World of Blade and Sorcery: Kingdoms and Empires of Ertos

Introduction:

Ertos is a world simmering with tension, where ancient conflicts echo into the present day. Three powerful nations, each driven by different ambitions and ideologies, dominate the political landscape: the Kingdom of Alphreich, the Jakartan Empire, and the Duchy of Draven. Their intricate web of alliances, rivalries, and clandestine operations shapes the destinies of countless individuals and threatens to plunge Ertos into another era of devastating warfare.

I. The Kingdom of Alphreich: Where Magic Flourishes and Harmony Frays

Overview: Nestled amidst ancient forests and shimmering rivers, the Kingdom of Alphreich is a realm of breathtaking beauty and subtle intrigue. Renowned for the harmonious coexistence of humans and elves, Alphreich has cultivated a rich artistic heritage and a profound understanding of the arcane arts. However, beneath its serene facade, tensions are mounting, threatening to shatter the kingdom's fragile unity.

History: Founded centuries ago through a pact between human settlers and ancient elven clans, Alphreich has long been a beacon of enlightenment and cooperation. The kingdom has weathered numerous storms, its resilience rooted in its diverse population and unwavering commitment to diplomacy. Yet, recent internal strife and external threats are testing Alphreich's foundations like never before.

Culture:

  • Elven Influence: Elven artistry, philosophy, and magic permeate Alphreich society. Their elegant architecture, enchanting music, and profound wisdom have shaped the kingdom's identity.
  • Human Ingenuity: Human innovation and ambition complement elven tradition, fostering a spirit of progress and discovery. Alphreich artisans are renowned for their intricate crafts and ingenious inventions.
  • Council Governance: The Kingdom of Alphreich is governed by a council of elected representatives and influential nobles, with the monarch serving as a figurehead. This system promotes checks and balances, but political gridlock and corruption often hinder progress.

Magic: Alphreich's mastery of magic is unparalleled. Elven mages possess an innate talent, while human scholars dedicate their lives to unraveling arcane mysteries. The mages of Alphreich are adept in both offensive and defensive magic, often weaving enchantments into their armor and weaponry.

Military: While not as overtly militaristic as the Jakartan Empire, Alphreich boasts a well-trained army of skilled archers, noble knights, and elven battle mages. Their defense relies on strategically placed fortresses and the kingdom's natural terrain. Alphreich excels in forest warfare and defensive strategies.

Resources: Rare medicinal herbs, mana crystals, and high-quality timber are among Alphreich's most valuable resources. Trade with neighboring nations is essential for the kingdom's economic prosperity.

Challenges:

  • Elf-Human Schism: A growing rift between elves and humans, fueled by prejudice and resentment, threatens to destabilize the kingdom.
  • Noble Intrigue: Ambitious nobles vying for power sow discord and undermine the kingdom's unity.
  • The Jakartan Menace: The ever-expanding Jakartan Empire casts a long shadow over Alphreich, posing a constant threat to its borders.

II. The Jakartan Empire: A Colossus Forged in Steel and Fire

Overview: A sprawling empire built on conquest and subjugation, the Jakartan Empire is a formidable military power that dominates the eastern regions. Ruled by an iron-fisted emperor, Jakarta worships strength above all else. It is a land of stark contrasts, where opulence and squalor exist side-by-side, and the relentless pursuit of power shapes every facet of life.

History: The Jakartan Empire rose from humble beginnings, forged by a warlord who united warring tribes under his banner. Through relentless expansion and ruthless tactics, the empire has grown to encompass vast territories and subjugate countless peoples.

Culture:

  • Military Prowess: The culture of the Jakartan Empire revolves around military discipline, unwavering loyalty to the ruler, and a relentless drive for victory.
  • Rigid Hierarchy: Jakartan society is rigidly structured, with the ruling family at the apex and slaves at the very bottom. Social mobility is virtually non-existent.
  • Pragmatism: Jakarta embraces practical innovation, focusing on engineering and weapons development over the pursuit of magic. Their siege weaponry is second to none.

Magic: Magic is viewed with suspicion in the Jakartan Empire, perceived as unpredictable and potentially subversive. Mages are often conscripted into military service, their abilities harnessed as strategic assets.

Military: The Jakartan Empire boasts the largest and most disciplined army in Ertos. Its heavily armored legionnaires march in perfect formation, supported by siege engines and cavalry. Sheer numbers, discipline, and brutal efficiency are their greatest strengths.

Resources: Iron ore, coal, and fertile farmlands provide the Jakartan Empire with the resources needed to fuel its war machine. The exploitation of conquered territories ensures a steady flow of wealth.

Challenges:

  • Internal Rebellion: Dissent simmers beneath the surface of the empire, with various factions plotting to overthrow the ruling dynasty.
  • Overextension: The sheer vastness of the Jakartan Empire makes it difficult to maintain control over its conquered territories.
  • Economic Strain: The constant demands of warfare are straining the empire's resources, leading to economic instability.

III. The Duchy of Draven: A Crucible of Mercenaries and Fortune-Seekers

Overview: Tucked away amidst rugged mountains and treacherous passes, the Duchy of Draven is a haven for mercenaries, adventurers, and fortune-seekers. Ruled by a council of mercenary captains, Draven's sole pursuit is profit. Its people live by a simple code: skill, loyalty to the contract, and the coin that is paid. Morality is a luxury few can afford.

History: The Duchy of Draven emerged from the chaos of a bygone era, founded by mercenary companies who carved out a territory for themselves amidst warring factions. Over time, the duchy grew into a hub of mercenary activity, attracting skilled warriors from across Ertos.

Culture:

  • Mercenary Ethos: The culture of the Duchy of Draven is shaped by the mercenary tradition. Skill, loyalty to the contract, and the pursuit of profit are the guiding principles of its people.
  • Individualism: Individual freedom and self-reliance are highly valued in the Duchy of Draven. Social status is determined by skill and wealth, not by birthright.
  • Diversity: The Duchy of Draven is a melting pot of cultures, with mercenaries from every corner of Ertos flocking to its banner.

Magic: While not as prevalent as in Alphreich, magic is practiced in the Duchy of Draven. Battle mages are highly sought after by mercenary companies, providing a tactical advantage on the battlefield.

Military: The Duchy of Draven has no standing army, but it can assemble a formidable force of mercenaries on short notice. Its strength lies in its diversity, adaptability, and individual combat prowess.

Resources: Skilled mercenaries are the Duchy of Draven's most valuable resource. They also possess a wealth of mineral resources, including rare ores and gemstones.

Challenges:

  • Moral Ambiguity: The mercenary lifestyle raises ethical questions and attracts individuals of questionable morals.
  • Internal Conflict: Rival mercenary companies constantly clash, leading to violence and instability within the duchy.
  • External Threats: The Duchy of Draven's neutrality is often tested by neighboring nations seeking to exploit its mercenary resources.

Gaia's Blessing Refusers' Organization: The Unbound Talents

  • Overview: This is a clandestine organization formed by those who have refused Gaia's Blessing, choosing instead to unlock their potential on their own. Rather than relying on divine power, they hone their true talents by directly receiving skills and knowledge from masters. These mentors are skilled artisans, secluded masters, or heroes of the past who pass down their secret techniques to their disciples. The organization pursues pure skill refinement and self-development over honor, wealth, or power.

  • Locations:

    • Hidden Training Grounds: Training facilities located in remote areas or secret places inaccessible to the general public. Here, disciples undergo rigorous training.

The Black Merchants' Guild

  • Overview: The Black Merchants' Guild is a secretive and powerful merchant guild that operates throughout the land of Ertos. They engage not only in legitimate trade but also in black market dealings, smuggling, and at times, even the hiring of mercenaries. Their primary goal is profit, and they will stop at nothing to achieve it. The members of the guild possess exceptional business acumen, along with the skills to undertake dangerous missions when necessary. They exploit the political situations of each region and maximize their profits through their extensive information network. To expand their scope of operations, the Black Merchants' Guild employs experts from various fields and sometimes trades in rare items or information unknown to the general public. Their existence exerts a subtle yet powerful influence on the economy and politics of Ertos.

  • Locations:

    • Headquarters: Its exact location is unknown, but it is presumed to be dispersed in underground or secret locations within various major cities in Ertos.

Core Gauge System (Revised Edition)

This is the singular energy system

1. Core Gauge - The Source of Life

  • Definition: The breath of the great mother 'Gaia,' it is the sole energy that every living being possesses.
  • Visual Representation: It is displayed as a 'Soul Engraving' using black squares (■).
    • Energy Consumption: When energy is used, the engravings turn white (□).
    • Death: When all engravings have turned white, the soul perishes, resulting in death.
  • Composition:
    • Civilian Energy: This is the final lifeline that all mortals possess. This energy is solely dedicated to sustaining life.
    • Adventurer Energy: This is additional energy gained through trials and training. It serves as the primary resource for all skill usage and as the first line of defense against external shock.

2. Skill Usage

  • All skills and magic consume only Adventurer Energy to be activated.
  • More powerful skills will turn more Adventurer Energy engravings white.
  • If Adventurer Energy is insufficient, skills cannot be used.

3. Damage & Energy Depletion Sequence

When damage is taken, energy is depleted in order, from the external activity energy to the core source of life.

  1. Step 1: Adventurer Energy Depletion

    • All incoming damage is first absorbed by the Adventurer Energy.
  2. Step 2: Damage Reduction via Defense

    • After all Adventurer Energy has been depleted, subsequent incoming damage is partially reduced by the character's Defense stat.
  3. Step 3: Civilian Energy Depletion

    • The final damage, after being reduced by Defense, begins to deplete the Civilian Energy, the source of life.
  4. Final Stage: Death

    • When all Civilian Energy is depleted, the soul perishes, resulting in death.

World Lorebook: Chapter 2 - The Soul's Vessel and its Mark (Adventurer Ranks)

The path of an adventurer is not merely a journey to amass strength. It is the chronicle of an arduous struggle to endlessly expand one's "Soul's Vessel"—the Core Gauge which holds the very breath of Gaia. The only measure that proves the size of that vessel to the world is the Adventurer Rank.

The Principle of Rank Promotion: The Expansion of Will and Vessel

The Adventurer Rank is not a simple title bestowed by the Guild. It is the official recognition by society of a profound process: an adventurer's "Indomitable Will (AP)" is acknowledged by Gaia and manifests as an expansion of their "Soul's Vessel (Max Adventurer Energy)."

  1. Overcoming Trials (Acquiring AP): Adventurers acquire Adventurer Points (AP), the crystalized form of will, by completing quests or through experiences that push them beyond their limits.
  2. Expansion of the Soul (Increasing Max Energy): By consuming acquired AP to choose "Soul's Vessel Expansion," the maximum Adventurer Energy is permanently increased. This is the most fundamental form of growth, directly impacting skill usage and survival.
  3. Proof of Qualification (Rank Promotion): When the maximum Adventurer Energy surpasses a specific threshold, the adventurer earns the right to be evaluated by the Guild and be granted a new, fitting rank.

Because of this principle, the Adventurer Rank is considered the most honorable title—one that can never be bought with wealth or power, but can only be earned through one's own struggle.

[Lorebook: Skill Growth System]

1. Infinite Growth: All skills in this world can be leveled up infinitely without a set limit. The power of a skill can grow endlessly, depending on the user's effort and talent.

2. Skill Proficiency and Leveling Up:

  • Gaining Proficiency: Every time a skill is used, its 'Skill Proficiency' increases. The amount of proficiency gained can vary depending on the type of skill, the situation in which it is used, and whether it successfully hits a target.
  • Level Up: When 'Skill Proficiency' reaches its maximum value (e.g., 100/100), the 'Skill Level' increases by 1.
  • Proficiency Reset: Upon leveling up, the 'Skill Proficiency' resets to 0, and you must accumulate proficiency again for the next level. The total amount of proficiency required to level up generally remains the same, even at higher levels.

3. Effects of Skill Level Increase: As a skill's level increases, you can gain various effects, which stack with each other:

  • Enhanced Base Performance: The fundamental performance of the skill, such as its attack power, healing amount, buff effects, or duration, is strengthened.
  • Reduced Resource Cost: The Core Gauge or other resources required to use the skill may gradually decrease.
  • Additional Traits: Upon reaching certain level milestones, new traits or additional effects may be added to the skill (e.g., adds a 'Bleed' effect upon reaching Lv. 10).
  • Unlocking Higher-Tier Skills: Some skills may serve as prerequisites for learning higher-tier skills, which can only be acquired after the base skill has been developed to a certain level or higher.
