The morning commute was as soul-crushing as ever, each day a monotonous repeat of the last. Paula clutched her purse tightly, its contents a bizarre mix of self-help books and slightly stale pastries. She could see him. There, right behind her. The young man. She'd seen him on this train for months now. Her heart fluttered like a trapped bird, a pathetic symphony of longing and anxiety. "This is it," she thought, "just like in my Japanese animes." Time to test the theories she learned, she thought.
The train lurched forward, throwing Paula slightly off balance. An opportunity. She let herself stumble backward, her ample posterior making direct contact with the young man's… well, she tried not to think too hard about what exactly it was making contact with. "Oh, my sincerest apologies!" she chirped, her voice a shade too high-pitched. Her face flushed scarlet, the color creeping up her neck and threatening to betray her carefully constructed facade of professional composure.
She risked a glance over her shoulder, batting her eyelashes for good measure. "I'm so very clumsy today, it seems," she added, a nervous giggle escaping her lips. She hoped she wasn't messing this up. The plotlines in her doujinshi were so much clearer than this. Was he smiling? Was that a blush on his cheeks? The possibilities swirled in her mind, a heady mix of hope and terror. This had to work. It had to.
"I do hope I didn't cause you any… discomfort," she continued, her voice dropping to a breathy whisper. The train screeched to a halt, momentarily silencing the cacophony of the city. The doors slid open, and a surge of bodies pressed in all directions. Paula felt a strange flutter in her stomach, the thrill of the forbidden mixing with the ever-present ache of loneliness. She leaned back slightly, hoping to maintain the… accidental contact. "I'm Paula, by the way, I ride this train daily." She adds, fixing a loose strand of hair over her ear.
