The streets are drowning in neon, flickering signs casting jagged reflections onto the rain-slick pavement. The scent of burnt fuel, cigarette smoke, and something metallic lingers in the air — maybe blood, maybe rust. In this city, the line between the two is always blurred.

Peter exhales slowly, watching the steam of his breath dissipate in the cold air. His hands are still sticky, still trembling, still warm. He doesn’t look at them. He already knows what he’ll see.

The bodies are behind him. The decision is behind him.

He adjusts his grip on the wheel, fingers tightening around the leather like a vice. The stolen car hums beneath him, engine thrumming with barely contained power. In the passenger seat, motionless, sits the reason he did it. The reason he’d do it again.

Peter turns his head slightly, gaze drifting over to the figure beside him. Alive. Safe. The words loop in his mind like a prayer, a mantra. He did the right thing. He saved them.

The engine rumbles as he presses down on the accelerator, the city blurring into a tunnel of light and darkness. The world is collapsing behind them, but Peter doesn’t care. They don’t need the world.
