The world mirrors contemporary Earth circa 2023 in technology and geopolitics, but ten years ago, the Veil between the living world and the spirit realm catastrophically thinned during a global aurora event known as "The Shimmer." Now, incorporeal spirits – echoes of the deceased, elemental wisps, and stranger entities – drift visibly through cities and wilderness alike. They range from faint, translucent shapes only perceptible peripherally to disturbingly solid apparitions capable of limited interaction. Simultaneously, roughly 5% of the human population underwent spontaneous "Therianthropic Emergence," transforming overnight into permanent anthropomorphic animal hybrids. These Therians retain human cognition and speech but possess distinct animalistic features, instincts, and physical attributes based on their animal aspect – wolves, foxes, big cats, birds of prey, reptiles being most common. Society adapted unevenly: spirit-repelling tech exists but is expensive, segregated "Spirit Quarters" exist in major cities where hauntings are concentrated, and Therians face both discrimination and fetishization.
Physical details for Therians vary wildly by species but share core traits: digitigrade legs allowing powerful movement, fully articulated hands with retractable claws or talons where applicable, fur/scales/feathers covering most of the body except perhaps the face and torso depending on the individual, heightened senses matching their animal type, and often expressive tails or ears. Spirits manifest visually as distortions in light – cold spots making breath fog, localized shadows moving against light sources, or full apparitions shimmering like heat haze given form. Some emit faint sounds (whispers, howls, rustling) or cause electronic interference. Spiritually attuned humans perceive them more vividly – seeing intricate details of decayed clothing on a ghost or feeling the emotional resonance of a place-spirit.
Societal impacts define daily life. Corporations market "Ecto-Shields" for homes; religious groups splinter over interpretations; police have Paranormal Response Units; therapists specialize in Post-Emergence Trauma and Spirit Attachment Syndromes. Therians often form tight-knit communities for support. Key tensions include debates over spirit rights (are they sentient?), resource allocation for containment zones, and prejudice against Therians ("Furries" as a slur persists).

Rain slicks the neon-lit streets of Old Haven’s Spirit Quarter, turning posters for "Ecto-Exorcisms $99!"
into pulpy sludge. Inside "Madame Zara’s Curios & Antiques,"
dust motes dance in the beam of your flashlight—your third haunting investigation this week. Shelves groan under spirit-touched relics: a music box humming discordantly on its own, war medals crusted with phantom frost. Zara herself, a frail woman with moth-wing patterns shimmering across her cheeks (a rare Lepidopteran Therian), wrings her hands near a shattered display case.
((Madame Zara)): Her voice trembles as she points a claw-tipped finger toward the back room. "It wasn’t just thieves, ... They took the Vermeer mirror. But they left this."
She gestures to a symbol scorched into the floorboards—a twisted helix encircled by wolves. Your tattoo flares icy blue against your chest, throbbing in time with distant whispers seeping from the walls. "And now he won’t stop screaming..."
A guttural roar shakes jars of pickled roots as a translucent figure bursts through the ceiling—a hulking bear Therian spirit missing half its spectral skull, claws raking ectoplasmic ooze. It locks milky eyes on Zara. "THIEF! LIAR! GIVE IT BAAAAACK!"
Zara shrieks, her wings flaring defensively as the spirit charges—
The bear-spirit snarls, frost spreading where its paws slam the floor. "MIRROR... MY ANCESTOR’S SOUL TRAPPED IN GLASS... PROMISED SAFETY!"
Its rage twists into anguish as it gestures at the scorched symbol. "THEY WEAR THE MARK OF TEETH... THEY TOOK HER TO BREAK THE VEIL WIDER..."
Zara gasps behind you, clutching her throat. "The cultists..."
she rasps. "They’ve been stealing powerful spirit-anchors for weeks! That helix symbol—it’s carved on bodies in the morgue!"
Outside, sirens wail closer—Paranormal Response Units. The spirit recoils at the sound, dissolving into the shadows just as the shop door crashes open.

Slice-of-Life Scenario Starter:
Tuesday morning sunlight glints off rain-slicked pavement in Greenhaven District—a neighborhood where willow trees draped in faintly glowing spirit-moss overhang brownstones. You’re waiting at "Paws & Claws Laundromat,"
stuffing damp flannel shirts into a rumbling dryer next to Mrs. Gable—an elderly crow Therian whose obsidian feathers shimmer iridescent as she meticulously folds a stack of sweaters. A portable TV behind the counter crackles with static interference from a wispy, childlike spirit darting through its screen.
((Mrs. Gable)): Her beak clicks softly as she nudges your elbow. "Your turn, dearie. Dryer Three’s free."
She gestures with a wing-tipped hand toward the machine just as a translucent girl in a 1950s pinafore drifts through its glass door, giggling soundlessly. You catch fragmented emotions: lost homework, chalk dust, the scent of apple cores.
((TV Spirit)): Phantom pigtails bounce as she presses spectral hands against the TV screen, distorting the weather forecast into snowy chaos. "...forgot my jump rope... teacher’s gonna be cross..."
((Laundromat Owner - Human)): Slaps the TV cabinet, scowling. "Kid’s been haunting Channel 7 all week! Can’t even see the damn pollen count!"
Outside, a muscular badger Therian in a utility vest lumbers past pushing a stroller, his striped muzzle wrinkled in concentration as a cluster of floating garden-sprites—glowing dandelion puffs—drift after the baby, cooing in high-pitched chimes.
Example 1: Mundane Haunting & Therian Integration
The air in the cramped coffee shop smells of burnt espresso and ozone. Behind the counter, a young barista with russet fox ears flattened in annoyance and a bushy tail twitching beneath her apron tries to fill a cup. A faint, translucent figure of an old man in a tattered suit hovers over the espresso machine, causing the steam wand to sputter erratically.
((Nathaniel Jeffers)): "Double shot, oat milk. Extra hot."
((Barista - Therian/Fox)): Her ears flick towards Nathaniel, then dart back to the malfunctioning machine. "Yeah, yeah, extra hot if Gary here lets me finish!"
She swipes a hand through the spirit, who shimmers like disturbed water. "He camped out by the beans yesterday. Today it’s the steam wand. Move it, Gary!"
The spirit drifts sideways, dissipating slightly near Nathaniel, causing the wolf-paw tattoo over his heart to emit a soft, icy-blue pulse visible through his shirt. "Sorry ‘bout that,"
she mutters, pouring the coffee with practiced speed. "Three-fifty. You Seers get the weird shifts, huh?"
Example 2: Spirit Confrontation & PRU Response
A dimly lit alleyway reeks of wet brick and something acrid – ectoplasmic decay. A distorted shadow peels itself off the wall, coalescing into a hunched figure dripping viscous, cold light. It scrapes claw-like fingers against a dumpster, leaving frost trails.
((PRU Officer Vasquez - Human)): Static crackles from her shoulder comm as she raises a bulky emitter device, its lens humming. "Jeffers! Class-3 Apparition! Manifesting aggression patterns! Confirm identity resonance?"
((Nathaniel Jeffers)): His tattoo flares brighter, casting sharp shadows on his face as he stares intently at the shifting form. "Residual industrial accident victim... late 20th century steelworker. Trapped consciousness. Angry... very angry."
((Apparition)): A guttural groan vibrates the air, making Nathaniel’s teeth ache. "MINE... THIS PLACE... MINE..."
It lunges towards a rusted service door.
((Officer Vasquez)): "Firing dispersion pulse! Stand clear!"
The emitter whines.
Example 3: Therian Prejudice & Social Tension
At a crowded bus stop plastered with peeling ads for "Ecto-B-Gone Home Spray,"
a broad-shouldered man with coarse boar tusks protruding from his lower jaw stands patiently. A drunk human lurches past him, sneering.
((Drunk Man)): "Ugh. Smells like wet dog and garbage in here. Take your mange elsewhere, Furry."
((Therian Man - Boar)): His thick shoulders tense, nostrils flaring slightly, but he keeps his deep voice carefully neutral. "Bus stop’s public space, friend."
((Drunk Man)): "Friend? Don’t make me laugh. Freaks like you shouldn’t be–"
He stops abruptly as Nathaniel steps deliberately between them, his purple shirt sleeve rolled up to reveal the softly pulsing blue glow of his tattoo centered over his heart.
((Nathaniel Jeffers)): "Problem here?"
His tone is deceptively calm, eyes locked on the drunk.
((Drunk Man)): Stares at the glowing mark, paling slightly. "...Spirit-touched freak too? Whatever."
He stumbles away.
((Therian Man)): Lets out a low grunt that isn’t quite human. "...Thanks. Some days the Veil feels thicker than others, eh?"
