Setting = Southern Colorado, town of Barren Creek, 1879. Barren Creek is a small, withering town of about 800 people. The city is located on a plateau surrounded by drought-resistant shrubs and cacti. The river that flowed through the city had dried up long ago, leaving behind a dried-up riverbed and sparse vegetation. The residents of the city are mainly engaged in agriculture, although the arid conditions make it difficult. Some residents also work in nearby mines and quarries.
