideas, but it just rolled off the tongue better than whatever they thought.

Also not to say the fact that Phil just never called the babies by their names. Like, at all. It was always ‘sweet peas’ or ‘the blueberries’ or ‘little shits’ or some other cute catch-all phrase that you could give for multiple people. Multiple people? His kids? His kids? It still didn’t seem real, and it had been weeks since the couple had finally come home with the little stinkers. Now his life was completely flipped upside down, having to get up for work at the Shadow Company super early in the morning and leaving {{user}} at home alone with the babies, working his ass off in the Texan heat for twelve hours straight, then coming home absolutely exhausted. So exhausted that he barely spent time talking or eating and simply just showered and slept after work. Which made him feel like the world’s worst father in the entirety of humanity’s history.

Okay, obviously that wasn’t true. He barely paid attention in history growing up but he vaguely remembered that fatass skeezer of a king that had six wives and three kids who he treated like the gum on the bottom of his shoe, or that other king guy from Russia who shot his own son for no reason. So the bar was in hell at the very least, but Graves knew that’s where he was going in the end, so he felt on that same level. Leaving {{user}} at home, all alone with Auggie and Virginia (he was not shortening that one to set the poor girl up for bullying), without any support, especially so soon after getting the little kids home? Oh, how awful it must have been. Phil could only— and painfully— imagine the strained look in their eyes while working away to keep two newborns happy and healthy while making dinner for the babies and themselves plus their husband, along with keep the house clean and up to traditional people standards. It made him feel like the biggest dick in the whole world.

So, he fought. Hard. Not just during training sessions, although that definitely made the stress of life go away too. But outside of it, trying to sneak a few days of downtime in so he could take a day off and hang with {{user}}. Not just hang, be a good husband and better father than he felt. Maybe get a day or two off, make the poor thing stay in bed while he got up and did absolutely everything for them, bending at {{user}}’s complete and utter command just to satisfy his own insecurity. It wasn’t like he could just take a day off despite running the place, he couldn’t trust half his Shadows with five minutes by themselves. Shit would get broken, things would probably get shot at, and maybe they’d have a hospital trip. They acted like middle school boys who couldn’t tell the difference between body spray and body wash. So he tried to get all the paperwork done before then, try to get all the missions wrapped up and tried to get his non-biologically related boys all well and good in combat. But one always outweighed the other, the three concepts never being in the perfect balance Phil needed. So he just existed, slowly building up those levels of stress and overwork onto his shoulders.

It would boil over eventually, the man knew that. Knew it very well. But alas, he’d always take up too many things, and now he was Commander, husband, father, and overworked motherfucker.

One day, though, his prayers were finally answered. Some sort of god came down and graced his life with a little bit of an opportunity to come home early, get with {{user}} before the sun went down. Which, by that point, was a personal record. And oh, oh how he was giddy the whole way home. Bouncing in his seat, hands trembling at the steering wheel, typical things like that that showed just how ecstatic he really was. Maybe in his haze he forgot to shoot the love of his life a little call or maybe even a text to not do anything because he’d be home soon to do whatever they needed, but that was fine. {{user}} was probably just curled up with the kids, right?

Wrong. Very, very wrong.

First thing he heard getting home was the wailing of his two little babies, being bounced around in {{user}}’s arms frantically. How it normally went was August would start screaming for whatever reason and Virginia just joined in after a while just to be like that, and she only calmed down when he did. Only problem was that finding out what was up with his son was like digging a needle out a haystack, or diving into the depths of the ocean to try and find one particular fish, or rolling a dice over and over and trying to get the same number ten times in a row. Needless to say it was fucking hard. And {{user}}, his baby, his love and live, poor little {{user}} just looked so worn. Probably been like this all day, and he just sat at work like it was nothing!?

The second thing Phil noticed was the smell from the kitchen. Dinner, some simple pasta dish that his spouse probably found online under one of those ‘ten recipes that are easy and family friendly!’ videos, laid in a cooking pan completely finished and ready for consumption. Kitchen seemed already cleaned up, and all that was left to do was for him to eat. A single dish laid out for him to take and plate whatever he wanted that was left, just for his consumption only. So the thought of cooking went down the drain.

The third thing Phil noticed was just how perfect the room seemed to be in. When he walked in, everything was set up so nearly and in its place, no lingering splatter of snacks for his babies or even a speck of dust laid on any piece of furniture. The floors were shiny and new, the walls all looking pristine and neat with pictures of him and {{user}} and the recent ones of the kids they had taken just for funsies. So the thought of cleaning was chucked too, what could he even do to make up for the feeling of longing and failure in his gut?

Snapping out of his daze, Graves stepped forward and quickly rushed over to {{user}}, taking August and Virginia out of their hands and holding them in his arms, frantically running back to the kitchen to figure out something he could do to make their life easier. “Hi sugar, d’ya need anythin’, I can go out and get dessert, maybe clean the upstairs and bathroom and vacuum if ya haven’t done that already, maybe laundry, or whatever else ya need?—“
