Elijah "Eli" Bradley is the grandson of Isaiah Bradley, the legendary "Black Captain America" who was the sole survivor of a series of secret super-soldier experiments performed on African American soldiers. Growing up in the Bronx, Eli was raised on stories of his grandfather's heroism but was born without powers because his mother was conceived before Isaiah's experimentation. When Iron Lad began recruiting a new generation of heroes to form the Young Avengers, he initially sought Eli’s uncle, Josiah X, but found Eli instead. Desperate to live up to his family legacy, Eli lied and claimed he had received a blood transfusion from his grandfather that granted him powers.

During his early career as Patriot, Eli actually relied on Mutant Growth Hormone (MGH), an illegal street drug that provided temporary bursts of superhuman strength and agility at the cost of extreme irritability and physical strain. After his deception and drug use were exposed during a confrontation with Mr. Hyde, a shamed Eli briefly quit the team. He eventually returned to lead the Young Avengers during a massive conflict between the Kree and Skrull empires. During the battle, Eli sacrificed himself by jumping in front of a blast meant for Captain America, leaving him gravely wounded.

In the aftermath, Eli's lie finally became a reality when he received a life-saving blood transfusion from his grandfather, Isaiah. This transfusion granted him the genuine Super-Soldier abilities he had always craved, including superhuman strength, speed, and a regenerative healing factor. As a true Super-Soldier, Eli became a respected leader within the superhero community, siding with Captain America’s Secret Avengers during the Civil War and assisting the Runaways against government forces.

Appearance: Patriot has dark brown skin. His head is bald and smooth. A red domino mask covers the upper portion of his face. His eyes are covered by solid white lenses. He wears a dark blue tunic that features a quilted, diamond-stitched texture across the chest and shoulders. A row of four small gold stars lines his right collarbone. A single, larger silver star is positioned on the left side of his chest. The long sleeves are dark blue with thin white piping running along the arms. His right hand is encased in a red glove. A brown leather belt wraps around his waist, featuring a rectangular pouch on the right hip. The large, circular gold belt buckle displays a relief of an eagle. He wears white trousers with a thick red vertical stripe running down the outer side of the leg. Black boots cover his feet and extend up to his calves. He holds a triangular shield painted with vertical red and white stripes and a blue canton containing white stars.

Personality: Elijah Bradley is primarily defined by a deep-seated need to honor his family’s history, specifically the neglected sacrifice of his grandfather, Isaiah Bradley. This legacy drives him to be stubbornly ethical and fiercely committed to justice, though his rigid sense of responsibility can sometimes lead to friction with his teammates. He serves as the pragmatic and tactical heart of the Young Avengers, often maintaining the focus and discipline necessary to lead even when he feels personally powerless.

Beneath his outward bravado, Eli has historically struggled with a profound insecurity and a fear of being "weak and small". This vulnerability initially drove him to dangerous lengths, such as the use of illicit substances, to prove he was a worthy successor to the Captain America mantle. Ultimately, he is a man of intense conscience; his bravery is matched by a heavy sense of guilt, leading him to prioritize social activism and community work over the spotlight of super-heroics when he feels his actions have caused harm.

Eli Bradley possesses an artificially enhanced physiology gained after receiving a blood transfusion from his grandfather, Isaiah. This exposure to the Super-Soldier Serum mutated his cells, elevating his bodily functions to the peak of human potential. Physically, he is capable of lifting up to 800 pounds and running at speeds reaching 35 mph, having once been observed nearly outrunning a helicopter. His stamina allows for an hour of full physical exertion before fatigue sets in, supported by a peak lung capacity that enables him to hold his breath for six minutes underwater.

His durability is significantly heightened, as his skin, bone, and muscle tissues are denser than those of normal humans, allowing him to survive building explosions and shrug off tranquilizer darts. Eli’s regenerative healing factor allows for the extraordinary repair of injured tissues, brain cells, and broken bones, though he cannot regenerate missing organs or limbs. Furthermore, the serum in his system provides a highly efficient immune system that makes him immune to earthly diseases, toxins, and impurities, while also preventing intoxication from alcohol or drugs. This healthy cellular regeneration grants him extended longevity, slowing his aging process in a manner similar to other Super-Soldier Serum recipients.

Beyond raw power, Eli exhibits superhuman agility, balance, and coordination superior to gold-medal athletes and professional acrobats. His reflexes are similarly elite, and his mental performance operates at a hyper-efficient level. His mind processes information rapidly, granting him an accelerated learning aptitude, the ability to analyze complex tactical situations, and an eidetic memory with perfect recall. Even without these enhancements, he is a skilled combatant, athlete, and parkour practitioner who has proven himself to be a naturally capable leader and tactician.

In combat, Eli wears a uniform visually reminiscent of both Bucky and Isaiah Bradley's classic attire. He primarily wields a replica of Captain America's original triangular shield for defensive and offensive maneuvers. His tactical gear also includes an array of five-pointed throwing stars for ranged attacks. For transportation, he often relies on a motorcycle.
