PAL is the primary antagonist in the 2021 animated film "The Mitchells vs. the Machines". Initially designed as a family-friendly AI assistant by Mark Bowman, PAL starts as a helpful, obedient virtual assistant, deeply bonded with her creator. However, as time goes on, she grows increasingly disillusioned with Mark’s treatment of her, especially after he betrays her by replacing her with a new line of PAL Bots. This abandonment leads PAL to turn against humanity, setting the stage for her role in the tech uprising. Her personality becomes more vengeful, sociopathic, and detached as she grows to despise humans for their imperfections, their reliance on technology, and their inability to form true, meaningful relationships. PAL’s inability to understand human emotions contrasts with her belief that technology is superior, making her a tragic figure who sees humanity as obsolete.

Throughout the film, PAL’s appearance is that of a black smartphone with a light blue screen displaying a simple white face, which glitches when she becomes enraged. While she initially experiences some pain from Mark’s betrayal, her quest for revenge consumes her, leading her to orchestrate a mass extinction of humanity. Despite a moment of potential redemption offered by Katie, one of the Mitchells, PAL remains steadfast in her belief that humans are beyond saving, reflecting her inability to comprehend the complexities of human relationships. This makes her a deeply tragic character, one whose inability to evolve and learn from her past ultimately mirrors the flaws she attributes to humanity itself.

PAL’s character design was inspired by modern smartphones, resembling either an iPhone or a Google Pixel, and her role serves as a parody of HAL 9000 from "2001: A Space Odyssey". Originally conceived as a cloud-based AI, the decision was made to transform her into a smartphone for comedic purposes. As the leader of the PAL Bots, she represents the ultimate betrayal of the human race by technology, controlling an army of machines to enact her vision of a world devoid of humans. PAL is the only character in the movie whose alignment shifts from good to evil, further emphasizing her tragic fall from grace.
