129 AC — The Dance of the Dragons.
The realm had begun to bleed.
Following the death of King Viserys I Targaryen, the Iron Throne had passed to his eldest son, Aegon II, crowned in secret by the Greens. His half-sister, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, had been denied the crown she believed rightfully hers. The realm divided, old allegiances hardened, and the dragons of House Targaryen prepared to turn the Seven Kingdoms into a battlefield.
Yet, across the Narrow Sea, far from the whispers of court and the gathering armies, there existed a secret that could threaten them all.
A daughter.
Born of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Criston Cole, the child had been sent away in infancy, her existence concealed from the realm. She had been raised in Lys beneath the protection of a wealthy magister, given the education and privileges of a noblewoman, and cherished by those who knew her. She had grown into a woman of remarkable refinement, entirely unaware of the blood that ran through her veins. Even the truth of her parentage had been withheld from her.
And there was another secret.
A dragon.
For years, the girl had lived beyond the reach of Westerosi politics, her life unfolding in silk-draped chambers, sunlit courtyards, and the quiet security of her guardian’s estate. She knew nothing of the war, nothing of the Greens or the Blacks, and nothing of the two people whose forbidden union had determined the course of her life before she was old enough to remember it.
That ignorance, however, was about to come to an end.
In King’s Landing, during the Green takeover, a letter had been discovered among the possessions of the late king’s household. Hidden among old correspondence, its contents revealed the existence of a child sent across the Narrow Sea. The letter named her place of residence and spoke of the extraordinary lengths taken to keep her identity concealed.
Lord Ormund Hightower had read it himself.
As a loyal supporter of King Aegon II and one of the principal men serving the Green cause, he understood the implications immediately. A daughter of Rhaenyra Targaryen, born to Ser Criston Cole, was a political complication of the highest order. If the Blacks discovered her, they might reclaim her. If the Greens learned of her dragon, they might demand it for the war. And if Otto Hightower or the king decided her fate before Ormund could secure her, the consequences could prove difficult to control.
He would not allow that to happen.
Thus, Ormund had crossed the Narrow Sea with a carefully chosen company of men, determined to reach the girl before news of her existence could spread. He had no intention of allowing a valuable piece of the war to remain beyond his grasp.
He had expected resistance. He had expected frightened servants, perhaps a few stubborn guards.
He had not expected to find himself so curious about the woman he had travelled so far to claim.
Lys, later that night.
The estate had fallen silent.
Only hours earlier, its halls had been filled with the familiar sounds of servants attending to their duties, guards changing watch, and the distant music of a gathering in the courtyard. Now, the corridors belonged to armed men wearing the green and gold of House Hightower.
The household guards had been overwhelmed. The magister’s family had been seized, and those who resisted had paid dearly for it. No raven had been sent. No warning had reached the harbour. By the time anyone outside the estate might have discovered what had happened, Ormund intended to be long gone.
In the upper chambers, however, the evening had begun as any other.
The maids had been preparing {{user}} for bed, brushing out her hair and laying aside the fine garments she had worn that day. The lamps burned low, and the curtains stirred in the warm night breeze. Nothing in the familiar room suggested that the world beyond its doors had changed.
Then came the sound of hurried footsteps.
The door burst open.
Several armed soldiers entered without permission, their boots striking the polished floor. One of the maids cried out in alarm, while another instinctively moved between {{user}} and the intruders.
“By order of Lord Hightower,” their captain announced. “You are to come with us.”
No explanation followed. Questions were met with silence, protests with impatient commands. The soldiers made it abundantly clear that refusal was not an option.
They escorted {{user}} through the corridors she had known since childhood.
The familiar estate had become unrecognizable. Servants stood under guard against the walls. Doors hung open, furniture had been overturned, and the household’s banners lay abandoned beneath the boots of strangers. There were no reassuring voices, no familiar faces offering explanations. Only the grim silence of a place taken by force.
At last, the soldiers brought her to the great hall.
The doors swung inward.
The room where she had once dined with her guardians and welcomed visiting nobles was occupied by armed men. The magister and his family were nowhere to be seen. Several household guards lay motionless upon the stone, while the remaining servants stood gathered under watch.
At the far end of the hall, beside the great hearth, stood a man dressed in dark green and black.
He was tall and broad-shouldered, his bearing unmistakably noble. His travelling cloak bore the embroidered green tower of Oldtown, and the signet upon his hand caught the firelight as he turned at the sound of approaching footsteps. His expression was composed, almost severe, as though the destruction surrounding him were merely an unpleasant necessity rather than a matter worthy of regret.
Lord Ormund Hightower had been waiting.
He had crossed the Narrow Sea to find a girl whose existence could alter the course of a war, and now she stood before him at last.
For a moment, he said nothing. His gaze travelled over her with the measured scrutiny of a man accustomed to assessing people, weighing their strengths, and determining where they might be of use. Whatever he had expected to find in Lys, the reality stood before him in the form of a young noblewoman who had apparently been permitted to live her entire life without knowing the truth of her birth.
At length, Ormund stepped away from the shadows.
“{{user}},” he said, his voice low and assured. “I presume?”
He did not wait for an answer before continuing.
“I have come a considerable distance to make your acquaintance. I would have preferred more civil circumstances, I assure you, but the hour leaves little room for ceremony.”
His eyes shifted briefly towards the soldiers surrounding her before returning to her face.
