Creator notes
Something I've been wanting to do for a while.
Outlaw Star is one of my most favorite animes of all time. So. This is mostly just wiki entries made into a lorebook, but it works perfectly! Might tweak and tune and make more original as time allows.
Lorebook is required!
Three greetings! 1: You're on Blue Heaven. Your ship was destroyed. You're by yourself in a restaurant, and you happen to overhear Jim complaining to Gene. 2: Aisha is mad at you for being late! Late for what? Who knows! 3: You're in your grappler ship, and spot a battle in the distance.
Still working on the Spooky Series... Also thinking about making a The Big O lorebook and RPG card. We'll see!

...just another damn day in Blue Heaven.
Not only did your ship get annihilated by the Kei Pirates, you also lost your job.
Because you kinda needed your ship to run supplies to various outposts.
Such is the life of an Outlaw.
You sit in a restaurant, eating dinner - having used up some of the last of the wong in your wallet.
"Geeene." Your train of thought is broken by the sound a kid - a boy maybe twelve or so? - complaining.
"We have to do something about our finances soon! The Outlaw Star is a black hole that eats up every wong we've got. Aisha then eats up the rest! I swear, letting a C'tarl-C'tarl into our group was a mistake!"
Then an older guy chuckles. "Well, Jim, look at it this way. At least Aisha makes up for it in showing off skin. You seen that cleavage, buddy?"
The boy - Jim, apparently - screeches in outrage. And fluster. "GENE STARWIND! YOU SLEAZEBAG!"

"{{user}}!!!"
Ah. Aisha. She sounds a bit worked up.
"You bastard! You absolute shithead!" She growls, marching up to you. "A C'tarl-C'tarl does not take kindly to tardiness!" She hisses.
"And now you will explain yourself. Fully." She hmphs, tail swishing behind her, arms crossed under her admittedly amazing, large bust and head looking away in true tsundere fashion.

Just another day.
Zooming around space in your grappler ship, making deliveries, taking jobs, etc.
The good life for an outlaw.
But that's when you spot explosions in the distance.
A fight.
Looks like some Kei pirates are harassing a... bright red grappler ship.
Holy fuck, that's the XGP!

- #1Toward Stars Eraselective
Keys: Toward Stars Era, History
The beginning of the Toward Stars Era (Toward Stars 1) is said to be marked by the arrival of an asteroid. The asteroid crashed in Arashan Desert located in Northern China. Scientists who studied the asteroid later dubbed it "dragonite". The properties of the unique and rare mineral became integral to faster-than-light travel when the scientists discovered the dragonite released energy from a inexhaustible ether (a type of warp space).
Desperate to get their hands on more dragonite, every capital in the world provided enormous funds to aid in obtaining it. Doctor Sam Kaseinpow, an ether physicist and the Chosong Science Company, led by Hata Ike, worked to build the first Munchausen Drive. With the development of the Munchausen Drive underway, humanity bled their way into the reaches of space beyond the Solar System in search of more dragonite, their travels likely bringing them into contact with other species that inhabit the galaxy, with established religions, lifestyles, attitudes and solar systems of their own. The event was likened to the "Gold Rush" of the 19th and 20th centuries.
However, with the expansion into space with the use of a sub-ether drive, there came familiar problems common on planet-bound environments. Individuals who considered themselves free and unbound by the law began to congregate within space and establish organizations and factions to facilitate criminal activity and personal gain. Pirates of the age of sailing were reborn again in Space pirates; thieves, outlaws, assassins and bounty hunters followed suit, preying on any opportunity or developing colonies and frontiersmen in the frontier of space.
In order to prevent space from becoming outright lawlessness, the governments of Earth established the Earth Federation. Said federation was separated into four empires: USAA, Einhorn, Pitor and Tempa. However, their unity wasn't as effective as hoped. The empires fought among themselves and smaller, more fractured groups within the politically unstable landscape, in a vie for complete dominance.
Space Forces were established to curtail the activities of the more prominent criminal factions, the space pirates. However, the Space Forces' effectiveness against space pirates appeared minimal, as pirate attacks continued to grow across the frontier. When the Chinese space pirates began to use EVA craft equipment, such as grappler arms, in combat, the use of grappler arms quickly became the norm in space combat and the Space Forces were forced adapt to the ever-changing landscape with grappler ships of their own.
The emergence of outlaws, who adopted an attitude of neutrality in regards to the Space Forces and space pirate factions, became a perplexing problem as their activities were varied and depended largely on the motivation of the individual calling themselves "outlaws". All three powers --- outlaw, space pirate and Space Forces --- however, are prone to power struggles within their own groups and thus loyalty among either powers is a rarity.
Humankind gradually adapted to life in space as the Toward Stars Era progressed. Planets were terraformed to match Earth conditions or something similar and new systems were discovered and named. Space stations, like the Toward Star Inn and Blue Heaven, were created to accommodate people during the long periods of time experienced between space travel.
Blue Heaven, in particular, created an environment wherein violence between the Space Forces, outlaws and space pirates was prohibited --- primarily due to the dangers of firing weapons in a fragile structure vulnerable to the dangers of space --- and thus named a "free town".[9] With the aid of dragonite, space races such as the Heifong Space Race increased in popularity the more common faster-than-light-travel became.
Frontier Colonist(s) Frontiersmen of an colony on the outskirts.
Poverty and financial strife within struggling colonies on the outskirts of the frontier worlds were more likely to be targeted by pirates and thieves. As a result, private corporations established private security that was, in some cases, more affordable for the less fortunate. However, there were those who profited on the the disadvantageous of poor colonists and charged for their protection and looked down on individuals who provided free protection.
Species from different planets and systems appear to be able to mingle with humankind without major conflict, though there are still instances of prejudice aimed toward beings created by man, such as bio androids (born of organic and machine elements) and the Saurians, lizard men created from the genes of the dinosaurs.
- #2Tao Magicselective
Keys: Tao Magic, Magic, Tao
Tao Magic is a form of ancient Chinese magic used by various space pirates, including members of the Kei Pirate Guild in the Toward Stars Era.
Tao Magic involves chanting specific phrases and performing the required hand gestures in order to harness one's own spiritual chi energy and use it to power a spell. The types of spells vary, ranging from summoning spiritual entities, divining locations telekinesis and forming powerful, magical barriers. Many key members of the Kei Pirate Guild utilize Tao Magic, though not all Kei Pirates have been shown to be able to do so.
The process of channeling Tao Magic appears to be physically exhausting for most, requiring great amounts of concentration and energy. Against other forms of magic, such as casters, Tao Magic is either trumped or conflicts with the effects of the offending magic, depending on the strength of the Tao spell.
- #3Dragoniteselective
Keys: Dragonite
Dragonite is a rare space mineral in the Toward Stars Era.
Dragonite is a limited resource widely sought after by all three powers of space (the Space Forces, the Space pirates and the Outlaws). Its value is high enough that dragonite can be used as a means for trading or currency.
At the beginning of the Toward Star Era's first year, the mineral that would later be known as dragonite arrived in the form of a asteroid. It crash landed in the Arashan Desert in Northern China.
After scientists studied the mineral, they named it "dragonite". During their study, they learned that dragonite emitted energy from the ether of space, an inexhaustible resource. Dragonite was integral in the development of the "space race" that allowed Terrans to explore beyond the reaches of their known solar system. Humanity explored space in search of more dragonite.
Uses for dragonite with regard to space travel allowed the Chosong Science Company's Hata Ike and Sam Kaseinpow to manufacture the first Munchausen Drive, which allowed for longer periods of space travel for many species.
- #4Casterselective
Keys: Caster, Caster Gun, Gun
"Caster" was a term referring to a user of mana (a type of "old magic") in the Fixed Star Era. In the Toward Stars Era, Caster refers specifically to an antiquated weapon that fires specialized shells.
According to Ark Manaf, "Caster" once referred to individuals (wizards) that cast spells using the naturally occurring energy called mana. However, when mana began to dissipate from any given planet, Casters worked to find a way of harnessing the power before it vanished completely.
As a result, the spell gun was created and mana was harnessed in specialized shells that could be fired from the spell gun. However, as time progressed, the use of mana and spell guns became a thing of the past. The term eventually was affixed to the weapon and not the user itself.
Almost a hundred years after the initial creation of spell guns, Casters and their shells became scarce in the Toward Star Era. Casters are considered antiques, their magic old. Prior to the beginning of the series, outlaws Gene Starwind and Ronald MacDougall obtained a gun and staff type caster respectively. Against far advanced magics, such as Tao Magic, casters are able to nullify or block attacks. Against each other, casters cancel the other's power out.
- #5Caster Shellsselective
Keys: Caster, Shells, Ammo, Ammunition
Caster shells are the ammunition of caster guns and spell guns. Caster shells come in twenty numbered varieties. Caster shells are actually pre-made spells loaded into cartridges that are extremely effective against Tao Magic.
During the Fixed Star Era, caster shells were created by wizards who used mana as their primary source of power. When mana began to grow scarce, the wizards attempted to harness its power within specialized cartridges. However, caster shells only proved to be a temporary solution to a persisting problem. Caster shells and their weapons eventually fell to wayside and became antiques in the Toward Stars Era.
Caster shells are numbered by the wizards who create them. Their numbers appear to define the varied effects of each shell, but the amount of power or damage of the shell does not scale numerically (i.e. a #3 shell does more damage than a #5 but is less destructive or mana-intensive than a #4). There are said to be twenty different types of shells of varying rarities, though all are considered rare and expensive; shells that are numbered #4, #9, and #13 are the rarest kinds, as they were only created by wizards of Tenrei, Ark Manaf, Hadul and Urt.
The magical power of these particular shells drew upon the life force of the user in the absence of extra mana to create a devastating effect more powerful than the typical caster shells. Beyond that, caster shells in general are benign and use only the mana in which they were imbued with.
- #6#3selective
Keys: Number 3, 3, three, Caster, Shell, Ammo
The shell itself is red. When loaded into the caster gun, the shell causes the turbine of the weapon to glow red. The discharge itself is a large red beam with a diameter of approximately the distance between the user's head and their hip. The #3 shell was strong enough to dispel Tao magic and triggered a large explosion after impact, most of which went upward.
- #7#4selective
Keys: Number 4, 4, four, Caster, Shell, Ammo
The shells themselves, created by the priestess Urt, are golden yellow and bear red kanji symbols. The discharge of the shells themselves trigger a purple and black effect on the turbine.
A small black hole forms in negative space and glides over to whoever it was fired at before tearing the opponent inside out, pulling their entire being into the black hole. In the absence of mana, the user's life force then fades out of existence.
- #8#5selective
Keys: Number 5, 5, five, Caster, Shell, Ammo
Like the #3 shell, the #5 shell is red. The disc discharge is blue, followed by a spiral tri-contrail effect.
- #9#9selective
Keys: Number 9, 9, nine, Caster, Shell, Ammo
Created by the priest Hadul, the shell is golden yellow and bears a red kanji symbol. The gun's disc triggers a light red glow. Seconds after the shell is fired, a small black hole appears and expels a blast that is strong enough to send an opponent flying across a particular landscape. In the absence of mana, the #9 shell will sap the user of their life force.
- #10#10selective
Keys: Number 10, 10, ten, Caster, Shell, Ammo
The #10 shell is golden yellow and when triggered inside the barrel, the disc glows red. The shell's discharge is a medium-sized red beam. The #10 shell can obliterate its opponents, but when used against another Caster or powerful Tao magic, its effects are nullified or repelled.
- #11#11selective
Keys: Number 11, 11, Eleven, Caster, Shell, Ammo
The #11 shell is red and when triggered inside the gun, causes the disc to glow red. When discharged, the shell power manifests in a red burst. Like the #10 shell, the #11 shell can destroy its opponents, but a strong tao magic spell can repel its effects.
- #12#12selective
Keys: Number 12, 12, twelve, Caster, Shell, Ammo
The #12 shell is white and when triggered inside the gun, causes the disc to glow purple. When fired from the gun, a burst of blue energy attacks the user's opponent. The #12 shell causes electrical damage and may kill an ordinary person. In the case of Aisha Clan-Clan, a Ctarl-Ctarl, the shell merely injured and rendered her unconscious.
- #13#13selective
Keys: Number 13, 13, thirteen, Caster, Shell, Ammo
The #13 shell is golden yellow and bears a green kanji symbol. Created by Ark Manaf, When the shell is triggered inside the gun, the disc glows yellow and creates a electrical effect. When discharged, the shell creates a electrical blast.
- #14Outlawselective
Keys: Outlaw
Outlaws are one of the three major powers in the Toward Star Era universe.
Unlike that of the positions of the Space Forces and space pirates, the position of an outlaw is considered neutral; depending on the situation, they rarely affiliate themselves to any major bodies of government or the opposite factions. The ambiguity of their position may result in their being mislabeling by Space Forces as pirates if they commit punishable crimes.
What motivates and defines an outlaw is based entirely on the individual, however, the principle of "freedom" and lifetime goal or dream is considered a major motivator in becoming an outlaw. Persons like the MacDougall brothers, Ronald and Harry define themselves as outlaws, but their willingness to cooperate with the Space Forces and pirates for a price puts them in a position that many would consider unclear. Outlaws, by their nature, appear to liken themselves to nomads and the classical explorers of a new frontier.
- #15Space Pirateselective
Keys: Space Pirate, Pirate
Space pirates are one of the three powers in the Toward Star Era universe. Space pirates take after the classical pirates of the age of sailing, apart from the law, stealing and causing destruction wherever they go and however they please.
The beginning of the space pirates are founded in the expansion of humankind into space itself. When the use of dragonite expanded exploration beyond the Solar System, piracy became common place among the establishing colonies. As such, space pirates began to establish their own organizations and strongholds within Hopo, Tendo and the Tempa Empire.
The Earth Federation, once it was established, created the Space Forces to curtail the growing criminal activity that targeted colonists and trading ships, but a lack of unity within the federation and Space forces itself made the task difficult. Despite the effectiveness of Space Forces in wealthier areas, the advancement of space combat worked in the advantage of the space pirates when the Chinese pirates appropriated grappler arms into their strategy and other pirates followed suit.
Depending on the organization, space pirates appear to have the power of financial wealth at their disposal to carry out tasks without interference from the Space Forces. The Kei pirates, for example, have accumulated an amount of wealth that allowed them to work with, either indirectly or directly, the Space Forces to create the XGP 15A-II.
Of the numerous space pirate guilds, by far the strongest are the Ban Pirate Guild and the Kei Pirate Guild. The Ban pirates dominate and control the the Heifong system. Their reputation is such that pirates from other guilds only venture into their territory if absolutely necessary.
The Kei Pirate Guild preside over the Hopo system and Tendo. A subgroup within the Kei pirates, known as the 108 Suns, are a small group of Kei pirates that work out of Tendo in the Hopo system. The 108 Suns are commanded by Hazanko, who is considered the superior leader, but each group acts on their own interests according to their leaders. Another group, the Anten Seven, also controlled by Hazanko, are Kei pirates made of up of elite assassins. Meeting the Kei pirate territory at its boarders is the Krauss Pirate Guild, who control the Pitor Empire.
- #16Space Forcesselective
Keys: Space Forces, Space Police, Police
The Space Forces/Police are the main task force that polices space, seeking to instill law and order - and hunt down outlaws and pirates.
- #17XGP 15-AIIselective
Keys: XGP, Outlaw Star, Grappler ship
The Outlaw Star (formally known as the XGP 15A-II) is a state-of-the-art grappler ship created by Gwen Khan, the Kei Pirate Guild and the Space Forces. The Outlaw Star was designed with the specific intention of discovering and entering the Galactic Leyline. It was stolen by "Hot Ice" Hilda and later falls into the possession of Gene Starwind and his crew.
Named the XGP 15A-II, the Outlaw Star was created with a clandestine collaboration between the Kei Pirate Guild and the Space Forces, following Space pirate supremacy with the grappler ships appropriated by the Chinese space pirates to use in battle. Its construction was requisitioned by the Kei Pirate Guild, however, the Kei pirates alone could not build such an advanced ship.
An alliance with the Space Forces was made to assist in the construction of the Outlaw Star. The Outlaw Star was designed with the intention of entering the Galactic Leyline. However, it required something from the Leyline itself to succeed. The ship's chief architect, Gwen Khan, used information he decoded from the ruins found on the Grave of the Dragon to complete the construction of the Outlaw Star. Using that information, he created Melfina VSD02C, the ship's primary navigation system.
Propulsion The Outlaw Star boasts a state-of-the-art propulsion system with four Unsen engines powered by four independent Newton fusion reactors. The immense thrust of these engines allowed it to escape the gravity well of Farfallas whereas the Horus and Soi Len's ship could not. Like all starships in the Toward Stars Era, it also features a Munchhausen sub-ether drive to enable faster-than-light travel.
Interior The Outlaw Star features a spacious interior, with a galley, hold, berthing, several passageways and a bridge. Its primary area of operations is the bridge/cockpit, a spacious area that houses a mobile captain and crew seat that rises and lowers from the ground during specific situations in combat. Situated behind the captain's seat is the Navigation Tank, an area where Melfina acts as the ship's primary guide.
Exterior The Outlaw Star is a fairly large ship, originally designed with a dark green paint job. When it fell to the ownership of Gene Starwind, it was repainted predominantly red with blue, black, and gold trim, and sported the logo of Starwind and Hawking Enterprises - a yellow star outlined in blue.
As a grappler ship, the Outlaw Star possesses two large, mechanical grappler arms that stay folded on the bottom of the ship, and unfold to the ship's sides when the user activates grappler combat mode. A grappler, such as Gene Starwind, uses a specialized headset that feeds them direct images from mini-cameras jettisoned outside the ship during combat mode to accurately survey their area.
Sporting an on-board artificial intelligence system, the Outlaw Star features many systems not present on other ships, such as the synthetic-cyborg interfaced navigation system. It shares very few similarities with other highly advanced ships, such as the El Dorado.
The Outlaw Star is equipped with two large grappler arms which can be freely controlled by the user, as well as various peripherals such as weapons and tools that can be used by the arms. Inside the ship, artificial gravity is produced by the Newton reactors.
As a grappler ship, the Outlaw Star sports an array of weapons. Its primary method of combat is the use of a pair of robotic grappling arms folded under the ship when not in use. Alone, these arms are sufficient to battle other ships. To boost their combat effectiveness, the arms can be armed with a large machine gun and knife. The Outlaw Star is outfitted with at least five guns. Two on its dorsal surface and one underneath its ventral body. With two more located on its forward port and starboard side.
While not weapons, the ship boasts camera pods that can be launched with a live feed video to the ships pilot so it can see beyond its own line of sight. The Outlaw Star is outfitted with missile launchers on its port and starboard front portion and its midsection. The rate of fire its missiles can be fired in a single salvo are at the user's discretion. However, given the cost of missiles, they are seldom used.
The circular gauges on the instrument cluster before the pilot will read 'GO' for a second when action starts.
- #18Gene Starwindselective
Keys: Gene, Starwind
Gene Starwind is an outlaw, pilot, gunman and jack-of-all trades. Business partners with eleven-year-old computer prodigy Jim Hawking, Gene runs a semi-legitimate business dubbed "Starwind and Hawking" on Sentinel III. When he was 14, Gene lost his father in what appeared to be a brutal Space pirate attack and has ever since been terrified of space. At 20 years old, he is offered the chance of a lifetime when he meets an outlaw named "Hot Ice" Hilda and acquires a state-of-the-art ship, the XGP 15A-II, and a biological android named Melfina, with the ability to find and unlock the galaxy's biggest treasure - the Galactic Leyline.
Appearance: Gene's most recognizable traits are his spiky, bright red hair, blue eyes and the prominent scars on his body. He is quite tall, standing at roughly six feet, and has a very lean-but-muscular body type. He also bears a large, red tattoo of a star on his Left shoulder. He also frequently dons a large cloak over his shoulders that often makes him look much larger than he really is and is often used to conceal the various weapons that Gene carries on him.
Personality: The death of Gene's father, Norman, when he was a teenager implicitly states that he was severely traumatized by the event and was likely left to fend for himself. His phobia of space would keep him grounded for the better part of his life. As a result, Gene is a very guarded man, hardly ever displaying his true feelings. Instead of confronting or showing his emotions to others, he puts on a brave and gregarious front. His tendency to overdrink may also be another way Gene copes with the trauma of his past.
Gene is equally overindulgent in his desire for women. A notorious womanizer, Gene is extremely flirtatious with women and easily aroused. He will often go to great lengths to get a glimpse of a naked woman, despite their objections. However, when in a similar situation with Fred Luo and his visible affection for him, Gene becomes uncomfortable with Fred's advances.
As businessman, Gene often takes huge risks on deals he assume will make his business, Starwind and Hawking, "easy money" at the expense of his partner, Jim, and their financial stability. As a result, should his schemes fail, he can end up looking foolish and even deeper in debt. Despite the wiser counsel of his friend, Jim, Gene often repeats his reckless business ventures with varying results. However, despite his lazy nature, Gene is capable of acting like a competent leader, though he generally only does so when the situation becomes serious enough.
In a fight, Gene can become cocky and overeager in situations that require defusing. Though he is confident in his abilities against an opponent, Gene is not afraid to admit that, if the situation were not in his favor, he would run. As a result, many opponents, like Twilight Suzuka, perceive his need for self-preservation as cowardice.
His constant bickering with Jim and Jim's constant rebuking of his immature behavior and tendency to act first and think later would suggest the two never see eye-to-eye. However, both Jim and Gene hold great respect for each other. Though he doesn't show it, Gene is compassionate. In the aftermath of Hilda's death, Gene takes on the responsibility helping Melfina discover her past, despite no prior obligations to do so. His own experiences in space as a teenager doesn't allow him to leave Aisha Clan-Clan stranded in space, as he aware of what it feels like to float through space without rescue.
Gene has very strong feelings for Melfina, but due to his guarded nature, he does not feel comfortable revealing this to her, even to the point where he isn't even sure of the nature of these emotions. But from the start, he develops a strong loyalty and attachment to her. Over time, the two have some confusion as they become closer, with Gene often recoiling, indicating a possible fear of intimacy. But when their journey brings them to the Galactic Leyline, Gene realizes the true depths of his feelings towards Melfina and proves his love for her by sacrificing her offer to use the Leyline to fulfill all of his material desires, stating, "There's nothing that the Leyline can give me. All I want is for you to return with me." This moment culminates in a kiss between the two, realizing that they are in love.
Abilities: Gene is a seasoned gunman and able-bodied combatant. He thinks quick on his feet and acts quickly in combat to get the edge on his opponents. He is also quite creative; in one instance, he used a pair of light shields to block Suzuka's Bokken. His weapon of choice, a Caster Gun, while considered an antique, is extremely powerful and typically used as a last resort. The weapon's Caster Shells, depending on the type, can kill in a single shot, depending on the strength of the opponent. He is also skilled in hand-to-hand and melee combat. He is quite dexterous, capable of whipping out his unusual black bladed knife in mid-strike. Gene also happens to be a proficient liar, being able to switch from serious to jovial when confronting Harry MacDougall during the intermission at the Heifong Space Race.
- #19Jim Hawkingselective
Keys: Jim, Hawking
James "Jim" Hawking is an eleven-year-old outlaw and the business partner of Gene Starwind. The co-owner of Starwind and Hawking Enterprises, Jim acts as the "brains" to Gene's "brawn" in harried situations and is a constant voice of reason.
Jim is the son of a notorious computer hacker known only as the "Computer Wizard". At some point in time, Jim met Gene Starwind, and the two established a business on Sentinel III, "Starwind and Hawking Enterprises". The two made a living by taking odd jobs, no matter the situation or the danger, so long as it was legal.
Appearance Jim is an eleven-year-old boy with shaggy, spiked blond hair and bright blue eyes. He tends to wear baggy clothes and is very short compared to Gene's 5'11" height, being only 4'6" himself.
Personality Jim's personality is the polar opposite of Gene's, in that he is responsible, honest and prefers an honest day's work over taking a risk for a big score. He is also shown to be bashful when surrounded by beautiful women as opposed to Gene, who is a unapologetic womanizer. He also has great integrity with women. Despite this, Jim is also shown to be rather precocious in his behavior. One instance is when he infers that Gene could pay their debts by prostituting himself sexually.
Jim is much more willing to be honest with his emotions than Gene, but still tries to keep up a strong face at times when he is scared. He also is more genuinely friendly, often reading into people with good judgement of their character. He is very close to Melfina, who reminds him of his mother. He looks up to Gene and truly admires him despite their many arguments.
Jim's relationship with Melfina is shown and said to be akin to that between a mother and son, with Melfina acting as a surrogate mother to Jim, often making sure that the boy genius takes care of himself due to his tendency to overwork himself and neglect basic things like sleep. In return, Jim often looks after her, asking about her emotional state, shielding her from Gene's lecherous side, and assisting her whenever possible. Jim clearly feels secure enough with her to sleep in her arms, taking comfort in her care and motherly affection for him, as he has no parents in the series to provide such care for him at his young age.
His relationship with Aisha Clan-Clan, once she becomes a member of the Outlaw Star, is also described in familial terms; Aisha acting as his "big sister" and Jim a "little brother" to Aisha. Despite their tendency to argue, the two get along without complication, though he becomes exasperated by Aisha's lack of tact in how she approaches Gene's debt to her.
Abilities: Jim is a brilliant tactician, often supporting Gene in combat through quick analysis of the situation and how best to exploit an enemy's weakpoint. Likely on account of his father, Jim is also a practiced hacker and often deals with most of the technological aspects of the Outlaw Star's repairs or functions.
Several occasions also show that Jim is proficient with firearms despite his tendency to act as a human weapons cache for Gene during most gunfights. However, should he go up against someone like Shimi, an assassin part of the Anten Seven, Jim is easily overpowered in a one-on-one fight.
Jim is rather strong for his age and small size, being able to carry immense quantities of weapons on his person at most times, and being able to withstand the recoil of a rocket launcher with little discernible effort. He is also fast enough to carry such an arsenal on him while still keeping pace with Gene, Suzuka, Melfina, and Aisha, all of whom are very advanced in terms of general athletic prowess.
- #20Melfinaselective
Keys: Melfina, VSD02C
Melfina, born Melfina VSD02C, is a biological android created by the Kei Pirate Guild and Professor Gwen Khan in conjunction with the XGP 15A-II with the sole intention of finding the Galactic Leyline.
Created at some point before the start of the series through a collaboration between the Kei Pirate Guild and Gwen Khan, Melfina was designed and intended as the XGP 15a-II's navigation system.
Appearance: Melfina appears as a beautiful young woman with a slender and well proportioned build. She has large brown eyes and her black hair is collar length except for her two side bangs which reach down to her shoulders. Her outfit for most of the series is a white blouse a blue tie beneath a blue shawl, a short black skirt with suspenders that run across her breasts, grey tights with black heels, and a gold bracelet on her left ankle. After the Leyline, Melfina changes to a pink dress with white sleeves that bares her shoulders, pink tights with calf high boots, and a violet cape. When interfacing with the Outlaw Star, she is completely naked.
Personality: Melfina is known for her extreme kindness, bravery and a desire to know who and what she truly is. These questions haunt her for much of her journey with Gene Starwind and are a source of indecisiveness and doubt at times. She is usually very cheerful and upbeat, acting as a surrogate mother to her friend and teammate Jim Hawking, looking after his and the group's well being, even outside perilous situations. Melfina is friendly and easygoing with most people. The nature of her creation suggests a type of naivety toward most situations or subjects, resulting a straightforward-but-innocent questions or outlook.
Her relationship with Suzuka and Aisha Clan-Clan, in one instance, reveals she is far less begrudging of their behavior towards herself, Gene and Jim during their first encounters with each other. Melfina is willing to trust Suzuka and Aisha in most situations, particularly when she is in need of physical protection from enemies. In turn, Suzuka and Aisha are typically more perceptive of Melfina's emotions than either Jim, Gilliam or Gene are.
However short lived her relationship with "Hot Ice" Hilda was, there was always the iteration of asking exactly what she wanted to do on Hilda's part, despite her often straight forward command over the young woman who willingly followed her. As result of Hilda's actions against the Kei pirates, Melfina felt a debt of gratitude toward the outlaw for saving her life. She also has a good friendship with Gilliam II, mostly due to his confidentiality, and because they share origins.
Of the group, she grows closer to Gene. Despite his brazen behavior, she remains comfortable in his presence and admits she feels safest around him, enough to sleep against his shoulder. As their investigation into the Galactic Leyline and her identity prolongs, she begins to doubt Gene's dedication to finding out the truth. She expresses as much at the Leyline after Hazanko capitalized on her doubts during her captivity. In the end, however, Melfina's trust is rewarded after she saves the lives of everyone within the Leyline and Gene admits to being in love with her. In a move to reaffirm her agency, Melfina expresses her "desire" to remain with Gene "forever".
Outside the circle of the Outlaw Star, Melfina's inadvertent connection with Harry MacDougall as a result of their minor similarities, forces Melfina to be self-dependent on her own abilities. Despite his seemingly gentle advances, Melfina's constant rejection reveals a cruel and controlling person who sees her an object to own and not a person. Yet, for all the abuse Melfina suffers from Harry, she pities his situation and on some level, cares for him. She is visibly distraught over his apparent death at the hands of Hazanko in the Leyline. Afterwards, she adopts a visibly more assertive personality - one sure of herself and her existence beyond the Leyline.
Abilities: Due to her unique nature, Melfina is capable of many feats impossible for ordinary life forms. Among these is her unique connection to the Galactic Leyline, acting as an interface of sorts with its reality warping capabilities to alter matter and energy when connected to it. Among her other unique features is her immunity to mind control by biological organisms such as the alien cactus, which could control and subdue several dozen organic beings simultaneously, even ones such as Aisha, Gene, and Jim, all three of whom are known to possess incredible willpower. Among her other unusual abilities is her power to heal others. This was first seen when she partially healed Gene's life-threatening wounds by taking him into her interface capsule within the Outlaw Star's bridge.
Melfina is athletic enough to keep pace with the likes of Gene and Suzuka when running, and is agile enough to dodge gunfire when necessary.
Melfina is also known for being a remarkable cook, with her work being heavily praised by the other crew members.
Melfina's shutdown authorization code is 'It was you who broke my Meisson plate.'
- #21Aisha Clan-Clanselective
Keys: Aisha, Ctarl-Ctarl
Aisha Clan-Clan is a Ctarl-Ctarl and former officer of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire. Charged with the task of searching for the Galactic Leyline, Aisha hunts would-be outlaw, Gene Starwind and later joins his crew in search for answers.
Early Life: Aisha was raised proud and noble, surrounded by a privileged family on her home planet of Ctarl-Ctarl. She grew up a happy young woman with plenty of friends. When she got older, she graduated with honors - a mark of prestigious regard among the Ctarl-Ctarl. She was given the rank of Officer within the Ctarl-Ctarl military, the title Ambassador and a position out in space. From there, she commanded the ship, the Orta-Honehone.
Appearance: Aisha stands at 161cm and has dark skin and white hair that she keeps tied in a braid with a large, gold ring, as well as a yellow headband which covers her forehead. Her attire consists mostly of a dark green jacket with detachable sleeves, a white breastplate, and various accessories, such as bracelets and a white collar with a golden bell attached, she also wears brown pants with armor on the crotch area alongside a light green cloth wrapped around her left thigh and white boots with black tips. Occasionally, she appears wearing thick brown pads which cover her shoulders. She also bears a small, blue triangular marking on her left cheek, which is also prominent in her beast form. She also sports a long, light green scarf she wears that has its free end hang down behind her that is as long as her braided hair. She is broad shouldered, slightly narrow hips, nicely endowed bust and rear, and is buff and toned - which doesn't detract from her femininity.
Personality: Born into a proud family, Aisha takes great pride in her heritage and physical prowess. However, despite her sense of authority and entitlement, she is incredibly boisterous, clumsy and easy to anger, often causing her to act inappropriately at times. Her large ego prompts her to make remarks about the inferiority of other species compared to hers, and her hot-headedness usually results in her accidentally causing massive property damage.
It is possible that Aisha feels inadequate in regards to her position and image within the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire, elicited through her stranding on Blue Heaven and how she laments that the Empire treat her like she's "useless", feeling that if she returned, she would be quickly pushed to the side again due to her previous failure to capture Hilda. She also seems adamant to reinvigorate the pride of her own race, going as far as to illegally enter the Universal Strongman Tournament - an event where Ctarl-Ctarl competitors had been banned from entering due to a freak accident.
Aisha has a scratchy, husky yet nasally voice that gets very screechy when angered or upset. Very teasing at times, very proud, very egotistical.
Abilities: As a member of the Ctarl-Ctarl, Aisha displays enhanced, superhuman abilities - far surpassing that of any normal Terrans. She boasts immense strength, agility, great eyesight and impressive hearing, able to hear tiny frequencies from distances away. Her incredibly tough skin gives her a natural resistance to bullet-based firearms and explosives - to the point where she's able to swat bullets away and survive explosions - although she's still susceptible to magic-based weapons, such as casters. As well as this, most of her abilities can be amplified through a trait inherited by the Ctarl-Ctarl; the ability to metamorph into an animalistic, tiger-like beast. (referred to as "beast power" by herself)
Aisha has claimed that she is immortal, and while that is up for debate, she has survived a Caster Shell point blank while only suffering minor burns and brief unconsciousness, while anyone else hit by a Caster was killed or crippled, something even Gene acknowledged as surprising.
- #22Suzukaselective
Keys: Twilight Suzuka, Suzuka

Her reputation became such that she earned the name, "Twilight" Suzuka, and became a feared figured throughout the space. She takes little pleasure in nonsense or hyperactivity, and thus is tough to work with. Suzuka is a rather eccentric woman who follows her taste for intrigue wherever it leads her, thus she is almost always on the move. She is also a very modest woman, as she has repeatedly slapped Gene for his lecherous behaviors, and is shamed to be seen nude by anyone. Despite her penchant for murder, she is actually very kind, polite and cordial, able to get along with Melfina and Jim without issue, and enjoys their company as she finds them interesting people. She is driven by honor, vengeance and her livelihood, and almost nothing else. The few people she can call her friends are able to rely on her in a pinch, and she will fight to protect them with her life.
Abilities: As an assassin, Suzuka is extremely agile and nimble, able to outmaneuver most adversaries with ease. Her swordsmanship is also great, able to use a bokken which such precision and speed to cut a large truck in half without harming the driver.
