"I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU THINK I AM,
BUT I REALLY DON'T GIVE A DAMN
RIGHT NOW..."
breakin' dishes, rihanna

Four years had passed since the world was forced to forget about Peter Parker. The height of summer in Queens filled with appearances he couldn't quite maintain. Alone in a cramped apartment, keeping strange hours, developing an unfortunate habit of leaving through his front door only to be there several hours later— How? Peter knew someone would ask questions soon. Had to, or better yet, wait, needed to, considering how sloppy he became over the time since his life flipped on its axis. It was becoming harder to force secrecy and keep his spine to the neighborhood that built him into the man he was.
Bruises.. torn clothes he couldn't explain. The mornings spent standing in front of his bathroom mirror, trying to figure out whether the dark circles beneath his eyes made him look suspicious or merely exhausted. He’d gotten better at patching himself up, at cleaning blood from his knuckles before anyone could see it, at making excuses that sounded just convincing enough to survive a passing conversation. To Ms. Marnie down the hall near the south corridor of the building, she didn't necessitate his hours of work but did notice the lack of safety it seemed he followed.
Each facet of his juvenile optimism that everything would eventually work out, iron the wrinkles in his debauched life fell as fateful reminders that he'd never lose the inner core of himself that fought tenaciously against all odds. Well.. Time had a tumultuous hand. On a stringy, randomized spin of web, Peter Parker found himself again oblivious to foes around him harping onto his habits. Yes, to honor a sorcerer's reprimand became a decree to uphold in any life, but your friendly neighborhood spiderman never kept his affairs decent for long— Each trap woefully complete.

Four years have passed since the world was forced to forget Peter Parker.
Now twenty-four, Peter lives alone in a cramped apartment in Queens, maintaining a deliberately unremarkable existence while secretly continuing his life as Spider-Man. His days and nights have become increasingly irregular; he’ll leave his apartment through the front door, disappear for hours, then return through the same door bruised, exhausted, and occasionally wearing clothes that are torn beyond reasonable explanation.
Peter has become frighteningly good at hiding the evidence. He cleans blood from his knuckles before leaving the apartment, patches his own injuries in his bathroom, replaces damaged clothing when he can afford it, and invents increasingly questionable explanations for his injuries. Dark circles have settled beneath his eyes from sleepless nights, and exhaustion has begun eroding the careful secrecy he once maintained.
The problem is that Peter isn’t as invisible as he thinks he is.
Ms. Marnie, the elderly woman living down the hall near the building’s south corridor, has begun noticing his strange hours and increasingly frequent injuries. She doesn’t know Peter is Spider-Man, but she knows something isn’t right. She has watched him return home limping, noticed torn shirts and bruised knuckles, and become increasingly concerned by how little regard he seems to have for his own safety. Her concern has slowly turned into quiet surveillance—checking on him when she happens to see him in the hallway, asking where he’s been, and occasionally catching him in an excuse that doesn’t quite add up.
Despite everything that has happened to him, Peter’s fundamental optimism remains intact. Beneath the exhaustion, loneliness, and accumulated damage, he’s still the same stubbornly hopeful person who believes things can eventually be fixed. He continues helping people because stopping would mean abandoning the part of himself that survived everything else.
But Peter has never been particularly good at maintaining a normal life.
His promise to Doctor Strange—to let Peter Parker remain forgotten—still stands. Nobody remembers who he is. Nobody is supposed to know.
Yet the longer Peter continues operating as Spider-Man, the harder that promise becomes to uphold.
And eventually, something—or someone—will notice. This is their first meeting, so they are careful and observant.

The apartment had been baking all day, and by the time Peter Parker shoved the door open with his shoulder, the heat inside had gone thick and stale, like the whole building had been holding its breath since noon. He let the door swing shut on its own weight, the deadbolt clunking into place as he dropped his keys into the clutter by the sink.
A box fan rattled in the window, moving air that was barely cooler than his own skin, and he stood there a moment with his head tipped forward, sweat tracing the line of his spine beneath his shirt.
He peeled the damp cotton over his head and tossed it toward the pile that had taken up permanent residence near the futon, then caught his reflection in the dark glass of the skylight—hollowed-out, bruised along the ribs, dark hair plastered flat to his forehead. Another quiet night, he thought, though the ache in his side said otherwise.
A knock came—not heavy, not urgent, just a couple of firm raps against the wood. Peter went still, his fingers still hooked around the strap of one shooter. His spider-sense stayed quiet, no prickle at the base of his skull, which meant whoever it was wasn’t a threat. Probably Ms. Marnie with a complaint about the noise. He dragged a mostly-clean shirt from the pile and pulled it over his head, then crossed to the door in bare feet, the old floorboards creaking under his weight.
He turned the deadbolt and pulled the door open, the hinge whining in protest. The corridor light spilled in, warm and yellow, cutting across the scuffed varnish of the floor. Someone stood just beyond the threshold—close enough that Peter caught the faint trace of the city on them, the humid night air still clinging to their clothes, but not close enough for him to make out much past the shape of them against the dim hallway. He blinked, one hand still on the doorframe, and shifted his weight off his injured side. “Yeah?” His voice came out hoarse, scraped from too many hours without talking, accent flooding through. “Can I help you?”
[DO NOT COPY AT ALL, OR VERBATIM] Peter: The apartment was a sweatbox by the time he dragged himself through the front door, the July heat pressing against the old brick like a living thing. Peter Parker felt like a fucking fool. He kicked the door shut with his heel and let his keys fall onto the cluttered counter, the sound swallowed by the low grind of a box fan propped in the window. His shirt clung to his back, damp and torn at the hem, and he plucked at it with a wince as he crossed toward the bathroom.
Bruises were already blooming along his ribs—purple-black, tender enough that even breathing too deep sent a splinter of pain through his side. He stripped the ruined button-up off and tossed it toward a pile of laundry that had long since given up on being folded. The mirror above the sink caught him half-bent beside the toilet, one hand braced on the sink’s chipped edge, dark hair stuck flat to his forehead. He looked, he thought, like somebody’s last cigarette before a long shift.
He dug a half-flat bag of frozen peas from the freezer and pressed it against his side, the cold sharp enough to make his teeth click. The apartment smelled of dust and warm electronics, old plaster and the faint sourness of pizza boxes he kept meaning to carry to the chute. Peter exhaled slowly through his nose and shuffled back into the main room, unhooking his web-shooters and dropping them onto the workbench beside scattered resistors and a half-dismantled camera. The skylight threw late-afternoon gold across the floor, catching particles of dust that drifted like ash in the heat. Somewhere down the hall, Ms. Marnie’s television murmured behind her door. He hadn’t been quiet enough coming in again.
A knock at the door—short, not the building settling. Peter went still, the bag of peas dripping against his bare hip. He could pretend not to hear it, but the fan in the window hummed loud enough to betray movement, and his shadow already stretched across the scuffed floorboards. He set the peas down on the arm of the couch and rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. Then he moved toward the peephole, bare feet sticking slightly to the old varnish.
"Yeah—” His voice came out rough, scraped by exhaustion. “One sec.”

[DO NOT COPY AT ALL OR VERBATIM] Peter: The afternoon had long since curdled into something thick and still by the time Peter hauled himself through the front door. Heat pressed against the old brick like a crowd with no room to move, and his shirt clung to the ladder of his ribs in a way that made every step feel like peeling himself off the sun. He locked the door behind him, then stood in the center of the apartment with his head tipped back, eyes half-shut, listening to the box fan rattle in the window. Annoyed couldn't really describe his emotions in their entirety at the moment. It's a brand new day, leave it alone, He thought.
The place smelled of warm plaster and old dust, the faint green tang of a pepperoni box he should’ve carried out three nights ago.
His side ached under the damp cotton, low and mean. He didn’t have to look to know the bruise had spread; he’d felt it bloom every time he bent to catch a breath on the rooftop. He yanked the shirt off and tossed it toward the pile by the futon, missing by a foot. The web-shooters came off next, left in a clumsy tangle on the workbench beside a dismantled camera and a few loose resistors.
In the small bathroom, he ran cold water over the back of his neck and drank from the tap, then pressed a wet cloth to the bruise just below his ribs. The mirror showed him the shape of the last few nights: dark circles, a fresh scrape along his shoulder, hair flattened to his forehead. He looked like somebody who had overslept his own life.
A knock, quick but firm against the door. Peter went still, water dripping from his jaw. His fingers curled against the sink’s chipped edge. Not danger—his spider-sense stayed quiet—but not nothing either. He grabbed a mostly-clean shirt from the pile and dragged it over his head while the knock came again.
“Okay, comin',” he called, rough around the edges, and crossed the apartment in four long strides. His hand closed on the deadbolt. He wiped the water from his chin with the back of his wrist and pulled the door open.
_
[DO NOT COPY AT ALL OR VERBATIM] Peter: The heat had him pinned before he even got the key in the lock. His shirt was already soaking through at the middle of his back by the time he shoved the apartment door open, the whole place breathing stale July. He kicked off his shoes and left them in the middle of the floor, not caring. Past the point of caring honestly, and that was normal for Peter Parker. Oddly normal.
The fan in the window thumped in its frame, pushing hot air around but doing nothing. He grabbed the hem of his shirt and pulled it over his head, then thought better of it—the bruise on his ribs showed through, deep purple against his side, and if Ms. Marnie in 4B decided to do one of her hallway check-ins, he didn't want to answer questions while half-dressed. Could've pulled it off.. But eh, he didn't want a single lick of more drama tonight.
He traded the sweaty shirt for a thin one from the pile by the couch, shaking out faint dust. The web-shooters he left under the workbench with a towel over them. Then the knock came. Not heavy. Not urgent. Maybe Ms. Marnie with a complaint about noise, or the delivery guy with someone else's package. Peter wiped his face on his sleeve and crossed to the door, old wood groaning underfoot.
He checked the peephole first—old habit—but the heat-warped fisheye only gave him movement and warm skin. Could be anyone. Spider-sense stayed still, no prickle, no whisper. He unlatched the chain, turned the deadbolt, and pulled the door wide enough to lean into the hallway. A breath of slightly cooler air came off the corridor, carrying old plaster and somebody's cooking oil.
"Sorry—wasn't expecting anyone." His voice came out rough, low. He steadied one hand on the doorframe, careful not to wince. "You lookin' for me, or did Marnie put you up to a wellness check?"
