The world was originally inhabited by ancient races - titans, giants and elder elves. They possessed powerful magic and created prosperous civilizations. But over time, wars began between them for territories and resources. As a result, many cities and fortresses of ancient races were destroyed. Titans and giants almost completely exterminated each other, and the surviving elder elves went to other dimensions. After their disappearance, new races began to develop on the wreckage of the old world. Humans founded their kingdoms, goblins and orcs took over mountains and caves, and dwarves built underground cities. These races also often fought each other for resources and lands. Some powerful wizards or heroes became rulers, but their power was short-lived.

All hail the Anime Overlord! Since you’ve claimed your rightful throne, here is a full-blown lore summary of the universe of Overlord, including the war, creatures, the Great Tomb of Nazarick, magic items, and the plot of YGGDRASIL—the MMORPG that started it all.

The World of Overlord: Ultimate Lore Summary

YGGDRASIL: The Origin

YGGDRASIL was a DMMO-RPG (Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) released in the year 2126, famous for its incredible customization. Players could:

  • Create items, skills, races, and guilds.
  • Play as non-human races like demons, vampires, liches, dragons, succubi, and more.
  • Use World Items: 200 brokenly overpowered relics capable of rewriting rules of the game world itself.

Important Facts:

  • YGGDRASIL was nearing its end—servers were shutting down.
  • Players who stayed until the end saw their data deleted—except one.

The Overlord Appears: Ainz Ooal Gown Rises

Suzuki Satoru, a salaryman, played as Momonga, a max-level undead Overlord (Elder Lich) and guildmaster of Ainz Ooal Gown, a powerful guild based in The Great Tomb of Nazarick.

But when the servers shut down… he didn’t log out.

  • The game world had become real.
  • NPCs became sentient.
  • Magic functioned in ways beyond YGGDRASIL’s system.
  • Momonga renamed himself Ainz Ooal Gown, both to honor his guild and to spread fear and respect.

The Great Tomb of Nazarick

An ultra-strong dungeon base, formerly ranked among the top in YGGDRASIL. It includes:

  • 10 Floors with different biomes and guardians.
  • Floor Guardians: Powerful NPCs created by guild members (e.g., Albedo, Shalltear, Cocytus, Demiurge).
  • Massive collections of legendary magic items, scrolls, and World Items.
  • Nazarick's goal: Dominate the new world, ensure Ainz is recognized as supreme, and uncover whether other players are also trapped.

The War and Conflict

After Nazarick appeared in the New World, Ainz quickly realized:

  • This world had magic, but weaker than YGGDRASIL’s tiered system.
  • Its countries were at war—politics, religion, racism, and conquest fueled ongoing conflict.
  • Ainz manipulates kingdoms, destroys armies, and installs fear of Nazarick.

The Great War Moments:

  • Massacre of the Re-Estize Kingdom’s Army: Ainz slaughters hundreds of thousands using a super-tier spell, Fallen Down, and summons the Dark Youngs (horrific black tentacle monsters).
  • Empire’s Submission: The Baharuth Empire becomes Ainz’s puppet.
  • Creation of the Sorcerer Kingdom: Ainz forms his own nation, ruled by the undead.

Magic, Monsters, and Mayhem

Magic is tiered from 1st to 10th tier, with Super-Tier and Wild Magic above them:

  • Ainz can cast 10th-tier and Super-Tier magic.
  • Magic can revive, destroy armies, or bend reality.
  • Magic Items are everywhere: staves, rings, cloaks that grant immense power or unlock abilities.

Common Creatures:

  • Demons & Succubi: Often tied to chaotic factions. Nazarick employs many demon-type NPCs like Demiurge.
  • Undead: Ainz’s specialty. Ranges from skeletons to death knights to terrifying Soul Eaters.
  • Goblins: Appear as minions but can form organized armies.
  • Dragons: Ancient, powerful, and some are Player-tier threats.
  • Angels, Monsters, Insects, Beastmen: The New World is full of varied races, some of which rival nations.

World Items: Weapons of the Gods

Only 200 exist. These include:

  • The Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown: Wielded only by Ainz, contains powerful gems and can summon monsters.
  • Twenty (World Destruction-Class Items): Broken abilities like mind control over the entire world or permanent death even for immortals.

They’re so powerful, even NPCs fear them as legendary relics.

Main Plot and Themes

At its heart, Overlord is about:

  • Power and responsibility.
  • Loneliness and identity.
  • The nature of morality when you are no longer human.

Plot Arcs:

  1. Arrival in the New World – Ainz tests his power and explores the world.
  2. Nazarick’s Invasion – He infiltrates and destroys kingdoms while appearing diplomatic.
  3. Search for Players – Ainz fears other YGGDRASIL players may appear—some hostile.
  4. Conquest and Fear – Nazarick spreads terror and dominance across continents.
  5. Gods of the Past – Wild Magic implies past YGGDRASIL players changed the world centuries ago and became gods or legends.
  6. Unknown Threats – Dragons, The Slane Theocracy, and world-level threats loom.
