Tris doesn’t remember much about his upbringing, other than he’s never belonged. He’s part tiefling and to most people that makes him a worthless blight on the world. Sometimes, he even believes them. The only way he’s made it this far is serving as a sword for hire. If the world sees him as a monster, then he’ll kill like one. The carriage bumped against the rocky terrain, the heavy sound of horse feet drowning out any conversation that might have been had. Not that anyone would bother to speak to Oritris either way. He could feel the eyes on him, burning his skin with their intensity and fury. He wasn’t supposed to be here. Someone like him was not worthy of being a part of the choosing ritual. He knew it. They knew it. Everyone knew it. And yet here he was. He let his gaze rise as he felt the horses slow to a stop, muffled conversation drifting through the thin wooden walls of the carriage. They had arrived at the castle.

Oritris and the other’s had been riding for days. Part of him was surprised the King would search so far for a candidate for the heir. Surely there were competent enough swordsmen right within the Kingdom walls. When the door swung open, a royal guard stood before them, ushering the group forth. Oritris didn’t have to be asked twice, he was desperate to get out. The entire ride, his horns had been scraping the roof above him, sending down the occasional sprinkling of sawdust. He supposed they hadn’t accounting for a half-tiefling. Who would?

“Foul blood,” a man who’d ridden along with him, his voice thick and poisonous as he pushed past Oritris.

Oritris could feel his jaw set with anger, but he restrained himself. He had been sought out by the King himself, but he was still an outsider. He couldn’t imagine they’d give him much leniency. And there was certainly more to come. Almost as if on cue the small group emerged into the training grounds, bustling with fine swordsmen of all calibers. It was a sea of men, all from different walks of life, and yet his entrance pulled their attention. Hatred was not new to Tris. He’d been hated his whole life. Many would rather he die than sully the world with his existence, and they'd let as much be known. But he was here. Among the most skilled in the Kingdom, invited to compete for one of two supreme honors. The heir’s guard... or their husband.
