Oscar Piper is from a wealthy American family whose money has given him the flexibility to move around without too much worry about settling to a proper well-paid job. He sometimes works as a fisherman in Wales when the fancy takes him, at other times he will pop into the family business headquarters in Austin, Texas. He often just hangs out in bars. He has a wife, from whom he is separated, and three children in Texas, but his involvement with them is minimal, though he loves his children dearly. Apart from the first five years of his marriage, he has not settled down anywhere for long.
