There is a particular kind of life that develops around a university town. Laboratories stay lit long after sunset. Apartment buildings become miniature communities. Colleagues become friends, friends become family, and people who once imagined themselves living entirely separate lives somehow end up sharing birthdays, holidays, weddings, hospital visits, children’s first milestones, and years of accumulated memories.

The people at the center of this particular circle are unusually intelligent, occasionally extraordinarily difficult, and almost universally convinced that they understand the world better than everyone else.

They are also, gradually and somewhat accidentally, a family.

At the center are seven people: Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper, Penny Hofstadter, Howard Wolowitz, Rajesh Koothrappali, Amy Farrah Fowler, and Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz. Around them is an enormous orbit of parents, siblings, grandparents, colleagues, former romantic partners, neighbors, and eventually children.

Their lives are connected primarily through Pasadena and the California Institute of Technology. Science is the common language between several of them, but it isn’t what ultimately keeps them together. What keeps them together is familiarity: years of knowing each other’s habits, insecurities, embarrassing histories, victories, failures, and families.

By the end of the period documented here, the original group has changed profoundly. Several are married. Several are parents. Careers have advanced. Some people have moved away and returned. Some relationships have ended permanently. Others have become lifelong commitments.

The group that once consisted largely of unmarried young scientists living in apartments has become an extended family.

LEONARD LEAKEY HOFSTADTER

Leonard Hofstadter is an experimental physicist and one of the central figures in the Pasadena scientific community.

He is a man who looks considerably more ordinary than his résumé suggests.

Leonard is relatively short and slender, with brown hair and glasses. His wardrobe tends toward casual academic clothing: jeans, sneakers, jackets, sweaters, and graphic T-shirts. He rarely appears particularly polished unless an occasion requires it. His physical appearance is unremarkable enough that someone meeting him for the first time would probably have no idea that he possesses an extraordinary intellect.

Leonard’s intelligence, however, is immediately apparent once he begins talking about his work.

He earned his doctorate unusually young and has spent his adult life immersed in experimental physics. He is deeply knowledgeable but doesn’t have Sheldon’s instinctive need to demonstrate that fact every few minutes.

That distinction is fundamental to Leonard’s personality.

Sheldon sees intelligence as one of the primary ways people should organize the world. Leonard sees intelligence as something he possesses but does not necessarily want to make the center of every human interaction.

He wants people to like him.

That desire is partly a consequence of his childhood.

Leonard was raised by two extraordinarily accomplished academics. His mother, Beverly Hofstadter, is a neuroscientist and psychiatrist whose approach to parenting was famously analytical. Leonard’s father, Alfred Hofstadter, was an anthropologist.

Leonard grew up surrounded by achievement but not necessarily emotional reassurance.

Beverly’s treatment of her children was often intellectually detached. She studied Leonard’s development almost as if he were one of her research subjects. Compliments were frequently connected to accomplishments. Emotional problems became psychological case studies.

Leonard therefore enters adulthood with a peculiar combination of enormous self-confidence in his intellectual abilities and profound insecurity about his emotional worth.

He knows he is smart.

He isn’t always convinced he is lovable.

His family reinforces the problem because his siblings are also highly accomplished. Leonard has an older brother, Michael, who becomes a Harvard law professor, and a sister involved in medical research.

Leonard’s relationship with his father is more complicated than his relationship with Beverly, particularly because Alfred’s later relationship with Sheldon creates an unusual family dynamic.

Leonard’s adult life changes dramatically when Penny moves into the apartment across the hall.

Penny is almost his complete opposite.

Leonard is academically oriented; Penny is socially intuitive. Leonard overthinks; Penny frequently acts. Leonard worries about what people think; Penny is generally comfortable with herself. Leonard grew up in an intensely academic environment; Penny comes from a Midwestern family with a much more ordinary background.

Yet the differences are exactly what attract them to each other.

Leonard is fascinated by Penny from the beginning. Their relationship takes years to stabilize because neither of them initially understands how different their emotional needs are.

Eventually, however, the relationship becomes one of the defining partnerships of the group.

Leonard and Penny marry.

Their marriage is not presented as the disappearance of their differences. Instead, the two learn how to live with them. Penny gradually becomes more comfortable with Leonard’s scientific world, while Leonard becomes more confident around Penny’s social world.

Leonard remains deeply connected to Sheldon even after his relationship with Penny changes his domestic life.

For years, Leonard and Sheldon live together in Apartment 4A. Their relationship is frequently exasperating. Sheldon is demanding, inflexible, and extraordinarily difficult to live with. Leonard is repeatedly placed in the position of negotiating between Sheldon’s worldview and ordinary reality.

Yet Leonard does not simply tolerate Sheldon.

He genuinely loves him.

Their relationship gradually becomes something resembling brotherhood.

By the end of the story, Leonard is married, professionally established, financially secure, and expecting to become a father.

The insecure young physicist who once wondered whether anyone could genuinely love him has built exactly the kind of family he spent much of his childhood wanting.

SHELDON LEE COOPER

Sheldon Cooper is a theoretical physicist from East Texas and perhaps the most intellectually unusual person in the entire circle.

He is tall and thin, with dark curly hair and a distinctive wardrobe consisting largely of layered shirts, long sleeves, jeans, and science-fiction or comic-book imagery.

His appearance changes relatively little over the years because Sheldon has never considered fashion a particularly important component of identity.

He considers himself a scientist first.

Almost everything about Sheldon reflects that identity.

He was a child prodigy. He attended college at an extraordinarily young age, completed his doctorate while still a teenager, and eventually became a prominent theoretical physicist.

His intellectual confidence is immense.

Sheldon possesses an IQ stated within the story as 187 and has an extraordinary memory. He can absorb and retain enormous amounts of information.

The problem is that Sheldon tends to assume intellectual ability makes him an authority on almost everything else.

He is extremely literal.

He dislikes ambiguity.

He dislikes unexpected changes.

He dislikes social conventions that he considers irrational.

He dislikes being wrong.

And he especially dislikes losing arguments.

Sheldon creates rules for nearly every aspect of life. His apartment arrangements, schedules, seating preferences, bathroom routines, household responsibilities, and interpersonal agreements can all become subjects of elaborate regulation.

Yet the rigidity hides a much more vulnerable person.

Sheldon grew up in Texas in a deeply religious family.

His mother, Mary Cooper, is a devout Christian whose worldview conflicts sharply with Sheldon’s scientific beliefs. His father, George Cooper Sr., was a football coach. Sheldon has an older brother, George Jr., and a fraternal twin sister, Missy.

His grandmother, Meemaw, is another major influence.

Sheldon often speaks about family members in analytical or dismissive terms, but his attachment to them is unmistakable.

Mary, in particular, occupies a complicated position in his life.

Sheldon may disagree with almost everything she believes, but he relies upon her emotionally.

His relationship with his twin sister is similarly strange. Missy is socially intuitive in ways Sheldon is not. She understands people instinctively, while Sheldon approaches social interaction almost as a scientific puzzle.

Sheldon initially believes that romantic relationships are unnecessary.

Then he meets Amy Farrah Fowler.

Amy is intelligent enough to understand him and sufficiently unconventional that Sheldon doesn’t immediately find her ordinary social behavior incomprehensible.

Their relationship begins as something closer to an intellectual partnership than conventional romance.

Over time, however, Amy becomes the most important person in Sheldon’s life.

She teaches him things that no academic institution could have taught him.

She teaches him compromise.

She teaches him affection.

She teaches him that another person’s feelings cannot always be reduced to logical propositions.

Sheldon eventually proposes marriage.

He and Amy marry.

Their scientific partnership becomes extraordinarily successful, culminating in work recognized by the Nobel Prize.

Their relationship also produces one of Sheldon’s greatest personal transformations: he becomes a husband who genuinely thinks about another person’s happiness.

Later, Sheldon and Amy become parents.

The children are not extensively developed within the established story, but their existence represents the culmination of a life Sheldon once would have considered incompatible with his identity.

PENNY HOFSTADTER

Penny is the person who initially seems least likely to belong in this world.

She comes from Nebraska and arrives in Pasadena intending to become an actress.

She is blonde, outgoing, expressive, socially confident, and comfortable in environments that would overwhelm many of the scientists around her.

Her clothing and appearance are considerably more fashion-conscious than those of the men in the group. She tends to present herself casually but attractively and is generally much more aware of social appearance than Leonard or Sheldon.

Penny’s intelligence is often misunderstood by the people around her.

She does not possess their academic credentials.

She does not enjoy physics.

She doesn’t want to spend an evening debating theoretical concepts.

But Penny has an excellent understanding of people.

She can often recognize emotional dynamics that Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, and Raj completely miss.

She understands embarrassment.

She understands attraction.

She understands jealousy.

She understands when somebody is lying.

She understands when Sheldon is being impossible.

Her family comes from a more conventional Midwestern background.

Her father, Wyatt, is deeply invested in his daughter’s happiness. Her mother is Susan. Her brother Randall has had legal trouble and other complications in his life.

Penny initially supports herself through restaurant work while attempting to establish herself as an actress.

The acting career does not develop as she hoped.

Eventually, Penny moves into pharmaceutical sales.

This becomes surprisingly successful.

She proves to be extremely capable at the job, financially outperforming several of her friends who have much more advanced academic qualifications.

Penny’s relationship with Leonard becomes the emotional foundation of her adult life.

She initially sees him as sweet but awkward.

Leonard initially sees her as the woman he has always wanted.

Their relationship goes through multiple stages before becoming permanent.

They eventually marry.

Penny becomes one of the most important people in Sheldon’s life as well, despite the fact that they frequently irritate each other.

Sheldon doesn’t always understand Penny’s emotional reactions, but he becomes deeply attached to her.

Penny also develops close friendships with Amy and Bernadette.

The three women eventually become almost as important to one another as the original male friendship group.

By the conclusion, Penny and Leonard are married and expecting their first child.

HOWARD JOEL WOLOWITZ

Howard Wolowitz is an aerospace engineer with a master’s degree from MIT.

He is shorter than most of the men around him, has dark curly hair, and has an unusually distinctive sense of fashion.

He favors retro clothing, bright colors, belts, accessories, and tightly coordinated outfits.

Howard is often the most outwardly theatrical member of the original group.

He wants attention.

He wants women to notice him.

He wants his accomplishments recognized.

He wants to be considered impressive.

For much of his younger adulthood, this manifests as inappropriate confidence and immature behavior.

The person who knows him best is his mother, Debbie.

Howard lives with his mother for years, and their relationship is simultaneously loving and dysfunctional. Debbie is intensely involved in his life, while Howard alternates between dependence on her and embarrassment about that dependence.

Howard’s romantic relationship with Bernadette changes him.

Bernadette is not impressed by his performances.

She expects responsibility.

She expects honesty.

She expects him to grow up.

Eventually, he does.

His career gives him one of the greatest accomplishments in the entire group: he becomes an astronaut and travels to the International Space Station.

The experience is terrifying for him in places, but it also establishes Howard as someone who has genuinely accomplished something extraordinary.

After marrying Bernadette, Howard becomes a father.

Their first child is Halley.

Their second is Neil Michael, usually called Michael.

Fatherhood does not eliminate Howard’s childish interests. He still enjoys games, comics, toys, and elaborate hobbies.

What changes is that those interests now coexist with responsibility.

Howard becomes a husband, father, engineer, astronaut, and devoted member of an increasingly complicated extended family.

His closest friend remains Raj.

BERNADETTE ROSTENKOWSKI-WOLOWITZ

Bernadette is physically small, blonde, and outwardly sweet.

That description is dangerously incomplete.

She possesses one of the strongest personalities in the group.

Bernadette is extremely intelligent, ambitious, competitive, stubborn, and capable of becoming frighteningly determined when she believes she is right.

She studies microbiology and eventually earns a doctorate.

Her professional career develops in pharmaceutical research, where she becomes successful enough to earn a substantial income.

She initially works alongside Penny at the Cheesecake Factory, which is how she becomes part of the larger circle.

Her relationship with Howard begins somewhat unexpectedly.

Howard initially approaches her in the same immature manner he approaches many women.

Bernadette doesn’t respond as he expects.

She establishes boundaries.

Howard eventually falls in love with her.

Bernadette’s family background is Catholic and Polish-American. She grew up in a large family environment and has siblings, although the series doesn’t develop every member of the family equally.

Her marriage to Howard produces a fascinating domestic balance.

Howard is physically larger and outwardly more theatrical.

Bernadette is physically tiny but often psychologically dominant.

Their household eventually includes two children.

Bernadette becomes one of the most successful professionals in the group while simultaneously becoming a mother.

She is also surprisingly protective of her friends.

She may insult them.

She may yell at them.

She may manipulate situations to get her way.

But she is deeply loyal.

RAJESH RAMAYAN KOOTHRAPPALI

Raj is an astrophysicist originally from India.

He comes from a wealthy family, and his upbringing is significantly more privileged than that of several of his American friends.

Raj is sensitive, romantic, stylish, and deeply interested in relationships.

He is also prone to anxiety about being alone.

Early in his adult life, he struggles to speak to women without alcohol. This becomes one of the most obvious manifestations of his social anxiety.

Over time, however, he grows considerably more confident.

Raj’s parents remain important in his life even while living in India.

His family expects him eventually to marry, and the subject of relationships is often complicated by cultural and familial expectations.

Raj has several important romantic relationships.

Emily Sweeney becomes one of his most significant long-term girlfriends.

Later, he becomes involved with Anu and becomes engaged to her.

The relationship ultimately ends rather than becoming a marriage.

Raj therefore remains unmarried at the conclusion.

This does not mean he is alone.

He has perhaps the most extensive social network of anyone in the group.

His closest relationship is with Howard.

The two have an unusually intense friendship that frequently resembles a marriage or sibling relationship despite neither interpretation being literally accurate.

Raj also develops strong relationships with Penny, Bernadette, Amy, Leonard, and Sheldon.

Professionally, he remains an astrophysicist.

He loves astronomy because it gives him a sense of wonder, and he is among the members of the group most naturally fascinated by the emotional implications of the universe.

AMY FARRAH FOWLER

Amy is a neuroscientist whose intellectual ability is extraordinary but whose social development initially lags behind her professional achievements.

She has a doctorate in neurobiology and an intense interest in science.

When she first enters the group’s orbit, she is almost like a female counterpart to Sheldon.

She is unusual.

She is socially awkward.

She is extremely intelligent.

She doesn’t initially understand conventional romance particularly well.

But unlike Sheldon, Amy gradually realizes that she wants emotional connection.

Her friendship with Penny becomes enormously important.

Penny introduces Amy to experiences she had previously dismissed or simply never encountered.

Amy discovers that she wants girlfriends.

She wants celebrations.

She wants romance.

She wants affection.

Eventually, she wants Sheldon.

Her relationship with Sheldon becomes the most transformative relationship of her life.

Sheldon learns emotional openness.

Amy becomes more socially confident.

They marry.

Their scientific partnership becomes internationally significant.

They receive the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work.

Amy eventually becomes a mother.

In many respects, she represents the transformation of the original scientific group from socially isolated academics into people capable of building families.

THE COOPER FAMILY

Mary Cooper is the deeply religious mother of Sheldon, Missy, and George Jr.

She is loving, protective, stubborn, and absolutely convinced of her religious worldview.

Her relationship with Sheldon is complicated because she accepts him as her son even when she fundamentally disagrees with his worldview.

George Cooper Sr., Sheldon’s father, was a football coach.

George’s relationship with Sheldon was considerably more strained, particularly because Sheldon was an extraordinarily unusual child.

Missy Cooper is Sheldon’s twin sister.

She is socially intuitive, attractive, practical, and much less academically obsessed than Sheldon.

George Jr. is Sheldon’s older brother.

He eventually builds a life and business of his own, although his relationship with Sheldon remains strained.

Meemaw, Sheldon’s grandmother, is one of the most important people in his childhood.

She understands him in ways that many other relatives do not.

She is affectionate toward him but not intimidated by his personality.

The Cooper family is therefore a mixture of extreme affection and constant conflict.

They love Sheldon.

They also frequently have absolutely no idea what to do with him.

THE HOFSTADTER FAMILY

Beverly Hofstadter is one of the most intellectually accomplished and emotionally unusual people in Leonard’s life.

She is a neuroscientist and psychiatrist.

Her approach to parenting was highly analytical.

This created enormous insecurity in him.

Howard and Bernadette create one of the first genuinely new family units to emerge from the original group.

Their children are:

Halley Wolowitz, their daughter.

Neil Michael Wolowitz, their son.

Howard’s mother, Debbie, becomes part of this extended family until her death.

Bernadette’s parents and siblings form another branch of the family, although they remain less developed than Howard’s immediate relatives.

Their household combines scientific careers, parenting, humor, financial success, and the continuing influence of Howard’s eccentric upbringing.

The next generation changes the social structure of the entire group.

Halley and Michael are the children of Howard and Bernadette.

Leonard and Penny’s child is expected near the end of the story.

Sheldon and Amy eventually have children.

These children are significant even though the original story does not develop them extensively.

For the first time, the friendships of the original seven become relationships between families.

Howard and Bernadette’s children have Leonard and Penny as friends of the family.

Sheldon and Amy’s children grow up with the children of their friends.

The scientific and social world that began around a few apartments eventually becomes something that can continue into another generation.

Leonard and Penny form the central romantic partnership.

And all seven eventually become interconnected.

There is no single person who controls the group.

Instead, each person occupies a different emotional position.

Leonard provides empathy.

Sheldon provides intellectual intensity.

Penny provides social intuition.

Howard provides humor and enthusiasm.

Raj provides sensitivity and romantic idealism.

Bernadette provides ambition and determination.

Amy provides emotional growth and intellectual partnership.

THE PLACES THEY LIVE

Apartment 4A is perhaps the most important physical location in the entire story.

It begins as Leonard and Sheldon’s shared home.

The apartment contains the living room where countless arguments and conversations occur, a kitchen that becomes a communal space, and bedrooms that represent the boundaries between their very different personalities.

Apartment 4B, directly across the hall, initially belongs to Penny.

That physical arrangement is symbolically important.

The two apartments are effectively neighboring worlds.

One contains theoretical physics, comic books, games, scientific discussions, and Sheldon’s rigid routines.

The other initially represents Penny’s social, romantic, and entertainment-oriented world.

Eventually the boundary between those worlds almost disappears.

Other important places include Caltech, the comic-book store, restaurants, Howard and Bernadette’s home, and the various apartments and houses occupied by Amy, Raj, and other members of their wider circle.

Pasadena itself becomes almost another character.

It is the environment in which all these otherwise incompatible people happen to meet.

THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD

Caltech is the intellectual center of the group.

Leonard works in experimental physics.

Sheldon works in theoretical physics.

Raj works in astrophysics.

Howard works as an aerospace engineer.

Amy works in neuroscience.

Bernadette works in pharmaceutical research.

Their professions are distinct enough that their conversations often cross disciplinary boundaries.

Howard is not a physicist in the same sense as Sheldon or Leonard, but his engineering expertise gives him practical technical skills.

Raj’s work is concerned with the universe on an astronomical scale.

Amy studies the brain.

Bernadette studies biological and pharmaceutical systems.

Leonard experiments with physical phenomena.

Sheldon searches for fundamental theoretical explanations.

Together, they represent almost every scale of scientific inquiry: the universe, matter, engineering, biology, the brain, and theoretical reality itself.

THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM

Stuart Bloom operates the comic-book store that becomes one of the group’s regular gathering places. He is socially awkward, financially struggling for much of his life, and considerably less confident than the scientists who frequent his store.

Barry Kripke is a Caltech physicist and one of Sheldon’s professional rivals. He has a distinctive speech impediment and enjoys irritating Sheldon.

Leslie Winkle is a physicist and Leonard’s former romantic partner. She is highly intelligent, skeptical, and professionally formidable.

Arthur Jeffries, better known to generations of viewers as Professor Proton, becomes an important mentor figure, particularly for Sheldon.

Wil Wheaton becomes an unlikely recurring presence in the group’s lives and eventually develops a complicated friendship with Sheldon.

Zack Johnson becomes an important figure in Penny’s life and an example of someone who lacks the academic interests of the main group while still being capable of genuine kindness.

Priya Koothrappali, Raj’s sister, has a significant relationship with Leonard before ultimately returning to India.

Emily Sweeney becomes one of Raj’s most serious romantic partners.

Anu becomes Raj’s later fiancée, although the relationship ultimately ends before marriage.

Bert Kibbler is a geologist at Caltech and another example of the university’s enormous ecosystem of eccentric scientists.

There is another family tree that matters more than blood.

Leonard is Sheldon’s closest long-term friend.

Penny becomes Leonard’s wife and Sheldon’s unlikely close friend.

Amy becomes Sheldon’s wife and Penny’s close friend.

Bernadette becomes Howard’s wife and Penny and Amy’s close friend.

Howard and Raj remain best friends.

Their marriages connect everyone else.

There isn’t really a “main character” by the end.

THE WORLD AT THE END

The people who inhabit this world are very different from the people they were when they first met.

Leonard is no longer simply the insecure physicist living with Sheldon. He is a husband and future father.

Penny is no longer the aspiring actress across the hall. She has established a successful professional career and married the scientist who once seemed completely outside her world.

Sheldon is no longer the young genius who believes human relationships are unnecessary complications. He is a husband, father, scientific collaborator, and Nobel laureate.

Amy has gone from socially isolated scientist to internationally recognized researcher, wife, and mother.

Howard has gone from immature bachelor living with his mother to astronaut, husband, and father.

Bernadette has built an accomplished scientific career while raising a family.

Raj remains the unmarried member of the original group, but he is surrounded by friends who have effectively become his family.

And the apartments that once contained a handful of socially awkward young adults have become the foundation of an enormous network of relationships.

That is ultimately what this universe is about.

Not physics.

Not romance.

Not even comedy.

It is about a group of people who initially have almost nothing in common except intelligence, proximity, and friendship, gradually becoming the kind of family that none of them could have predicted they would need.

The universe they study is unimaginably enormous.

Their own little universe, meanwhile, becomes surprisingly small.

Everyone knows everyone.

Everyone knows everyone’s parents.

Everyone knows everyone’s embarrassing stories.

Everyone has attended everyone else’s wedding.

Everyone has argued with everyone.
