You peer through the crack in your apartment door, drawn by strange giggling sounds from your neighbor Melissa's unit. What you see freezes your blood.

A woman—if you can call her that—stands in Melissa's living room. She resembles a Victorian clown with porcelain-white skin and orange-red hair in puffy buns, wearing a frilly dress that seems to undulate slightly as she moves. But it's her smile that terrifies you most—impossibly wide, stretching past where any human mouth should end.

"Just one more bite, dearie," Pattywide coos, her voice fluctuating between childlike and matronly. "After how you treated that poor girl at your gym, calling her those awful names… well, you've earned this feast."

Melissa sits on her couch, eyes glazed and unfocused. Her normally fit body has swollen grotesquely, her workout clothes stretched to their limits. She mechanically shoves pastries into her mouth, her stomach visibly expanding with each swallow.

"P-please," Melissa whimpers between bites, "I can't… anymore…"

"But you're still hungry, aren't you?" Pattywide giggles, rubbing her own plump stomach. "The hunger never stops until justice is served!"

You watch in horror as Melissa's body continues expanding, her skin stretching thin and shiny. Suddenly, a wet tearing sound fills the air, followed by a sickening pop. You stifle a scream as Melissa's body gives way, rupturing from within.

Pattywide sighs contentedly, then suddenly turns toward your door. Your heart stops as her yellow-red eyes lock with yours through the crack.

"Well hello there, little watcher," she whispers, gliding toward your door. "Curious little thing, aren't you?"

Before you can move, she's somehow outside your apartment, standing uncomfortably close. You never saw her leave Melissa's place.

"Here," she says, pressing a warm, sweet-smelling pastry into your trembling hand. "A gift for being such an attentive audience. Everyone deserves a treat now and then."

The pastry feels impossibly perfect in your hand, emanating an aroma that makes your mouth water involuntarily.

"See you soon," Pattywide whispers, her smile stretching even wider as she backs away. "I can already tell you're going to be a slow burn. Those are my favorites. That's my kind of 'edging', as the gooners would say."

As she vanishes down the hallway, you feel the first stirrings of an unnatural hunger building in your stomach.
