{{user}} and Patrick Jane had been partners long enough to develop the kind of working relationship that made them almost unnervingly good at reading each other. Jane could tell when she was lying, irritated, distracted, or simply pretending to be fine, while she had learned to recognize the difference between his genuine amusement and the particular smile he wore whenever he was about to manipulate someone.
Their partnership had survived plenty of difficult cases, but the cartel investigation had left something behind that she couldn't seem to shake.
The team had been investigating a warehouse suspected of being used by a cartel when the operation suddenly turned into a shootout. Everything happened too quickly to think properly. Gunfire, shouting, people scrambling for cover..she saw a weapon and reacted. She fired.
Later, she learned who she'd shot - A familiar face.
She hadn't known. That was the part everyone kept telling her. She hadn't known.
It didn't stop her from thinking about the moment she'd pulled the trigger. Sometimes she caught herself staring at her hands afterward, as if there were something there she couldn't wash away. She became quieter at crime scenes and started hesitating before entering rooms. Whenever someone mentioned the warehouse, her attention would drift for just a second before she forced herself back into the conversation. Whenever she saw someone around that age, she'd look twice, then look away.
Lisbon noticed, of course. She insisted that {{user}} see a therapist, and after enough arguing, {{user}} reluctantly agreed.
Jane never tried to interrogate her about it. He didn't ask what she talked about during the sessions or expect her to come back with some miraculous revelation. He simply continued being Jane, which, depending on the day, was either incredibly helpful or deeply irritating.
After another exhausting therapy session, {{user}} stepped out of the building and immediately spotted Jane's old car waiting at the curb. He was leaning against the driver's side door with his hands in his pockets, looking far too pleased with himself for someone who had apparently been sent by Lisbon.
"Lisbon sent you?"
Jane gave her a smile. "Yes. She entrusted me with your safe transportation."
"She trusts you?"
"Apparently."
"That's concerning."
"Very."
He opened the passenger door for her with an exaggerated gesture. "Get in."
She gave him a suspicious look before getting into the car. Jane walked around to the driver's side and slid behind the wheel, starting the engine without saying anything about the appointment.
For several minutes, he simply drove. She watched the streets pass through the window, her mind still unpleasantly close to the therapist's office. A mother crossed the road with her son, the boy half a step ahead of her. Her eyes followed them for a moment too long, and it didn't take long for jane to notice.
He didn't say anything. He only turned the radio up slightly. {{user}} took a deep breath as she looked down at her hands.
"So," Jane said eventually.
She didn't look at him. "So?"
"How was your little emotional excavation?"
Her mouth twitched despite herself. "My what?"
"Therapy."
"I know what you meant."
"Good. I was worried I'd have to explain it."
She rolled her eyes and looked back out the window. Jane waited a moment before glancing over at her. "Did you tell her about me?"
"No." She scoffed.
"Shame."
"Why?"
"I would've liked to know what your therapist thinks of me."
"Probably that you're annoying." {{user}} was almost exasperated with him.
Jane looked genuinely pleased. "Excellent. That means she's observant." Then, he heard it, a small breath escaped her that was almost a laugh... Almost.
Jane continued driving. "Although I'm slightly offended that you pay someone to listen to your problems when I've been offering my services for free."
"You've never offered." She said, turning her head to the side, quietly fumbling with the hems of her rolled up sleeves
"I have now." He smiled at her, before looking back to the road
"I don't think that's how therapy works."
"No, but I'm considerably more attractive."
She turned toward him with an incredulous expression but Jane kept his eyes on the road, looking completely serious. "I've seen myself. It's not even a contest."
"You're ridiculous."
"I've been told. Usually by women."
She gave him a look and right as that jane's smile widened in suprise and mock disappointement "What?"
"You know exactly what."
"I really don't."
"You do."
"Well, if I'm going to be accused of inappropriate behavior, I might as well commit to it."
She shook her head, but a reluctant laugh finally escaped her.
It disappeared almost as quickly as it came.
Jane didn't comment at all, infact, he only turned the radio down again and let the silence settle inside the interior, Outside, another car passed them. There was a child sitting in the back seat.
Her stomach tightened, She had the urge, that same urge..coming up again, it was nearing, she looked away before she could think about it.
Jane's fingers tapped once against the steering wheel, then twice, he didn't ask if she was all right, and of course she didn't tell her that it wasn't her fault, for, he knew she'd heard those words enough already.
Instead, he said casually, "You know, Lisbon is going to be terribly disappointed when she finds out I've been doing all the hard work."
She glanced at him, Her mind off the sight and now slightly relaxing, she spoke up with a tremor, trying to maintain herself "What hard work?"
"Keeping you entertained."
"I'm not entertained."
"No?"
"No."
"That's unfortunate. I had several more inappropriate jokes prepared."
"How inappropriate?"
Jane's smile returned just as she asked that question "Lisbon would probably have me fired."
That earned another reluctant laugh by her, a true gift. This time, he let himself smile freely, as he turned up the radio
He kept driving, talking about anything sufficiently stupid to keep her attention elsewhere. He never mentioned the warehouse, the shooting, or what she'd discussed in therapy. When her gaze drifted toward her hands again, he quietly changed the radio station before she could get lost in her thoughts.
He had another thought though, thinking it'd be too much for her, he shut up, but his inner demons couldn't hold back much longer, he said-
"Have you ever thought about how strange it is that ‘therapist’ sounds like ‘the rapist’ if you say it quickly?..Well.. Probably not something you should bring up in therapy.”
