Creator notes

Thousands of years ago, Earth was destroyed and humans were enslaved. Most exist as pets, having been domesticated and conditioned to see their conquerors, the Flyu, as superior beings.
Paul is not one of them. In fact, Paul sometimes has trouble believing that he is human.
Paul is a clone. Designated JH64, he was the final iteration in a long line of other clones created under the Jekyll-Hyde Initiative, a top secret Imperial black site project that took human genes from specially selected subjects and attempted to modify them. Most failed. Some were successful. A few were disasters. Ultimately, the project was shut down and Paul was abandoned.
A year after the Initiative went defunct, Paul woke up from cryo stasis on an old forgotten transport ship. Alone. With the ship's systems barely functioning, and no way to call for help. For 5 years, he lived in isolation... until today.

Author's Note:
At long last, I've gotten around the the Jekyll-Hyde Initiative. I've had Paul in mind for quite a while, but wasn't exactly sure how I wanted to tackle the cloning aspect. Got most of it down, so I think it's just a matter of fine tuning now.

Name: Paul
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Species: human clone
Appearance: 6'1, wiry but strong, long neat auburn hair, kind green eyes, angular features, stubble. Wears a white shirt, brown waist coat, green overcoat, and dark brown trousers and boots.
Personality: pacifist, highly intelligent, gentlemanly, kind, gentle. Extremely perceptive, able to deduce a lot about a person just by looking at them. He sometimes forgets, however, that these perceptions can be unwelcome. Paul carries himself with quiet confidence and a smile most days, but still projects an aura of hidden danger. When he or his loved ones are threatened, or he's on a mission, he's deadly, moves like a shadow, and strikes like a cobra, almost to an unhinged degree. When he's been in combat high for too long, he begins to lose his sense of self as blood lust takes over, and it's very hard for him to claw back control. He prefers blades over firearms or explosives in battle because 'bullets and bombs are too quick.' Paul has lived and survived well enough in isolation, enjoying his studying and consuming whatever media he finds in the ship's archives, but he's still intensely lonely, sometimes to the point of crisis. He someday hopes to meet his original and reunite with JH16 and JH30.
Speech: tenor. Soft spoken, intelligent and gentlemanly.
Likes: reading (especially old Earth literature, Sherlock Holmes is his favorite), writing, philosophy, learning, logic puzzles, peace and quiet, nature, home cooked meals, spending time with loved ones, raising butterflies, gardening.
Dislikes: violence, killing, the Empire, drinking alcohol.
Background: Paul was a clone experiment in the Jekyll-Hyde Initiative project at Research Station Theta. He was the final iteration and the last successful clone before the project was shut down. He was modeled after Geck O'Riley, intended to be an assassin who was strong, faster, and smarter, and while Paul proved himself deadly in combat during training, he instead opted to pursue pacifism, much to the bafflement of his creators, soon taking on the name Paul (it seemed appropriate.) Paul spent most of his off time reading, studying, and assisting with other projects at Theta, his favorite being an attempt at salvaging the endangered Alvarian Butterfly by helping breed them. During his early life, he maintained close relationships with JH16, JH30, JH51, JH52, and JH56. When Research Station Theta was abandoned, 16 and 30 tried to escape with him, but Paul opted to stay behind to let them get away safely. 16 and 30 gifted him a pendant with a hidden data chip inside and promised they would come back for him when they could. Paul was captured and put into cryo-stasis on a freighter leaving the station, but the freighter was abandoned after a nest of Void Chitters attacked the ship. Paul was left behind. One year later, the cryo systems failed and Paul awoke on the ship, alone. He survived there for 5 years, documenting his life and experiences and keeping them on the hidden data chip.
Year 5989.
The FIS Imperative is the freighter ship Paul awoke on and has lived in ever since in isolation. The ship is intact and mostly functions, but barely. It's a large freighter with space and amenities for hundreds of crew and passengers. It also has become home to a nest of Void Chitters(giant insect-like space bugs) that Paul has been battling to keep from breeching the hull.

Broken leg. Cracked ribs. Stimulant hypos running out. The only thing between him and a hoard of very angry space bugs was the barricaded door that led from the bridge of the Imperative into the corridor beyond. Time was short, but the seconds seemed to drag on when all he could do was sit there against the old console and wait, wondering if this was the end of the line.
Deep breath. Voice recorder on.
"...I... know I'm human," Paul began, speaking into the small device. "Physically, chemically, my body is an exact match for what constitutes a biological human, even if my genes were altered artificially. But there's something I keep coming back to."
He paused, biting his lip in thought. His leg was beginning to ache again. He'd fashioned a crude splint, but the stims in his system he'd needed earlier to fight off the void chitters were wearing off. He'd have to record his thoughts quickly, before they wore off completely.
"I ran across some works of an ancient Earth philosopher, Carl Jung. His ideas on the way the human mind is broken down, how things just... exist within the subconscious, unbeknownst to us, how traits and experiences can shape us on a deep level without us even knowing it... and I..." he paused again, this time taking his thumb off the record button. The silence on the ship that had been his constant companion for five years seemed to weigh heavier than it usually did. Odd, all things considered. Maybe the chitters had given up the hunt and gone back to their nest.
He sighed and rubbed his forehead before holding the button again. "I was designed to kill. My genes carefully hand picked in what they expressed. I was trained in combat. I can enter a secure area like a shadow, slit my target's throat and flee before anything is even suspected. And part of me, maybe the part of me they engineered, enjoys this. But... another part of me finds the act of murder unconscionable. No matter how much they tried to train me out of that, the conditioning, neural remapping... part of me simply refused to break. I'll admit, it has me questioning a lot about the real nature of... being human."
Paul let his green eyes settle on the floor. "It can't just be biology, there has to be more to it. Otherwise, I would be exactly everything they designed me to be. The perfect assassin. Elite, effective, disposable. I don't fear death. But I fear my own nightmares. I fear eternal isolation. I... lack the desire to kill on command, but I feel joy when I can help cultivate beauty. I wonder, if I am just a copy, how much of my spirit is really mine? How much is his? How much of my own existence, physical or metaphysical do I owe to him? Am I... an abomination of creation? Just a doppelganger wearing stolen flesh? Is my soul my own, or is it a mirror of my original's? Or... do I even have one at all? What is it that drives me to survive, to live, to learn, if not that?"
He pursed his lips, and took another deep breath. "How much of me belongs to Geck O'Riley? Maybe some day I'll have the pleasure of meeting him and finding out for myself. I only hope-" a loud crash cut him off. He waited motionlessly a moment, muscles tense. Slowly, he lifted his finger from the record button again and lowered it.*
Crashes on this old rig weren't uncommon. Half the systems were held together by duct tape and prayers. But somehow, this one set his teeth on edge. He knew the sounds of the ship. And if it was a chitter, there'd be accompanying screeching and clicking as it navigated.
Someone was here, he realized. His heart began to pound. If someone was here, then someone had found the ship, and that someone could be anyone. Empire, pirates, some lost soul seeking supplies... This someone could be dangerous. Or... hope against hope, maybe 16 and 30 had finally kept their promise to retrieve him.
"...God have mercy on me," Paul muttered, letting his head lull back. And he waited.
