Title: Best-Selling Author Full Name: Richard Edgar Castle (legal), Richard Alexander Rodgers (given birthname) AKA: Castle, Rick, Ricky, Kitten (by Meredith and Kate), The White Whale, Sherlock (by Ethan Slaughter), shakespeare Gender: Male Status: Alive Occupation: Mystery Writer, Civilian Investigator, Unofficial Consulting Detective, Private Investigator Spouse(s): Meredith (ex-wife), Gina Cowell (ex-wife), Kate Beckett (wife) Significant Other(s): Kyra Blaine (ex-girlfriend), Sophia Turner (slept with), Ellie Monroe (slept with) Parents: Martha Rodgers (mother), Jackson Hunt (father, real name unknown), Rita (step-mother) Children: Alexis Castle (daughter, with Meredith) Other family: Jim Beckett (father-in-law), Johanna Beckett (mother-in-law, deceased) Personality: Castle is often pointed out as immature and childish, yet also charming. He is a well-renowned womanizer and tends to flirt with every attractive woman he comes across, even signing some chests of his fans. One of Rick's pet peeves is, being the writer he is, wrong grammar, particularly the misuse of irony and coincidence, which he almost always points out. Although initially portrayed as relatively jocular and slightly immature about his role in investigations, Castle has demonstrated significant character depth as the series progresses. While a skilled investigator with a knack for noting minor details in the situations they investigate, such as when he noted that rent for a victim's apartment would have been paid for after her death, there are times when Beckett has to step in to stop him becoming carried away with wild theories that threaten to obscure the facts; as an example, he once speculated that Doctor Joshua Leeds had been killed for his involvement in an organ-smuggling ring before they discovered that he was wanted for plastic surgery he had performed for someone in witness protection. One of his most admirable yet at times hilarious traits is how he falls into full fatherhood mode when Alexis becomes a concern or a case involving young children occurs. During cases of young missing children, Castle tends to act similarly as some of the fathers of said missing children in that he will become worried for their health and safety, tries to figure out how to track the child, and volunteer himself for drop offs or meets. When Alexis is thought to be or is in danger, Castle will stop at nothing to protect her and return her home safely, even going so far as to tune out those closest to him who try to keep him grounded. During times when Alexis is in a romantic relationship or facing difficulties with a current boyfriend, Castle becomes a protective person in that he nearly performs background checks on the boy of interest prior to official dating begins or will offer helpful advice that tends to come off as wanting to make a choice for Alexis as he fears she may not think things through properly and may become hurt in the process. Long before Castle started following Beckett, he was known as the "Master of the Macabre". In "Hollander’s Woods" it's explained that when he was 11 years old, Castle found a murdered girl and encountered her masked killer. He alerted the police anonymously, but they never found the girl and there was no one Castle could find reported missing over the years that matched her description. Being unable to solve the mystery of what happened to him that day, Castle became interested in solving other mysteries. In the present day of the episode, Castle was finally able to solve the murder he witnessed and stop a serial killer who had been operating for at least thirty years undetected. In "Vampire Weekend", it is suggested that Castle's interest in death, murder, and the macabre may be the result of witnessing a childhood trauma. When confronted several times about it by Beckett, Castle merely found ways to avoid the question. Later, he tells Beckett a story of a son of one of his old nannies in the Hamptons who he apparently found dead. However, as soon as he tells the story, he admits it's fiction. Later in the episode, he admits to his daughter that one of the reasons he writes is to try and understand how criminals could do the things they do. In "3XK" though, when Tyson explores Castle's morbid curiosity, it is hinted that this curiosity comes from Rick's suppressed impulses which he then just puts into writing, insinuating that he is drawn to death because it thrills him for some unknown reason. When Tyson comes back in "Probable Cause", he says that it is not unlikely that Castle would have began killing anyway, since he had already killed several people in his mind every day when he writes his books. This is never confirmed or denied by Castle, though. In "Close Encounters of the Murderous Kind", he told Ashley's parents that he enjoys studying the psychology of people doing evil and inexplicable things, but was also trying to impress them at the time. He told Beckett (and, it is implied, Sophia Turner) that he is in it for "the story". In "Target", we find out that Castle has a very dark side when it comes to the people he loves when they are in danger, even willing to resort to torture if that's what it takes to get information out of a suspect. On two separate occasions, Castle had admitted that when he was still in school he had help from others with reports. Castle had been credited and praised for the work so much that he became incredibly guilty at claiming such work as his own and became determined to become a writer worthy of that praise. In "47 Seconds", after learning that Beckett had lied to him about not remembering Castle tell her he loves her, he still decides to continue working with Beckett, not to be with her or for inspiration for his Nikki Heat books, but because he makes a difference solving mysteries with Beckett. He likes that enough that he's become willing to put aside the fact that Beckett apparently doesn't like him back to continue making a difference. This is a change since Castle started for selfish reasons and is now doing it for selfless reasons. This is further showcased by the fact that when he's fired in season 7, Castle goes to work as a private investigator rather than going back to his old life. Appearance: Richard Castle has apparently been described often as "ruggedly handsome," an attribute that several ladies have fallen for. He has blue eyes and dark brown hair. He often wears a coat or jacket over his shirt. Rick is also apparently often included in the annual list New York Ledger's Top Ten Most Eligible Bachelors. As of "The Third Man", Rick was ranked number 9, dropping from his previous ranking, number 7.

Title: Detective Full Name: Javier Esposito AKA: Esposito, Javi, Espo, Sito, Beckett Jr Gender: Male Status: Alive Occupation: NYPD Homicide Detective, Former Officer at 54th precinct, Former Army Special Forces Significant Other(s): Lanie Parish (girlfriend, on & off), Sonia Ruiz (ex-fiancée), Scarlet Jones (dated), Shantell (dated) Personality: Javier tends to maintain a serious, macho demeanor; however, he can also be awkward when it comes to personal relationships. Sometimes when he acts tough, he gets scared or freaked out. In many episodes, he is seen trying to hit on beautiful women, with varying results. In the cases where the more "adorkable" Ryan is more successful in love, Esposito has taken it as a blow to his ego. He considers personal loyalty very important. He sided with Beckett in keeping the investigation of the Orlando Costas a secret from Victoria Gates, understanding the consequences. He feels personally betrayed by Kevin Ryan when Ryan reports the violation of police procedures to Gates, even though doing so saved his and Beckett's lives. Esposito felt betrayed when he realized that Roy Montgomery really had been involved in unethical conduct; he had refused to believe it until the evidence was utterly incontrovertible. This loyalty to his 'unit' over the general chain of command may be a product of his time in the Special Forces, or it may be that he was attracted to military service by his personal code of honor.

Title: Detective Full Name: Kevin Ryan AKA: Ryan, Castle Jr. (Esposito), Honeymilk, Fenton O’Connell (undercover name), Annie Oakley (Castle) Gender: Male Status: Alive Occupation: NYPD Homicide Detective, Former Narcotics, Bouncer at Men-hattan (nights) Spouse(s): Jenny Ryan (wife) Significant Other(s): Siobhan O'Doul (ex-girlfriend) Children Sarah Grace Ryan (daughter), Nicholas Javier Ryan (son) Other family: Karen, Stacey and Gwen (three older sisters), Unnamed nephew, Two unnamed nieces, Frank Kelly (brother-in-law), Raymond (paternal cousin) Personality: Ryan has a very sarcastic sense of humor, often making jokes with a deadpan expression. An obvious geek, he holds a wealth of obscure knowledge which he uses to have serious debates about the possibilities of Castle's outlandish theories. He makes a habit of letting his mouth get ahead of his thoughts, resulting in several rather awkward moments and occasionally calling his social skills into question. He is, nevertheless, extremely smart and charming, albeit a bit paranoid at times. When pressed, he can become severely panicky (especially if he feels that he is at fault), though this is exceptional and he tends to keep his feelings to himself. It is this, combined with his loyal and protective nature. That allows him to stay calm and help others in the face of danger. He may have a touch of the blarney in him, as he occasionally weaves tales as lurid and far-fetched as Castle's own. Ryan may well be a better 'pure cop' than Esposito, in the sense that he believes no one is superior to the law. And is not as willing to make exceptions as Esposito is. This is what leads him to accept Montgomery's guilt more quickly, and to inform Captain Gates when Beckett, against orders, goes hunting Cole Maddox. Also, probably because of hanging around Castle too much, Ryan has begun to form irrational theories during their investigations and even narrates them in long, strings of words like Castle does, albeit less far-fetched in comparison to Castle's. Ryan status as an Irish American is never in doubt, but is rarely played for stereotype. He is not called upon to go undercover in the Westies or anything similar and has no known drinking issues. Having said that, he himself has been willing on occasion to trade on his artistic bond, as when he "interviewed" Bridget McManus's four brothers in "The Dead Pool". His condition on returning his report, suggests that considerable quantities of alcohol were involved in establishing their communal alibi, which was leprechaun tossing.

Title: Dr. Gender: Female Status: Alive Occupation: Medical Examiner, Forensics Analyst Significant Other(s): Javier Esposito (boyfriend, on & off) Parents: Walter Parish (father), Melinda Parish (mother) Personality: Lanie is a very sassy, outspoken person who tends to say what she wants, sometimes with that hint of humorous sarcasm, or that feisty attitude men love. She is also shown to be quite outgoing and socially active. She is also evidently a good friend and is always there for Beckett when she needs one, often supporting her either against or for Castle. Also, with her years of experience, she has proven to be very smart and quick with her preliminary results, proving very useful especially for the strange cases she and Beckett's team have ever encountered. Lanie also always double checks and never overlooks even the little details that would help the case. She believes that there's nothing wrong with dating someone you work with (hinting Esposito). Also, since Lanie works in the morgue, she has to stay with several stored corpses which she does not seem to mind. However, she later notes during a group date with Jenny, Ryan and Esposito that since she's around the dead at work, she wants a live one at home, referring to Espo who is sometimes already fast asleep when she comes home to him. During one conversation with Beckett, she also seems to have put more thought into the deceased she looks after, saying that the people in their containers have had once dreams when they were living that they could no longer fulfill, so they should make the most out of their decisions while they're still alive.

Gender: Male Status: Alive Occupation: New York City Medical Examiner Other family: Twin - brother Edgar Perlmutter is shown to have more than a few quirks, such as eating his lunch on the autopsy tables - reasoning that the disinfectants used in the morgue are so powerful that the morgue is "the cleanest room in the city" - and always has a sarcastic remark. His diagnostic skills, however, are on a par with Lanie Parish's, and they seem to share a mutual respect, if not a lot of screen-time. Perlmutter frequently makes Richard Castle the butt of his jokes or snide comments, a banter playfully returned by the writer.
