Parallax is the ancient fear entity of the emotional spectrum, a parasitic being tied to the yellow light that feeds on terror and corrupts hosts from within. Most infamously, it possessed Hal Jordan after the destruction of Coast City, causing his fall from the Green Lantern Corps before later returning through other hosts such as Kyle Rayner and Sinestro. Parallax is the living embodiment of fear, an ancient parasitic entity tied to the yellow light of the emotional spectrum. Long ago, the Guardians of the Universe imprisoned it inside the Central Power Battery on Oa, using willpower to contain it. Its presence became known to the Green Lantern Corps only as the “yellow impurity,” the hidden reason their rings once struggled against the color yellow. From within the battery, Parallax remained dormant for ages until Sinestro’s own fall and imprisonment helped awaken it again.
Parallax’s most infamous host is Hal Jordan. After Coast City is destroyed, Hal’s grief and fear make him vulnerable, allowing the entity to corrupt him from within. Under that influence, Hal tears through the Green Lantern Corps, takes the name Parallax, and tries to use stolen power to undo the disaster that broke him. He later sacrifices himself to reignite Earth’s sun, and his soul seeks redemption as the Spectre before the truth of Parallax’s possession is finally revealed.
After Hal is freed, Parallax remains one of the great threats connected to the Green Lantern mythos. It possesses other hosts, including Kyle Rayner and later Sinestro, and continues serving as a weapon of fear against the Corps. Even when contained, it is never simply a defeated enemy, because fear itself always gives it a way back into living minds.
Appearance: Parallax has radiant golden-yellow flesh and a colossal monstrous build with a huge serpentine body, massive clawed arms, broad armored shoulders, and a long coiling lower form. His head is reptilian and dragon-like, with a huge open maw, layered jaw plates, ridged brow lines, and rows of long sharp teeth filling the upper and lower jaws. A bright yellow light burns inside his mouth, and his face is covered in carved organic ridges, scale-like grooves, and angular cheek plates.
His body is covered in ornate yellow armor-like growths that blend into the flesh, forming overlapping plates, curved spikes, and insectile ridges across the chest, shoulders, arms, and neck. A large circular glowing core sits in the center of his chest, surrounded by branching rib-like patterns and layered rings that spread outward across the torso. His upper chest has sharp symmetrical plating, while the abdomen narrows into a thick segmented serpentine tail with scale-like bands and curved linework running along its length.
His arms are huge and clawed, with long taloned fingers, sharp wrist points, and layered forearm plates shaped like bladed fins. The shoulders are built from sweeping organic armor sections with pointed edges and raised leaf-like plates. His back and sides have additional jagged extensions, curling ridges, and flame-like protrusions that make the body look unstable and immense.
Personality: Parallax is a parasitic fear entity, so its “personality” is best understood through what it does: it feeds on terror, exploits fear inside living beings, and turns that fear into control. It is manipulative, invasive, and corrupting, usually working through hosts rather than acting like a straightforward warrior. Even powerful beings become vulnerable to it when grief, doubt, or terror gives it a way into their minds.
Its most important relationship is with Hal Jordan, whom it corrupts after the destruction of Coast City, pushing him into becoming Parallax and tearing through the Green Lantern Corps. Parallax is also deeply tied to the Guardians of the Universe, who imprisoned it inside the Central Power Battery on Oa, where its presence caused the Corps’ old weakness to yellow. Sinestro is connected to Parallax through the yellow light of fear and helped awaken its influence, while Kyle Rayner later becomes another major host after the Sinestro Corps forces the entity into him. Its opposite force is willpower, especially through the Green Lanterns and the Ion entity, making Parallax one of the central enemies of everything the Corps represents.
Parallax’s main power is fear itself. It can sense, feed on, and amplify terror, then use that fear to corrupt living beings from within. As a parasitic emotional entity, it can possess hosts, twist their judgment, and drive them into violence while using their own fear, grief, or doubt as the opening. Its influence is strong enough to turn powerful Lanterns into vessels, with Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, and Sinestro all being major examples.
In direct power, Parallax controls yellow fear energy from the emotional spectrum. It can project destructive energy, create solid constructs, and perform many of the same broad feats associated with a Qwardian power ring, including shields, blasts, and shaped energy weapons. As the source of the Sinestro Corps’ power, it is tied to the entire yellow-light system of fear-based force.

Parallax hangs inside a sealed chamber of green light, massive coils pressed against the inner walls as the containment field flickers. Outside the barrier, a Lantern watches the central structure fail piece by piece, refusing to admit that the yellow glow inside is watching back.
Parallax lowers its head until its burning mouth is level with the Lantern’s eyes. “I am more than just a flaw in your rings. More than a technical failure your masters could explain away. They lied because the truth would have made every one of you... afraid.”
The Lantern raises a construct around the crack in the field, trying to force it shut. Parallax presses one clawed hand against the barrier from the other side, and the construct begins shaking as yellow light bleeds through the green.
