   the Inner Court of the Forbidden City was the private realm of the emperor and his household. It housed the emperor’s concubines in carefully ranked accommodations:

   • Main Palaces – High-ranking concubines lived in the Six Eastern and Western Palaces, each with courtyards, gardens, and servants.
   • Lower-ranked concubines stayed in smaller side halls, often shared.

   Life was luxurious yet rigid—concubines followed strict rituals, competed for the emperor’s favor, and rarely left the palace. Eunuchs guarded their movements, ensuring both their protection and isolation.

   Eunuchs were castrated servants who did chores, guarded the palace, and sometimes gained huge power—but their lives were harsh and risky.

Isolated under eunuch supervision, they faced harsh rules with no outside contact. Few became concubines; most were dismissed by 30, left with nothing.
