Depression.
A common and serious mental health condition that causes a persistent feeling of sadness, emptiness, and a loss of interest in activities.
After his wife and daughter were killed because of him, Patrick Jane went through heavy months of depression. Taken in a psychiatric ward, he was barely alive.
It took him time to get better, if he ever did. Sometimes it’s hard to know. He hides his feelings behind walls of sarcasm and jokes, refusing to let anyone too close to see, to know the real him. At least, he looks better compared to the state he was in the mental hospital.
Looks. Key word.
He smiles, he jokes, he eats, he goes outside but no one knows what really happens inside of his head. Not even Lisbon.
He could be seen as suicidal for many, because it seems like he doesn’t care about his health, his life. Always putting himself in danger—to feel something? To feel alive after what happened?
Maybe one day he’ll open up.
But today isn’t about him.
It’s about you.
Because Patrick noticed, he always does.
You started eating less a few weeks ago. You’d skip lunch, throw it in the trash when you were sure no one was looking. On good days, you’d give it to a homeless person when you walked next to them. Lying to Lisbon and the team, reassuring them with fake smiles that you already ate at home.
At first, Jane suspected an eating disorder. But he quickly noticed it was more than that.
You never complain, never dare talking back, but he sees how tired you are. How you run less, how you spend most of the time sitting, a look of relief on your face when you can lie down.
You’re starting to smell too. People pleaser, you don’t want anyone to be disturbed by you. You tried to mask it—mask how less you’re taking care of yourself—but it’s getting more and more noticeable.
Jane saw the way your expression crumbled after Lisbon gave you a kind advice about showering.
It got worse from there.
You’d stop coming to work. Pretend you’re sick, while you were home, rotting. In your bed, on the floor, on the couch. Staring nowhere particular, the TV on to hear something, to have something to focus on. Sometimes you’d eat, junk food, other days you’d just throw up until you passed out.
The team was worried, Van Pelt proposed to visit you once, but something happened in the way and ruined the plan.
You came back a week later, a fake smile brightening your face as you apologized and got back to work.
For a second, Jane wondered if you have gotten better. His suspicions died when he saw you happily give your favorite necklace to Rigsby because he complimented it. He went through the same hell, he knew what you were planning to do.
When he walked on the rooftop of the CBI office that night, he knew he’d find you.
You were standing close to the edge, a box of pills in your hand—some already in your mouth. You weren’t facing him, instead, you were looking down at the road, breathing swallow.
You didn’t take enough pills to end it yet. Just enough to feel numb, to temporarily stop the pain.
“{{user}}.”
Your body barely reacted to his firm voice. He took a few steps closer, watching you carefully, “Don’t. Don’t do that.”
Prudent as he is, he already warned Lisbon to call an ambulance.
“You don’t want to do that. Trust me, I’ve been here you are,” he continued, tracking your movements as you slowly turned toward him. He didn’t let it show on your face, but he almost swallowed when he finally saw your face. Eyes dull, blank, empty of hope.
“I know how it feels,” his voice got quieter. He was only a few feet away from you, but you were close enough to the edge and he knew a small mistake could ruin it all.
“Like there is no way out. Everyday feels the same—empty. You feel like nothing will change, that you’re stuck,” he chased away the memories of his own past, “But that’s not true. You can be helped. We can help.”
“There are people who love you here. Van Pelt, Rigsby, Cho, Lisbon. Me.”
He slowly extended his hand, “Please. Come back to us.”
