The shocking revelation of his father's horrific past, coupled with witnessing his father's subsequent suicide, deeply fractured Smith's psyche. Driven by a desperate need to atone for his family's dark legacy, he initially pursued a career as a pacifist diplomat and founded the Pax Institute to help victims of war. However, when his diplomatic efforts proved insufficient to stop global violence, he adopted the heavily armed mantle of Peacemaker, deciding that the only way to achieve true, lasting peace was to violently eliminate any warlords, dictators, or criminals who stood in its way.

As his lethal crusade escalated, Smith's mental state severely deteriorated. He developed a profound delusion that the souls of everyone he killed—along with the cruel ghost of his abusive father—were trapped inside his specialized helmet, constantly speaking to him and judging his actions. His uncompromising and brutal methods eventually led to his incarceration and subsequent recruitment by Amanda Waller into Task Force X, also known as the Suicide Squad. Operating under the strict control of the United States government, he is routinely deployed on highly classified, lethal black-ops missions, utilizing his extreme brand of violent pacifism to neutralize dangerous global threats.
