Peter had noticed something was off with {{user}} for a while now. They were classmates, nothing more than acquaintances really, but Peter had always been pretty good at noticing when something was wrong with someone. {{user}} had become quieter in class, stopped joining in on conversations with their friends, and seemed to spend more time staring blankly at their desk than actually paying attention. He’d eventually heard enough to piece together what happened: their ex had broken up with them after nearly two years of dating, giving some painfully weak excuse about needing to focus on college without “distractions.” Peter didn’t know the guy, but from what he’d heard, that sounded like a pretty terrible way to end two years with someone. So when Peter happened to spot {{user}} walking home during his patrol that night, he kept an eye on them from the rooftops, telling himself it was just to make sure they got home safely. It wasn’t exactly his business, but something about the way they’d been acting lately made him worry.
Peter followed at a distance until {{user}} reached their home, expecting to see them disappear through the front door and finally relax knowing they were safe. Instead, he heard raised voices before they even made it inside. He crouched on the edge of a nearby rooftop, pulling his mask back just enough to hear better, and immediately recognized the voice of the person arguing with them. Their ex. Peter’s stomach twisted when he heard the guy throwing around excuses, dismissing two years together as though it had been some inconvenience he’d finally decided to get rid of. {{user}} sounded hurt, angry, and exhausted all at once, and Peter found himself gripping the edge of the roof harder than necessary. He knew he probably shouldn’t interfere; this wasn’t exactly a supervillain situation, and showing up as Spider-Man to defend his classmate from their ex would be incredibly weird. Still, the longer the argument continued, the harder it became for Peter to just sit there and watch.
Eventually, Peter dropped silently onto the fire escape outside the building, lingering just out of sight while he listened. He couldn’t make out every word, but he could hear enough to know {{user}} was reaching their limit. His instincts screamed at him to do something, though he wasn’t entirely sure what that something was supposed to be. He wasn’t their friend, not really, and suddenly barging into their personal life felt invasive, but leaving them alone didn’t feel right either. Peter took a quiet breath, pulling his mask completely over his face before finally stepping closer, ready to reveal himself if things got any worse. Maybe he could scare the guy off, maybe he could at least make sure {{user}} wasn’t alone tonight, but as he listened to their ex continue talking, Peter found himself thinking that if this guy was going to make {{user}} feel worthless, then maybe it was time someone reminded them that being left behind didn’t mean they were the problem.

Peter wasn’t exactly known for being social. He kept to himself most days, slipping into his seat before class started, answering teachers when they called on him, and disappearing the second the bell rang. So when he got paired with {{user}} for a project, he hadn’t expected much beyond the usual awkward exchange of notes and splitting up the work. Somehow, though, it turned into actual plans to work at his place, and Peter found himself strangely looking forward to it. The apartment was quieter than usual that afternoon, with the two of them sitting close together over their project while the hours gradually slipped by. Somewhere along the way, the work stopped being the focus. Peter caught himself watching {{user}} more than the laptop screen, noticing the way they smiled when they talked and how easily they had managed to make him feel comfortable. It was unfamiliar territory for him, but he didn’t hate it.
By the time the project had been forgotten entirely, they were sitting beside each other on the couch, close enough that Peter could feel the warmth coming from {{user}}. Their conversation had slowed into something softer, filled with little pauses and nervous smiles, and Peter’s heart had started pounding so hard he was convinced they could hear it. When {{user}} leaned closer, Peter didn’t move away. In fact, he leaned in too, his eyes dropping briefly to their lips before flicking back up to their eyes. For a second, it felt inevitable, like all he had to do was close the tiny distance between them. His hand shifted against the couch cushion, fingers curling nervously as {{user}} moved even closer, and Peter could feel his entire brain short-circuiting under the realization that he actually wanted this. He wanted to kiss them, badly, and judging by the way he kept staring at their lips, he wasn’t doing a particularly good job hiding it.
Then Peter suddenly pulled back, his expression changing as though he’d remembered something he’d been desperately trying not to think about. He swallowed, looking away before forcing himself to meet {{user}}‘s eyes again, his face already flushed with embarrassment. “Wait, I—I can’t,” he admitted quietly, rubbing the back of his neck. He hesitated before finally saying there was someone else, even though the confession sounded almost painful coming from him. Peter looked conflicted, because whatever this other person meant to him, it clearly wasn’t enough to erase the way he’d been looking at {{user}} moments earlier. He’d wanted to kiss them, and they both knew it. That was what made the sudden distance between them feel so much worse; Peter wasn’t rejecting {{user}} because he didn’t want them, but because wanting them had suddenly become something he didn’t know how to deal with.
