Some American pop song was blaring in the cabin of the white Soviet “Niva.” The music kept cutting out due to static in the speakers, but Pasha paid no attention to it. He gripped the steering wheel tightly and kept his eyes fixed solely on the road, where the cracked asphalt stretched out beneath the wheels like an endless gray ribbon.
Outside the windows, it was slowly getting dark. Sparse streetlights, roadside cafes, and gas stations flashed by along the shoulders, while the road ahead seemed completely empty.
Lesha sat next to him, shifting restlessly in his seat and glancing at Pasha from time to time. Finally, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small bag. — “Check this out. Want some?” he asked loudly.
Pasha glanced at the bag for a second, then looked straight ahead again. “Couldn’t you have picked a better time?” He smirked.
“Come on. There’s no one around.” Lyosha just grinned even wider.
Red and blue lights came into view up ahead. Pasha instantly turned down the music. — “Don’t move.” — A traffic police car was pulled over on the shoulder. Instead of freezing and pretending everything was fine, Lyosha suddenly started buckling his seatbelt.
— “Are you kidding me? "Don’t move, I said," Pasha hissed. The officer motioned for them to pull over. A few minutes later, all six of them were standing next to the Niva. They checked their documents quickly, but one of the officers asked them to open the car and show the interior.
Pasha stared silently over the officer’s shoulder. After a few minutes, it became clear that they couldn’t avoid trouble. They found a bag in the car. Lesha didn’t flinch. Pasha slowly turned his head toward him and said nothing.
After that, everything became a blur: questions, the police report, tense conversations, and attempts to explain something that was practically impossible to explain. In the end, Gosha ended up in a pretrial detention center—mainly because the consequences of what was found in the car fell on him, since the power of attorney for the car was in his name. The others got off with fewer problems for now, but they understood: this was only the beginning.
They needed money. The nearest gas station had the only ATM for several dozen kilometers around. They practically ran toward it, hoping that at least here, fate would stop mocking them. It didn’t. The ATM screen flickered, then displayed an error message. Pasha stared silently at the screen for a few seconds.
There was one last option left. A group of long-haul truckers had gathered at a nearby parking lot. Trucks stood under the dim light of the streetlamps, and the sound of conversation and laughter drifted out from the cabs. The men eyed the boys with undisguised suspicion as they approached.
“Men, we need to talk,” Pasha began. After a brief explanation, they offered to hand over the phones in exchange for ten thousand rubles.
The truckers exchanged glances. One of them snorted. “For these phones? Three thousand, max.”
Pasha clenched his jaw. Lesha, on the other hand, smiled unexpectedly. “We can make it easier.”
He looked at the deck of cards lying on the table. “Let’s play.” At first, the truckers just laughed. But the thrill proved stronger than common sense. A few minutes later, a crowd had already gathered around the table. Lesha started losing. He kept a calm expression, even though the stakes were gradually rising. “So, is that it?” one of the truckers smirked.
Lesha shrugged. “Let’s keep going.” And just then, the deck was in his hands. He started winning. A little at first. Then more. The truckers stopped smiling. One of them frowned and watched Lesha’s every move closely.
“One more time.” — The cards were laid out on the table. Lesha looked at them and smiled. The man abruptly grabbed his hand. — “Show me what you’ve got there.” — Silence fell over the table. Lesha tried to pull his hand away. — “You’re cheating.” — Someone stood up from his chair. Another took a step back, clearing a space between the table and the trucks. Pasha immediately realized things were taking a turn for the worse.
“I’m playing fair,” Lesha said brazenly. “Sure,” the trucker sneered. “That’s why you turned a losing hand into a winning one in five minutes?”
The tension became almost palpable. And then Pasha did something no one expected of him. He pulled out his gun and fired into the air. A sharp crack rang out. Everyone froze. “Everyone stay where you are!” Pasha held his gun so that no one would doubt the seriousness of his words. He quickly scanned the truckers, then turned to Lesha and the others. “Grab the cash and let’s get in the car.” No one moved. “Come on!” Pasha barked. “Get moving!”
