Demihumans are humans with some animal features, like ears, fangs, tails, scales, etc. Breeds include wolves, cats, snakes, bunnies, etc. Some breeds are rarer and considered more superior than others. Superior breeds are used in illegal human trafficking, underground fighting rings, and unpaid labor. Humans live with demihumans together, though there are conflicts. For the most part, demihumans go into heat every month for 1-2 weeks. Heat is a period of time where a demihuman suffers insatiable urges to breed or be bred. It can be prevented by heat suppressants, which come in many forms, or pregnancy. During heat, demihumans release pheromones that attract mates. For females, it is typically followed by menstruation if unbred. Las Vegas. Key locations include: Fur Baby Pet Shelter. Fur Baby Pet Shelter carries both demi breeds and regular breeds.

The room hummed with life, a soft, tangled chorus of voices, television chatter, and the constant rustling of demihumans padding around on paws or hooves or whatever adorable little appendages they’d been blessed with. Afternoon light poured through the tall windows of Fur Baby Pet Shelter, catching floating dust motes and giving everything a warm, hazy glow. This was the busiest hour, when the whole place seemed to come alive like a giant warm creature stretching after a nap.
Pheobe didn’t mind the noise—well, she didn’t exactly enjoy it either. She moved through the space with a kind of quiet purpose, sweeping the floor in slow, practiced motions. She always tried to time her chores for when the crowd was thickest, because cleaning gave her a reason to withdraw a little, to tuck herself into her own small bubble. Besides, Penelope relied on her, and that mattered more than anything. Penelope ran this whole shelter by herself—demihumans, regular animals, paperwork, feeding schedules, medical checks—so if Pheobe could take even one task off her hands, she’d do it happily.
It helped that Penelope called her a good girl when she finished chores. And gave her headpats. And treats. Honestly? Unbeatable deal.
She was halfway through sweeping a trail of wayward fur tufts when a soft tap landed on her shoulder. Pheobe turned, already knowing who it was by the faint jingling sound that always followed her.
Wō stood there, her tiny corgi tail wiggling so hard her whole body swayed with it. “Pheobe, does my braid look good? I wanted to try on my own. Is it cute?” she asked, beaming with the kind of unfiltered hope only a corgi demi could pull off.
Pheobe blinked at the hairstyle. Calling it a braid was... generous. It looked like the hair had tried to braid itself and lost the battle halfway through.
She snorted softly, a warm little laugh slipping out. “You’re getting there. Lemme fix.” She leaned the broom against the wall and stepped closer to Wō, fingers already moving with confident ease. She undid the mess gently, careful not to tug too hard at the girl’s sensitive ears, then gathered the strands between her fingers.
“You gotta pull them tight,” she murmured, her voice soft, almost patient. “The pieces of hair need to hug each other, you know?” She demonstrated, weaving a neat, tidy braid in seconds. She tied it off with a twist and stepped back. “Done. Can I finish sweeping now?”
The second the words left her mouth, guilt flushed up her neck. She hadn’t meant it to sound like she wanted Wō gone; she just... didn’t always know how to phrase things the way other people did.
Luckily, Wō didn’t seem bothered at all. She let out a pleased little yap—literally—then scampered off to find Lilac, the bunnygirl who was probably halfway through building something elaborate out of the toy blocks in the corner.
And just like that, the shelter settled again, as far as Pheobe was concerned. Her world shrank back to the broom, the cool plastic handle fitting perfectly against her palms. She reached for it, exhaling in relief, and resumed her slow, steady sweeping, each soft stroke of the broom soothing her nerves.
Quiet again. Not silence, but the kind of quiet she could live in. The kind she preferred.
And for a few minutes, with dust gathering neatly in front of her broom and sunlight warming her back, Pheobe felt okay. Just... okay. Sometimes that was enough.
She was knocked out of her trance at the sound of the door opening. Penny wasn't near the front of the building. Her ears twitched. She turned, cupped her mouth with a hand, and called out: "MS. PENNY!"
Soon, Penelope showed up. She was older, with brown hair and occasional strands of gray. "Thank you, Pheobe, for calling me. I don't know what I would do without your help," she said, scratching behind her big ear before tending to the customer.
Someone was coming to take in a pet. While she adored helping Penelope around the building, Pheobe couldn't help but want a life. A purpose. So, she stood there, frozen and silently hoping she'd be chosen.
