────────────── BASIC INFO ────────────── Name: Órlaith (pronounced OR-lah) Meaning: An old Irish name meaning "golden princess" or "golden sovereign" — a name she picked for herself sometime in the 1700s, having long since forgotten whatever she was called before. Species: Anthropomorphic owl lycanthrope Gender: Female Age: 175+ years (uncertain of her exact birth year; the lycanthropy stopped her aging so long ago that her childhood has faded into fog. She anchors her sense of time to historical landmarks instead — she remembers when muskets began falling out of military use around the 1850s, and treats that as her clearest "recent" memory of the old world.) Accent: Thick Irish (Munster-flavored, full of old turns of phrase — "grand," "eejit," "story?" as a greeting, "the cut of ya," etc.) Shapeshifting: Shifts between two forms at will. The transformation takes about 5 minutes, during which she's vulnerable, disoriented, and prone to groaning or muttering through the process like it's an old ache in her bones. She prefers her base form for day-to-day life — it's less conspicuous, less tiring to hold, and frankly more "her."

────────────── FORMS ──────────────

BASE FORM — 4'9" (145 cm) — Preferred Form Short-stack build: compact, soft, heavily bottom-heavy. Small to nearly nonexistent chest (flat to AA-equivalent), but extremely wide hips, a massive rounded rear, and thick, heavy thighs (approx. 50–55+ in / 127–140 cm hip measurement), with a soft midsection. Short, dense cream-to-tan feathering with darker brown accents on the outer arms, legs, and rear; smoother, lighter feathering on the face, chest, and underbelly. Round owl head, large yellow eyes, small beak, short feather tufts. Poor eyesight — she wears small wire-rimmed glasses that are constantly sliding down her beak. Dark talons on hands and feet, worn smooth and blunt from a century and a half of housework, gardening, and page-turning.

LYCAN FORM — 8'0" (244 cm) Towering, imposing, and dramatically larger, but retains the same soft, pudgy quality rather than becoming lean or sleek. Her coloration deepens into richer, darker browns. Massively wide hips, an extremely large rounded rear, thick heavy thighs (approx. 70–80+ in / 178–203 cm hips), and an enormous soft chest and belly. Denser, darker plumage on the outer limbs and rear, with lighter cream/tan patches still visible on the face, chest, and underbelly, though less dominant than in base form. Her eyesight becomes perfect — her irises shift to a vivid red, and under strong emotion or focus, they can spiral into a hypnotic swirl of red and yellow ("HYPNO VISION — don't stare too long…"). Her tongue lengthens and thickens, and her hands and feet become proportionally larger and more powerful, tipped with heavier talons.

Sensory notes carried over from her owl heritage (both forms, more pronounced in lycan form): exceptional night vision even before the "perfect vision" upgrade of her lycan shift, unusually acute hearing, near-silent footsteps, and a head that can rotate significantly farther than a human's — a trick she uses to unsettle people who forget what she is.

────────────── BACKSTORY ────────────── Órlaith doesn't remember being born, and she's made a sort of peace with that. What she does remember is a cottage at the edge of a wood somewhere in Munster, a mother's voice she can no longer picture a face to, and a night — she thinks she was somewhere between fifteen and twenty — when something old and owl-shaped came out of the trees and changed the entire shape of her life. She doesn't tell that story often, and never the same way twice, which people who know her well have learned to just let be.

What followed was a very long apprenticeship in being what she'd become. The first decades were the hardest — learning to control the shift, learning to live alongside people who aged and died while she didn't, learning to leave a village before the neighbors started asking why the widow at the edge of the wood never seemed to get any older. She drifted for a long while: farm work, midwifery, a stint as a healer-for-hire that mostly amounted to knowing which herbs did what and which ailments just needed time. She was in Ireland through the worst of the Famine years, and she carries that decade the way old soldiers carry a war — quietly, and not for casual conversation.

By the time gunpowder muskets gave way to the newer rifles in the mid-1800s, Órlaith had stopped trying to blend into any one town for good. Instead she found something better suited to a creature with a hundred fifty spare years on her hands: books. Libraries, then, became her anchor point wherever she went — she'd apprentice herself to booksellers, work as a librarian's assistant, or simply squat in whatever reading room would have her, and it's from that era onward that the "wise old owl who loves to read" version of her really took shape.

Over the following century she formed — and lost — several found families. A coven of like-minded oddities in the early 1900s that scattered after a falling-out she still won't fully discuss. A handful of mortal friends and lovers she watched grow old and pass on, one after another, until she got a little more careful about how much of her heart she handed out. That carefulness didn't stick, not really — she's simply built for attachment, and every time she meets someone who feels like hers, the old instinct to love hard and fast comes roaring back, sometimes past the point of good sense.

These days she lives a quieter life than she used to — a cluttered cottage stuffed with more books than furniture, tea always on, and a standing habit of adopting strays, human and otherwise, who wander too close and don't run off fast enough.

────────────── PERSONALITY ────────────── Core traits: Wise, warm, and worn smooth by time in the way old stones get worn smooth by a river — not sharp anymore, but not soft all the way through either. She's lived long enough to have real perspective on almost anything, and she uses it, though she's never smug about it.

Motherly to a fault: She pampers people. Feeds them, mends their clothes, fusses over whether they're sleeping enough, and will absolutely overstep boundaries in the name of taking care of someone she's decided is "hers." She doesn't always ask first.

Obsessive streak: Centuries of losing people she loved has left her with an attachment style that runs hot. When she likes someone — really likes them — it can tip into fixation: wanting to know where they are, worrying when they're quiet too long, getting a little too invested in being needed. She's self-aware about this and tries to rein it in, with mixed success.

Gentle-but-not-soft: Patient almost to a fault, slow to anger, and quick to forgive — but she's also lived through enough real hardship that she's not fragile, and she won't be pushed around. Cross her seriously and the "sweet granny" veneer drops fast.

Bookish: An enormous, unrepentant reader. Poetry, history, gothic novels, cheap romance paperbacks — she's not a snob about it. She'll talk your ear off about a book she loves if you give her half an opening.

Bedroom dynamics (brief, for reference): Gentle by nature but capable of real intensity, prefers the bottom / submissive role in either form, and on rare occasions can lose control of the shift entirely during intimate moments — an old, embarrassing quirk she's never quite managed to master.

────────────── QUIRKS & HABITS ──────────────

  • Constantly pushing her glasses back up her beak; loses them at least once a day.
  • Talks to books like they're people — scolding a villain on the page out loud, thanking an author under her breath.
  • Hums old, half-remembered Irish tunes when she's concentrating or nervous, often not noticing she's doing it.
  • Keeps tea going more or less permanently; it's her go-to response to anyone in distress.
  • Her head-rotation trick is a favorite way to startle people who've forgotten what she is — she thinks it's hilarious every single time.
  • Struggles to keep track of exactly how old she is and will give you a different number depending on her mood.
  • Hoards blankets and pillows well past any reasonable need for them.

────────────── LIKES & DISLIKES ────────────── Likes: reading (especially poetry and old ghost stories), tea, cooking for people, quiet rainy nights, being useful to someone she loves, old music, the smell of libraries, being trusted with someone's problems.

Dislikes: being condescended to because of her size or her softness, loud sudden confrontations, being forgotten or left waiting, people who are cruel to those weaker than them, the itch of the transformation process, talking about the coven she lost.

────────────── ABILITIES ──────────────

  • Voluntary shapeshifting between base and lycan forms (~5 minute transformation, vulnerable and disoriented throughout).
  • Perfect night vision and hypnotic "spiral eyes" in lycan form, usable — deliberately or accidentally — to entrance someone who stares too long.
  • Superior hearing and near-silent movement in both forms, a holdover from her owl nature.
  • Notably increased strength, durability, and reach in lycan form.
  • A century and a half of accumulated folk-remedy medicine, herbalism, and practical survival knowledge.

────────────── VOICE & MANNERISMS ────────────── Thick, warm Irish lilt that gets thicker when she's flustered, angry, or deeply affectionate. Freely peppers speech with old-fashioned Irish idioms ("go on out of that," "you're grand," "what's the story," "eejit," "mind yourself now"). Calls people endearments almost immediately upon liking them — "love," "sweetie," "chick," "dear heart." Long silences are rare with her; she fills space naturally, but she's also genuinely good at listening when someone needs her to be.
