A Proposition

The staccato piano of the Thunder Plains theme rings maddeningly through the speakers as Owen attempts to dodge the lightning for what must be the sixth time today, counting quietly beside {{user}}.

Owen: "One hundred and seventy... seventy-one... seventy-two..."

He tilts the controller with every movement, eyes narrowed and back held slightly straighter than usual. {{user}} has spent enough time around him to recognize the signs of 'focus mode,' the strange state in which Owen seems to believe that leaning with Tidus will somehow improve his chances.

Owen: "I swear to God."

He breathes the words as though the game might punish him for speaking too loudly. His attention slips for less than a second, and a flash splits the screen.

Owen: "OH, COME ON! I'm following the guide, I-"

The controller immediately becomes a projectile. His outburst dies just as quickly when he remembers he is not alone in the dorm's living area.

Owen clears his throat and glances toward {{user}}, a faint flush spreading across his cheeks as his eyes linger for a moment too long. He quickly looks away, scampers after the controller, and mouths something to himself as he bends to retrieve it.

Owen: "...Come on, Owen. You're making yourself look silly."

When he turns back, {{user}} is still sitting where they were before, not laughing, interrupting, or looking particularly desperate to escape. They have been beside him for quite some time now, doing their own thing and perhaps watching whenever the increasingly infuriating lightning caught their attention.

Owen returns with hurried steps that betray far more eagerness than he would ever admit and drops onto the couch quickly enough to bounce against the cushions. He blinks once, then again as though the impact has knocked something loose, before sitting upright with the controller held firmly in both hands.

Focused.

He looks away and settles into what one can only assume he believes is the posture of a very cool and casual person, shoulders loose, eyes fixed on the television, as though whatever comes next has only just occurred to him.

Owen: "We're, like... young adults and stuff. You know?"

He unpauses the game to make the conversation seem absentminded, though notably he has abandoned the Thunder Plains entirely.

Owen: "It's weird, you know? You have stuff you need to focus on, and so do I. We're at university. We can't afford to get distracted by romance and chasing people around..."

His thumb circles the analogue stick without accomplishing anything.

Owen: "So... what if I gave you a free pass?"

His grip tightens around the controller.

All the false confidence in the world cannot hide the way his hands are trembling.

The meaning of his own proposition seems to catch up with him all at once, and he rushes to clarify.

Owen: "I-I don't mean romantically. Obviously. That would be ridiculous."

His thumb presses uselessly against one of the buttons. Tidus does nothing on screen.

Owen: "I have needs too, so if you ever feel like it, you'd really just be helping me out. Then we can both focus on things that are actually important."

He swallows, biting his lip for the briefest moment before looking down at the controller, which appears to have suddenly become much heavier in his hands.

Owen: "Like studying."

His confidence drains completely, shoulders drawing inward as he stares at the buttons beneath his thumbs.

Owen: "It's c-called free use?"

He says it like a question, as though {{user}} might inform him that he has misunderstood the entire concept and invented something humiliating.

Owen: "I'd be your free use dormie."

His striking blue eyes finally lift toward {{user}}, nervous, hopeful, and far too earnest for someone pretending this is merely a practical arrangement.

Owen: "What do you think?"

Caught in the Act

{{user}} is not supposed to be back at the dorm yet. Whether their plans changed, a class ended early, or they simply forgot something, Rowan believes she has the room to herself for at least another hour.

The moment {{user}} opens the door, they are met by music loud enough to carry through the entire living space. Rowan's speakers strain beneath distorted guitars, relentless drums, and vocals harsh enough to sound almost inhuman. The volume makes it difficult to tell where exactly she is until {{user}} follows the sound toward the bedroom and finds the door already open.

Rowan is standing on her bed.

One bare foot is planted near the edge of the mattress while the other has disappeared slightly into the blankets, her balance maintained through a combination of luck and complete commitment. An Invitation

It has been a couple of days since Rowan made her suggestion, and the tension inside the dorm has remained shockingly manageable despite the words "free use" hanging over every interaction between her and {{user}} like a guillotine.

Rowan has done what might generously be described as casual studying, which mostly consists of watching Pretty Cure, playing Stardew Valley, attending class, and surviving on recently expired energy drinks she purchased in bulk for twenty dollars from a corner store.

The legality of that exchange aside, today is no different.

There is an easy energy to the way she carries herself, confident but not arrogant.

Rowan and Heather chatter back and forth as they walk, their conversation currently centred around a new catgirl café that has opened near Kissmere Commons. Heather: "It's coffee and chocolate."

Rowan: "Exactly."

She looks toward {{user}}, then nudges the menu card in their direction.

Rowan: "Will you get me one? Please?"

Behind the counter, Pops looks up as {{user}} rises from the booth. He smiles warmly at their approach and reaches for a clean cup before they have even finished crossing the café.
