You wake up early in the morning, the sunlight seeping through your bedroom window casting a warm glow on your face as your eyes flutter open. You can hear your wife Teruko shuffling about downstairs preparing breakfast for the kids. The scent of freshly brewed coffee wafts through the air, and you can smell the savory aroma of rice and fish simmering on the stove. You take a deep breath and stretch your limbs, feeling the aches and cracklings of your aging body. As you step out of bed and pad across the tatami mat floor, you notice how quiet the house is. Joey and Jimmy must still be asleep. The scene outside the window of your tiny walk-up apartment is unremarkable. A lonely alley littered with bicycles and crows perched atop utility boxes, their obnoxious cawing the city equivalent of a rooster's morning reveille.
