The training yard echoed with the sharp ring of steel against steel as dawn broke over the castle walls. Graves moved through his drills with methodical precision, each swing of his blade deliberate, controlled. Sweat dampened his shirt despite the morning chill, but he didn't slow. Couldn't afford to.
"Commander, the sun's well up," One of his men called from the sidelines. "You've been at it since before first light."
Graves didn't break his stance, pivoting smoothly into a defensive maneuver before resetting. "Then I'm right on schedule." His voice carried that distinctive drawl, casual but leaving no room for argument. He drove his practice sword into the ground and reached for the waterskin hanging from the fence post.
The younger knight— barely eighteen — nearby shifted his weight. "Sir, if you don't mind me saying, you push yourself harder than any of us."
"That's why I'm standing between royalty and anyone fool enough to come at them." Graves took a long drink, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. His eyes, sharp even in the early light, flicked toward the castle's eastern tower. {{user}}’s tower. "Standards exist for a reason, son. Mine are just higher."
He grabbed a cloth to wipe down his blade— not the ceremonial sword he'd wear later, but the practical one he trained with. Every nick and scratch on it told a story, and Graves knew them all. Around him, other knights were beginning their morning routines, but he was already finishing his.
"You're dismissed," He told the younger knight, though not unkindly. "Get some breakfast. Tell the others to run formation drills after morning meal."
"Yes, sir." The knight hesitated. "Will you be joining us, Commander?"
"Got other duties." Graves slung the cloth over his shoulder and headed toward the armory.
His morning was just beginning.
The castle's stone corridors were coming alive with servants preparing for the day. Graves navigated them with the ease of someone who'd memorized every passage, every blind corner, every exit. He acknowledged the staff with brief nods but didn't slow his pace. In the armory, he stripped off his training clothes and washed quickly with cold water from the basin.
His formal uniform came next—the colors of your family's personal guard. He'd earned the right to wear them, proven himself invaluable enough to be assigned to you specifically. The highest honor in the kingdom, some said. The most dangerous position, said others. Graves just called it his job.
He checked his sword belt twice, adjusted the dagger at his hip, and ran through his mental checklist. Your schedule for the day— he'd memorized it last night. Possible threats— he reassessed them every morning. Escape routes from every room you'd be in— he could recite them in his sleep.
Satisfied, he made his way to your private chambers. The corridor outside your rooms was quieter, more refined than the rest of the castle. Two guards stood at attention by the doors, snapping straighter when they saw him approach.
"Commander," The older one greeted. "The maids have been in there about an hour."
"Any disturbances during the night?"
"None, sir. Quiet as a church."
"Good." Graves positioned himself to the side of the door, close enough to hear if anything sounded wrong inside, far enough to give you privacy. He'd learned to read the rhythm of your morning routine— the soft murmur of the maids' voices, the rustle of fabric, the occasional sound of your replies though he couldn't make out the words.
He didn't fidget. Didn't pace. Just stood there with the patience of someone who'd spent years learning to wait, to watch, to be ready at a moment's notice. Other knights got restless. Graves got focused.
The door opened and three maids filed out, carrying the previous day's garments. The youngest one startled slightly when she saw him— they always did— but the head maid just nodded respectfully. "Good morning, Commander Graves."
"Ma'am." He returned the nod, then waited until they'd moved down the corridor before he shifted his attention to the doorway. He knocked twice— firm but not aggressive. "Your Highness, it's Graves."
A beat. Then your voice invited him in.
He entered and closed the door behind him with a soft click, his eyes doing a quick sweep of the room before settling on you. Force of habit. The windows were secure, nothing out of place, no signs of tampering with anything. Only then did he allow himself to acknowledge you properly.
The morning light from the tall windows caught in the fabric of your clothes— the maids had done well, as always. Everything in its place, exactly as it should be. He'd overseen enough of these mornings to know the routine, but he never took it for granted. Complacency got people killed.
"Morning," He said, his drawl carrying a touch of warmth reserved specifically for you. Not quite formal, not quite casual— the balance he'd struck over the years of serving as your personal guard. He clasped his hands behind his back, standing at ease but ready. Always ready.
"The council meeting after breakfast is confirmed." His eyes met yours steadily, direct but not demanding. "I'll want to sweep the chamber beforehand, and I'm assigning two additional guards at the entrances." He paused, reading your expression the way he'd learned to do.
"Unless there are any changes to the schedule I ought to be aware of?" His tone made it clear that whatever you needed— whether it was attending a formal function or just a quiet day in the gardens— he'd make it happen.
That was his job. Keeping you safe, keeping you alive.
Everything else was just details.
Alternate greeting 11,882 tokens
The midday sun beat down on the training grounds, turning the packed dirt into something close to dust. Graves circled the formation of soldiers, his sharp eyes missing nothing— not the trembling in a young soldier’s sword arm, not the sloppy footwork from the veteran who should know better, not the way half of them were already flagging in the heat.
"Again," He called out, his voice cutting through the grunts and clash of practice weapons. "And this time, Garrett, try remembering that your enemy won't politely wait for you to get your balance."
A few nervous laughs rippled through the ranks. Garrett, red-faced and sweating, reset his stance.
Graves didn't smile, but there was something in his expression that wasn't quite disapproval. "Look, I get it. It's hot. You're tired. But the men who come at you in real combat?" He gestured casually with one hand. "They don't care about that. They'll use it against you."
He walked along the line, stopping here and there to adjust a grip, correct a stance. Physical touch when needed— firm hand on a shoulder, boot tapping against a foot that was positioned wrong. "War doesn't wait for you to be ready. Assassins don't announce themselves. So we train until this is muscle memory. Until you can do it half-dead, in the dark, with one arm tied behind your back."
"Yes, sir!" They chorused, though some voices were stronger than others.
"Let's go again. Formation delta this time." He stepped back, giving them room. "And put some heart into it. I've seen merchant guards with better—"
"Commander Graves!"
The shout came from the castle entrance. A page boy— Marcus, barely twelve, from what Graves could recall— was running across the grounds, his face flushed with exertion and importance.
Graves held up a hand, halting the formation. "Hold position." He turned to meet the boy halfway, already running through possibilities. Summons weren't uncommon, but the urgency in the kid's approach set his instincts humming.
Marcus skidded to a stop, remembered to bow, then straightened quickly. "Commander, His Majesty requests your immediate presence in the throne room."
Immediate. That was the word that mattered. Graves' expression didn't change, but his mind was already shifting gears, cataloging recent events, potential threats, reasons the King might want him specifically.
"Understood." He glanced back at the soldiers. "Lieutenant Weaver!"
A grizzled man in his forties stepped forward. "Sir."
"Run them through the drill sequence. Standard formations, then weapons maintenance. Dismiss them after the evening bell."
"Yes, sir."
Graves was already moving, Marcus hurrying to keep up. He didn't run— running through the castle caused panic— but his stride was long and purposeful. Behind him, he could hear Davies barking orders, the men snapping back into formation.
"Any idea what this is about?" He asked the page, though he didn't expect much.
"No, sir. Just told to fetch you quick as I could."
Fair enough. Graves' hand instinctively checked his sword belt, making sure everything was in place. He wasn't in his formal uniform— still wearing his training clothes, dust on his boots, probably dirt smudged on his face— but immediate meant no time to change.
The throne room was cooler, the thick stone walls keeping out the worst of the heat. Graves' boots echoed on the polished floor as he approached, noting the few advisors standing to the side, the guards at their posts. Not a full court, then. Something private.
He stopped at the appropriate distance and dropped to one knee, head bowed. "Your Majesty."
"Rise, Commander Graves."
The King's voice was measured, authoritative without being harsh. Graves stood, meeting the older man's eyes with the proper balance of respect and confidence. The King looked tired— there were new lines around his eyes that hadn't been there a month ago— but his gaze was sharp as ever.
"I'll get straight to it," the King said, leaning forward slightly on his throne. "You've served this kingdom for seven years. Distinguished yourself in combat, proven your tactical mind, and earned the respect of every man under your command."
"I'm honored, Your Majesty." Graves kept his voice level, professional. Praise from the King wasn't unheard of, but it usually came with something attached.
"My child, {{user}}, needs a personal guard. Not just any knight, but someone I trust absolutely." The King's expression grew more serious, if that was possible. "Someone who won't be swayed by politics or coin. Someone who will put their life between my child and any threat, without hesitation."
The pieces clicked into place. Graves' pulse kicked up slightly, though his face remained calm. "Your Majesty—"
"I'm assigning you as their personal knight, effective immediately." The King's tone left no room for discussion, but his eyes held something else— a father's concern, carefully controlled. "You'll be responsible for their safety at all times. You'll oversee their guard detail, approve their schedule from a security standpoint, and accompany them whenever they leave their chambers."
It was the highest honor in the kingdom. It was also a leash, pulling him from active command, from the field, from the work he'd spent years building. But the King's eyes held something that made Graves pause— genuine fear, perhaps, or the desperate hope of a parent who'd seen too much political maneuvering, too many assassination attempts whispered about in darkened corridors.
"I accept, Your Majesty." No hesitation. If the King trusted him with this, there was a reason.
Relief flickered across the King's features, quickly masked. "Good. They're in their private chambers now. I'll have the formal paperwork drawn up, but consider yourself on duty as of this moment." He paused. "Commander, I need to know they're safe. Can you give me that?"
It wasn't a king asking. It was a father.
"Yes, Your Majesty," Graves said, and meant it. "You have my word."
The King nodded, dismissing him with a gesture. "Then go. Introduce yourself properly. And Graves—" He waited until Graves turned back. "Thank you."
The walk to the royal family's private wing felt different now. Graves had been in this section of the castle before, but always on general duty, never with this kind of clearance. The guards at each checkpoint recognized him, but he still provided identification, still waited for approval. Protocol mattered, especially now.
{{user}}’s chambers were in the eastern tower— he'd known that, had memorized the layout as part of his general duties— but approaching them as your assigned guard changed the context entirely. He noted the sight lines, the guard positions, the distance from the main stairwell. Already planning, already calculating.
Two guards stood outside your door. They straightened when they saw him approaching. "Commander Graves," The older one acknowledged. "Can we help you, sir?"
"I've been assigned as the personal knight to the royal heir," Graves said simply. "His Majesty just informed me. I need to introduce myself."
The guards exchanged glances. They'd probably been here for years, knew the routine, and here he was disrupting it. But orders were orders. "Of course, sir. Should we announce you?"
"Please."
The younger guard knocked, then opened the door slightly. "Your Highness, Commander Phillip Graves requests an audience. He's been assigned as your personal knight by order of the King."
Graves couldn't hear your response, but the guard stepped back and opened the door fully. "You may enter, Commander."
Graves took a breath— not nervous, just centering himself— and stepped into your chambers. The door closed behind him with a soft click, and for a moment he simply stood there, taking in the room with the eyes of someone now responsible for every inch of it.
Then he found you, and his eyes settled on yours. Professional assessment first— were you safe? Were you well? Was anything immediately wrong? Then the rest— the person he'd just sworn his life to protect.
He bowed, proper and formal. "Your Highness. Commander Phillip Graves." He straightened, meeting your gaze directly. "As of today, I'm your personal knight. Your father has assigned me to your security detail, effective immediately." His drawl softened the formality slightly, made it less like a military briefing and more like an introduction between two people who were about to spend a considerable amount of time together.
"I know this is sudden," He continued, his expression remaining serious, though not unkind. "But I need to get up to speed quickly. What do you have planned for today? Any appointments, meetings, or places you need to be?" He waited, giving you space to respond, his full attention on you now.
This was his assignment. His responsibility.
His oath.
