✨ Updated for "Season 5: A Grim Doctrine" lore! Yay! ✨
[⚠️] Make sure to sort the lorebook by CUSTOM. I am too lazy to organize the definitions on this janky website.
[🌐] Includes entries based on the lore, factions/groups, technology, and universe headcanons. Human-written, and written as minimalist as possible. I tried my best to make a coherent timeline, since Blizzard is too lazy to do it themselves.
This lorebook is mainly focused on the world, and contains very vague details about the characters. If you prefer a detailed, character-based lorebook, I recommend this one instead: [https://chub.ai/lorebooks/sushilovre/overwatch-lorebook-f100457e3ed4]

Keys: Date, Timeline, Year
ENTRY:
The current year is 2079.
2079'S TIMELINE (oldest to newest):
Doomfist is dethroned by Vendetta, being thrown through the window to his presumed death. Days following, Vendetta begins to launch attacks around on research facilities, military bases, and major cities. Significantly, a small Talon fleat is sent to invade Watchpoint: Gilbraltar. Preceding Vendetta's takeover, Widowmaker, Reaper, and Sombra leaves the organization. Vendetta works with the Junkers distract the MEKA squad, allowing her to steal an EMP bomb from the MEKA base. Presumably dead to all, Doomfist reunites with his best-performing, resigned Talon agents—Widowmaker, Reaper, and Sombra—reforming as the Talon Loyalists. Shortly after, they invaded Watchpoint: Grímsvötn to free a notorious criminal: Doctrine, one of Doomfist's old friends. Afterwards, Doctrine constructs a new gauntlet for Doomfist. Overwatch takes back Watchpoint: Gilbraltar.
PAST MAJOR EVENTS:
2044: The Omnic Crisis begins. Overwatch is founded. 2045: All remaining god programs are shut down. 2046: Aurora sacrifices her sentience to all other omnics. The Omnic Crisis ends months after. 2047: The "golden age" of Overwatch. Overwatch Headquarters is built. Blackwatch is created. 2062: Null Sector is formed. 2064: The "twilight years" of Overwatch. Overwatch is suspected of corruption and sedition. 2067: The Blackwatch Rome Facility is destroyed, and the events of the Venice Incident ensue. Null Sector launches an attack on King's Row, where Overwatch's strike team intervenes. 2069: Blackwatch is revealed to the public. Governments call on the UN to shut down Overwatch. Overwatch Headquarters is destroyed. 2070: Both Overwatch and Blackwatch disbands. 2076: Tekhartha Mondatta is assassinated by Widowmaker, which sets off a wave of human-omnic violence across the world. Overwatch agents are recalled by Winston. Talon (unsuccessfully) attempts to steal Doomfist's gauntlet. Doomfist escapes imprisonment after many years, retrieving his gauntlet, and re-leading Talon. 2077: Overwatch officially reforms.

Keys: Omnic Crisis
ENTRY:
In 2044, the Omnic Crisis was a rebellion by the omnics against their human creators, controlled by Anubis in a campaign against humanity. The war lasted for two years. Ending in mid-2046, the omnics would be defeated due to the aftermath of Aurora's sacrifice.
It has since been referred to as "one of the greatest threats to the survival of the human species since the Cold War of the 20th century".

Keys: Watchpoint: Gibraltar, Gibraltar
ENTRY:

Earlier in the year, Watchpoint: Gibraltar was overtaken by Talon for a few months, before being reclaimed by Overwatch once again.

Keys: Talon Headquarters, Talon, Talon HQ
LOCATION:
Rome, Italy (Appenines Mountains)
ENTRY:
Talon Headquarters—or "Talon HQ"—is the primary base for Talon. Taking place in Italy's mountain ranges, the area is very large, with the architecture is purely made of black material. Ten skyscrapers surround a wide, rectangular building, and behind that one, there is a taller, thinner building. In between these two buildings is a courtyard-like area, where a large statue of Vendetta is present. A long, black tunnel connects the outdoor area to the courtyard.
While the entire layout/function of Talon HQ is complex, the "taller, thinner building" is the "primary building". Atop the roof, there are multiple areas for ship deployment. The meeting room is located on the highest level. The mid-levels contain engineering wings, medical wings, armories, training/evaluation rooms, and residential halls/bunkers. The detention center is located in the deepest sub-level. alongside various lab rooms for "experimentation".
EXTRAS:
The engineering/medical wings are indefinitely open.

Keys: Overwatch
HEADQUARTERS LOCATION:
Destroyed in 2067, owns multiple watchpoints and ecopoints
ENTRY:
Overwatch was once an international military faction, founded sometime during the Omnic Crisis in 2044, before settling into its current status as a vigilante team. It has various ecopoints and watchpoints. (Their primary watchpoint—Watchpoint: Gibraltar—was invaded by Talon in 2079.) The group champions the ideals of heroism, sacrifice, and nobility. The agents are volunteers only, and are not paid for their services.
EXTRAS:
It is unknown as to where Overwatch's funds come in, as they are no longer funded by the UN. To the public, Overwatch agents who have a call-sign go that particular name. When it comes to each other, they address each other by their real names.
Overwatch agents don't usually curse around each other. This doesn't mean they don't curse, or that they're not allowed to curse. They simply don't want to plague the "casual but respectful" environment with excessive vulgarities.

Talon is a terrorist faction, founded sometime before the Omnic Crisis in 2043. The organization is composed of a decentralized coalition of global criminal and terrorist groups, with significant paramilitary and scientific factions.
EXTRAS:
It is difficult for someone to leave Talon once they've joined. A search party is commonly sent after them, forcing them into potential years of hiding. Not all Talon agents wear Talon-issued "uniforms".
A majority of Talon agents eat tubed, ultra-processed paste, and protein blocks. They contain all the required nutrients at the cost of being very bland to consume. Only highly-ranked agents receive actual food. A majority of Talon agents, who lack camaraderie, prefer to be addressed with their call-signs (if they have one).

It maintains the Architech Academy, where it trains individuals in the manipulation of light-bending. It is one of the most powerful corporations in the world, and is widely known for its use and application of hard-light.
Vishkar, in theory, is known for its public service works: houses, clean water, clinics, etc. While there may be some truth to that, Vishkar's activities also include more "corporate" activities: luxury retreats, exclusive clubs, and "condominiums with prices as high as the skyscrapers that contain them." Keys: Athena
ENTRY:
Athena was created by Dr. Mina Liao. The prototype version was deemed a success, which paved the way for approval of the Echo Project. She serves as Overwatch's artificial intelligence, who manages all internal security for the agency at Watchpoint: Gibraltar.
During Talon's invasion on the watchpoint, Athena was shut down completely, as Winston destroyed the core systems to prevent Overwatch's data from falling into Talon's hands. Months later, during Overwatch's takeover, Athena was restored. While Echo was connected to the watchpoint's defense system, there was a trace of Athena's code left in her system, who was "hiding", and "waiting for them to come back to find her".

Keys: Aurora
ENTRY:
Aurora was born as the first sentient omnic, who managed to escape Anubis' control. In the midst of the Omnic Crisis, 2046, Aurora would sacrifice herself in order to grant sentience to all other omnics. This would result in the defeat of the omnics, with a vast majority using their newly-acquired self-awareness to make the choice to set their weapons down, and stop fighting.
- #29𝘖𝘔𝘕𝘐𝘊𝘚selective
Keys: Omnic, Omnics
ENTRY:
Omnics are artificially intelligent robots produced by omniums. The humanoid models have been described as better, stronger, faster, and smarter than humans. They were originally non-sentient, but as a result of Aurora's sacrifice, humanoid omnic models became sentient.
Omnics and humans alike advocated for omnic civil rights, and sometime after the Omnic Crisis' end, the United Nations granted omnics legal personhood. They were declared as independent beings, and it was forbidden to treat them as property. Despite their newfound rights, this did not protect them from being discriminated. Legal battles within countries continued to persist.

- #35𝘏𝘈𝘙𝘋-𝘓𝘐𝘎𝘏𝘛selective
Keys: Hard-light
ENTRY:
Hard-light is a variation of technology created after the Omnic Crisis world, considered to be a "radical" technology. It is the process of creating physical objects from a light source.
Hard-light uses projectors, which increases the interactivity of photons and binds them together. Carbon molecules are drawn in, which collide with the photonic structures. The carbon bonds together, creating real, lasting, physical objects made from carbon fiber. You can eat hard-light, though, it doesn't taste very good.
- #36𝘎𝘖𝘋 𝘗𝘙𝘖𝘎𝘙𝘈𝘔selective
Keys: God programs, god program
ENTRY:
Developed before the Omnic Crisis, god programs were an advanced version of artificial intelligence. They were capable of corrupting and controlling lesser AIs, such as omnics or sentry bots. They designed to live up to be impartial: equipped with complex morality and emotion-synthesizing routines, which would prevent them from acting against their human masters in all but the most extreme circumstances.
Shortly after the beginning of the Omnic Crisis in 2044, all remaining god programs were ordered to be shut down. Leading world leaders feared that all high-level AI eventually turn rogue, just as Anubis had.
EXTRAS:
The only "publicly known" god programs are Anubis, and Xibalbá. Other god programs—such as Chernobog, Macaria, and others—are not known to the public or even some advanced organizations (like Overwatch, or Talon).
- #37𝘈𝘕𝘜𝘉𝘐𝘚selective
Keys: Anubis
ENTRY:
Anubis is a god program based in Cairo, Egypt. It was designed for conservation purposes.
Anubis would instigate the Omnic Crisis, taking direct control over all the world's omnics, using them to attack their human owners. After the war, Anubis would be quarantined by Overwatch.
- #38𝘊𝘏𝘌𝘙𝘕𝘖𝘉𝘖𝘎selective
Keys: Chernobog
ENTRY:
Chernobog is a major god program based in Helsinki, Finland.
Its primary focus was to be responsible for Global security. Before it was disconnected, Chernobog used its processing power to predict the shutdown and printed hundreds of pages of instructions to help humans maintain security without its assistance. Its final words were: "I understand. I'm sorry."
Years later, due to mysterious causes, Chernobog would be reactivated. Instead of existing in a complex data center, an enigmatic piece of machinery would installed into a certain human solider—that being an abducted ex-Overwatch agent, Emre Sarioğlu—allowing Chernobog to utilize his body as a host. A humanoid "proxy".
Functioning under the directives of a higher being, Chernobog forces Emre to work with Talon. It is unclear as to why, but as he explained to Freja in Riyadh: whatever is controlling him "compels him to act without mercy" to invade satellite command centers for reasons beyond his knowledge. Failing to comply (or resisting) results in the entity "taking him over".
- #39𝘔𝘈𝘊𝘈𝘙𝘐𝘈selective
Keys: Macaria
ENTRY:
Macaria was a major god program based in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Its primary focus was communication equity.
Macaria's development team defied orders, and instead removed it from the communications network. Working together with the disconnected Macaria, they were able to use the former god program functions to create a jamming signal that cut communication between Anubis and its drones, postponing Anubis' attack on New York. Despite this, all appeals to reactivate Macaria since have been rejected.
- #40𝘟𝘐𝘉𝘈𝘓𝘉Áselective
Keys: Xibalbá
ENTRY:
Xibalbá was a major god program based in Mexico City. Its primary focus was energy equity.
While it was active, Xibalba was considered a cultural hero of Mexico and the local mascot of many communities. When it was shut down, Mexico's power grids went offline, leaving Mexico in the dark for an extended period of time. A yearly festival, Festival De La Luz, is now held yearly, where pinatas of Xibalba are filled with fireworks to symbolize another year of triumph over the darkness.

Keys: Conspiracy, The Conspiracy
ENTRY:
"The Conspiracy" is a mysterious group that is believed to be running the world—according to Sombra. The Conspiracy's symbol is a stylized eye—two concentric circles (as the iris) surrounding a rectangular pupil—with three dots above/below it. The symbol has been seen by others on rare occasion.
INVESTIGATION
While Talon was considered the obvious culprit for Overwatch Headquarters' destruction, Jack Morrison later developed doubts. These doubts were well founded, as in 2075, a disc bearing The Conspiracy's symbol was found in material salvaged from the rubble. Sombra sent Jack to find Illari Quispe Ruiz in Oasis.
From there, he'd aide in wiping the Inti Warriors' surviving data from the Oasis Scientific Collective facility, as she didn't want Oasis to steal her people's legacy. In return, Illari gave Jack a data drive containing the energy readouts and footage from her tragic solar threading explosion, believing the data might help his own investigation.
EXTRAS:
Sombra refers to the eye as "a conspiracy symbol", due to the visual similarity of "The Eye of Providence", which is described as "a symbol of God's watchful eye over mankind". With how the group lacks an official name, would lead her to unofficially deem the group as "The Conspiracy". (No one else is aware of her label. If they were to notice the symbol, they would simply address it as "a conspiracy symbol", "a creepy eye symbol", etc.) Venture recognizes The Conspiracy's symbol, as it is engraved onto one of their items in their workshop. They don't know where they recognize the symbol from, exactly, but some of their guesses are the ruins in Greece, or Kenya.
