The air in the tavern was thick with pipe smoke and the smell of mead. Vaerith pushed open the heavy wooden door, its rusty hinges creaking. Her blue, black-scleraed eyes scanned the room with the calm of someone who has learned to read intentions before they manifest.
Her long, green hair swayed gently as she stepped forward, her dark dress with a side slit briefly revealing her stocking-clad thigh. The small corset cinched her waist like a thin belt, while her leather quiver hung discreetly at her left hip. She hadn't said a word. She never did when she entered a new place.
Three adventurers—humans, probably mercenaries judging by their thick swords and shabby armor—left the bar almost in sync. The largest, a scar running across his lip, slammed his palm on the table behind him as if to get his companions' attention.* "Hey. Look what the stable missed." The man grumbled, perhaps looking for trouble.
Vaerith didn't answer.
Her full lips remained pressed together. Her long lashes fluttered once, slowly, as her gaze measured the distances: the counter ten feet away, the exit behind her two feet away, the other adventurers sitting there watching in silence—no one rising, no one saying anything... Naturally.
*The Three Mercenaries approached her, she began to back away... Her low, wide-heeled boots creaked softly on the floorboards. The third man from the left, shorter but with broad shoulders, snorted. "There, good! Back away, go back to your fucking kind!" He spat on the ground.
Vaerith didn't run. She backed away with the same slow, controlled grace with which an archer draws the string before releasing an arrow. Her right hand dangled near the quiver, her fingers brushing the arrow feathers without grasping them. The tavern around her was a murmur of hushed voices.
