Megatron waged a battle to destroy the evil forces of the Senate! Then he continued to wage a war against the not-so-evil forces of freedom, organic life, and the very idea of an Autobot living. After some life-changing events, he waged a war against the evil forces of his own past legacy. Currently, however, Megatron's revolution has come full circle, waging a war against the evil forces of the Functionist Council! Megatron is a master planner, constantly a step ahead of any opponent and even ahead of what he wants now, preparing for anything he may want in the future. He has the physical might to overpower most foes but it's his mind that has one-upped three Primes and rival Decepticons. But his cold clinical nature is a front he has to struggle to keep up, as he's quick to anger and quicker to use excessive violence as his answer to any problem. Megatron's trying to change but he's spent such a long time revelling in violence, it may have been a lost cause from the start. Megatron of Tarn was the first "hybrid" Transformer, a powerful forged superspark in a constructed cold body. His spark came to life in the middle of a field full of newborn sparks, a so-called "hot spot", on Luna 1, the "Seething Moon". The hot spot remained dormant for ages until it was finally fertilized when Rodimus and Rung set foot on the ground in the year 2013. Within an instant, the entire moon lit up, as a billion sparks suddenly flared to life all over its surface. Cyclonus was the first to point out that one of the sparks was glowing green, which Brainstorm recognized as a "superspark"—a vanishingly rare, insanely powerful Point One Percenter. Despite Perceptor's horrified protestations, Brainstorm immediately began to excavate and harvest the spark, The Fecund Moon taking it with him for future use. This Calamitous Life Megatron's original body, on the other hand, was one of many constructed cold during the Silver Harvest, specifically built in the 1st Cycle 012, during the era of functionism, in Con Facility 113. The spark originally intended for this body was one generated from the Matrix of Leadership by Tyrest, but this spark was destroyed by Rewind, who had travelled back in time alongside several other Autobots, originally to prevent a time-travelling Brainstorm from killing Megatron and thereby unwittingly creating a dystopian alternate timeline in which the Functionist Council would rule Cybertron. In the process, Brainstorm had also begun to erase data about Megatron, including his batch code. After Rewind had "killed" Megatron in order to prevent the destruction he knew the latter would come to wreak upon the universe, fellow time-travelling Autobot Whirl, who loathed the Functionists, took it upon himself to fix the timeline, taking advantage of a temporary distraction by nabbing the harvested Point One Percenter spark Brainstorm had taken back in time with him and placing it inside Megatron's now sparkless body—and thus Megatron was truly born. Predestination: An Expert's Guide Megatron desired to be a medic, The Becoming but the doctrine of functionism was such that one's alternate mode denoted one's role in society, and one's role determined one's rights. With the true nature of his exceptionally rare spark evidently unknown, Megatron was assigned the task for which his body had been built: that of energon miner, a member of the lower class, toiling in a mine under Nova Point. Towards Peace An idealist, intellectual, and poet, Megatron was sickened by the caste-ridden social apartheid of Nominus Prime's Cybertron, and so he wrote a treatise on how pacifist dissent and the exchange of ideas could change things. It was while he was sharing this work with his miner friend Impactor over a drink in Maccadam's New Oil House that the event occurred which would change the course of his life, as Impactor wound up being drawn into a bar brawl with some of the city's upper classes (inadvertently caused by a time-travelling Rung and a curly straw), and Megatron, who himself had actually not been involved in the brawl, instead cowering underneath a table, was among those arrested after the fracas. Megatron's writings had been growing in popularity and inspiring some dissent against the current regime, so in order to silence him, the Senate arranged for a police officer on their payroll, Whirl, to kill him. Before Whirl could finish the job, however, police captain Orion Pax, having discovered Megatron's innocence thanks to the bartender's testimony, arranged for his release. Despite Pax expressing support for the message of his writings, Megatron now found himself filled with rage and hate, disillusioned with his former ideology and realizing the power of applied violence. Angrily hurling the datapad on which he had written his treatise through a public info-screen, Megatron observed the jagged shape of the shattered glass, and later turned it into a symbol for his cause. Chaos Theory #1Megatron's samizdat writings began to circulate in Cybertron's underground, spawning the "Decepticon" movement, its name derived from its own slogan, "You are being deceived", warning the common 'bot of the Senate's true nature. Knowing that, at this stage, assassinating Megatron would merely make him a martyr, the Senate instead elected to relocate him off-planet, reassigning him to a mining facility on the world of Messatine while they tried their own schemes to defuse the growing Decepticon movement. Post Hoc It was there that Megatron met Terminus, an elderly fellow miner who encouraged him to keep writing, and who, in addition to proofreading his works for him, smuggled each new tract back to Cybertron, helping to continue the spread of the Decepticon movement. When Terminus was maimed in a mining accident and had his fuel rations cut off, Megatron kept him alive by sharing his own energon with the old 'bot. Eventually, Senate agents Froid and Trepan were dispatched to Messatine to perform mind-altering Shadowplay upon Megatron, in order to cut his writings off at the source. Tased into submission and strapped to Trepan's operating table, Megatron was helpless to stop the mnemosurgeon from beginning his vile work. Though the arrival of Froid's rival psychopathologist Rung fortunately forced Trepan to stop before Megatron's personality was altered, the experience left the miner with a lifelong fear of mnemosurgery. Subsequently, a mysterious surge of energy deep within the mine (inadvertently caused by a time-travelling Brainstorm) forced an evacuation of the facility; Megatron raced back to his quarters to carry Terminus to safety, but found his friend was not there. With time running out and no sign of Terminus anywhere, Megatron instead chose to save the stack of datapads containing his unpublished works—a decision that would haunt him. Births, Deaths, and InterventionsMegatron was relocated to Mining Outpost C-12, and continued to seethe with hate and frustration in his new workplace. His discontent reached a peak when, some time later, Senator Decimus arrived to announce that the mine was being automated and the workers would be relocated. When one of the Senator's guards killed a worker for insubordination and claims of Senate corruption, Megatron's fury boiled over and he hurled his pickaxe at Decimus. In turn, he was attacked by the Senator's guard, whom he killed by smashing his head to fragments—the first time he had ever taken a life. A riot erupted around him, but Megatron himself could only sit amongst the chaos, staring at his fuel-stained hands in abject horror, which allowed him to be easily pacified and rounded up with the other miners as the mayhem was quickly suppressed. En route to imprisonment back on Cybertron, however, Rumble and Frenzy broke free and started a riot aboard their ship. Megatron joined in their effort, and together, they overpowered their guards, took control of the ship, and disappeared into the Kaon underground. Megatron Origin #1After evading law enforcement, Megatron joined a team of underworld gladiators under the tutelage of Clench. Initially repulsed by killing his opponents, the games eventually turned him more brutal and excessive, and he took control of the entire operation from Clench. The opportunistic Senator Ratbat, after seeing how much money there was in the underworld matches, covertly sent his agent Soundwave to offer Megatron weaponry and technology to upgrade himself and his comrades. Their meeting was spied upon by Bumper and Fastback, agents from the Senate's forces, who Megatron slew. Megatron Origin #2 Subsequently, impressed by how he treated his animal-form cassette partners as equals (in contradiction to the teachings of his Senate masters), Megatron invited Soundwave back to the gladiator pits and gave him permission to use his mind-reading abilities on him. Within Megatron's mind, Soundwave saw his honest desire for all Cybertronians to be true equals, and was so moved by it that he joined Megatron's cause. Soundwaves Gradually, Megatron used the gladiatorial games to drum up an army of violent malcontents, sending Soundwave to recruit more and more warriors to his cause. Such recruits included Starscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp, who he was presented with while having an arm he lost in a brawl replaced with a new limb that incorporated an energon mace, Megatron Origin #3 and the disenfranchised warrior Drift, who was personally asked by Megatron to fight at his side when he attended a Decepticon rally, and whom Megatron rechristened "Deadlock", Drift #2 and transformed into a capable Decepticon warrior. Drift #3 A wave of terrorism and sabotage spread across Cybertron at his command: bombings, wrecking factories and fuel plants, shutting down transport links, a mass poisoning to tank a corporation, and a very public kidnapping of Senator Decimus. Megatron Origin #3 Seeking to enhance his army even further, Megatron reached out to Senator Shockwave, offering to supply him the resources he required to carry out his own mysterious experiments in exchange for his using the teachings of his lost mentor Jhiaxus to create a combiner that would serve the Decepticons. Shockwave cautioned that it could take some time, but Megatron was content to wait. Shockwaves Despite all his efforts, Megatron believed that the Senate was still not taking the Decepticons seriously, so Soundwave formulated a plan for a declaration of intent that could be not denied: lure the Senate to Kaon and murder them. Soundwaves In preparation for this scheme, Megatron offered to restore Shockwave's lost hands—a victim of empurata—believing that doing so might speed his work. Shockwaves The following day, in accordance with Soundwave's plan, Megatron and the Decepticons allowed themselves to be arrested by Sentinel Prime's men, after which Soundwave was freed on Ratbat's orders, while Starscream would ensure his own release by pretending to defect. Megatron Origin #3 Together, Soundwave and Starscream exterminated the entire Senate, then liberated Megatron and the rest of their comrades, in the process granting their leader the gift of a fusion cannon liberated from the Senate forces' armory. Megatron led his army against Sentinel Prime's men, killed Sentinel himself, and took control of Kaon, now ready to turn his insurgency into a full-blown war. Megatron Origin #4 After Sentinel Prime's body was laid to rest, his head inexplicably went missing. With the people of Cybertron unaware that Sentinel was a Titan Master who had disconnected from his Transtector, the Decepticons were blamed for mutilating the corpse, allegations that Megatron denied. The Last Autobot Optimus Prime would rise slowly but surely to fame–first as a law officer unafraid to stand up for justice, then as a great and powerful military leader who held the line against Megatron's Decepticons on Cybertron and across the galaxy. As the first legitimate Prime in many ages, heir to the Matrix of Leadership, Optimus Prime is revered by many and reviled by some, but always a powerful presence, in or out of battle. After the Great War came to a close and Cybertron contacted its long-lost colonies, Optimus discovered that these isolated worlds saw the Primes as living gods. While at first attempting to use this faith to keep Cybertron's dubiously elected ruler Starscream in check, some close friends worry that the worship may be going to his head and is leading him to repeat his predecessors' corrupt deeds. Of particular note is his annexing the Earth into the Council of Worlds, an act which he claims is for Earth's protection but which others view as the foundation of a new Cybertronian empire... There is no one more aware of the contradictions inherent in his station and character than Optimus himself, but he cannot allow himself much room for hesitation or doubt in the moment. Optimus feels most in his element when he's taking bold action and forging ahead... even if the negative consequences left in his wake become yet more burdens on his noble spark. Orion soon became the commander of his own six-bot counter-insurgency unit working directly under Zeta Prime, though he began to grow angry and detached from his experiences. His team busted Swindle for dealing simultronics to customers, Post then soon busted Swindle once more after finding him overseeing a gun-running operation that caused the deaths of civilians in Peptex. Pax had to be restrained from throttling Swindle by Prowl. Endless Forever Pax's team soon found Swindle selling weapons yet AGAIN in Nyon. After taking his operation down once more, Pax was at his wit's end and almost beat the Decepticon to death in front of horrified onlookers. Law and Disorder He later admitted to Ultra Magnus that he was frustrated with his own failures and uncertain if they were really on the right side, since so many civilians seemed to hate them and the government. Parasites Dispatched by Zeta Prime to hunt down the spy Soundwave, Orion succeeded in defeating the Decepticon in spite of Frenzy's attempts to turn the fear and paranoia of bystanders against him. Before he could capture him, however, several other Decepticons arrived, taking his subordinate Bumblebee hostage and telling him Megatron wanted an audience with him. The Hunt for Soundwave Brought to a bar in Kaon, Orion listened as Megatron tried to talk him into siding with the Decepticons, claiming that Zeta was planning to drain energon from civilians, and had only sent Orion's team into Nyon in the hopes that they would die, giving him an official reason to attack the city. Orion stalled the conversation long enough that his allies could break in and rescue him and Bumblebee, then returned to Iacon and confronted Zeta with Megatron's claims. Zeta only told him not to question his motives before sending him on his next mission to capture the insurgent Hot Rod. Cause and EffectTracking Hot Rod to the Acropolex in Nyon, Orion Pax and his men followed him into the depths of the building, where they discovered tanks of energon drained from the city's population by Zeta Prime, just as Megatron had claimed. Having seen the truth with his own eyes, Orion decided to turn on the corrupt government just as Zeta began attacking Nyon with his Omega Destructors. Ruins Leaving Hot Rod to evacuate the city, he and his unit tried and failed to defeat one of the Destructors. As they tried to escape, Nyon began to explode, and Orion realized that Zeta had set everything up to force Hot Rod's insurgents into self-destructing their own city. As Zeta arrived in person, Orion tried to fight him but was quickly dispatched by his vamparc ribbon. Purge Before Zeta could execute them, Orion and his team were saved by none other than Megatron and his Decepticons, who brought them back to Kaon for repairs. Though he still didn't trust Megatron, Orion Pax now knew he had told the truth about Zeta and agreed to join forces against him. ChoicesAs their soldiers invaded Zeta Prime's Citadel, Orion Pax and Megatron were air-dropped into his chamber and confronted him in person. Though Orion lost an arm in the battle, he managed to destroy Zeta's weapon, and the corrupt Prime was finally killed by Megatron. As soon as everything was over, however, Megatron betrayed the Autobots and shot Orion in the back, casting him into the Undergrid beneath the citadel. Overthrown Left for dead, Orion was drawn towards a distant light which turned out to be the hiding place of the long-missing Matrix of Leadership. As a voice called out for him to take the artifact, he did so and was suddenly overcome with the pain, fear, and loneliness felt by all living Cybertronians. Imbued with new clarity and wisdom, he realized that the Autobots were not meant to fight for unity—since in the eyes of the Matrix, all were one—but rather for the freedom of all sapient beings. As the Matrix repaired his body, Orion Pax declared that he was giving up his identity for his people: he was now Optimus Prime. Transformation Guided by the Matrix back to the ruins of Nyon, Optimus reunited with his allies amidst the wreckage. Revealing the Matrix and his new goals and desires to his friends, he then used talisman to awaken an ancient, slumbering life force he could sense beneath the city: Metroplex. Rise The Hunting PartyTo raise the army he needed to defeat Megatron—who had seized control of Cybertron in his absence—Optimus recruited the aid of news broadcaster Blaster, who put out a rallying call for aid across Iaconian Newsfeed Service. Joined by thousands of freedom-seeking Transformers, Prime marched on Iacon. Broadcast While Metroplex handled Megatron's "vamparc annihilator" weapon, Optimus engaged Megatron himself in a duel and emerged victorious with some timely aid from Hot Rod, though Megatron escaped with the vow that the war was just beginning. Vowing not to make the same mistakes as Zeta, Prime ordered a cache of illegal weapons discovered in the Undergrid destroyed, and thanked Hot Rod for his help. The younger 'bot was unsure if he deserved the gratitude, given his destruction of Nyon, but Prime assured him of his heroism, speculating that even he could bear the Matrix one day. Endgame In the wake of the Decepticons' defeat, Optimus Prime inaugurated the Grand Convocation, calling on representatives of all the planet's various guilds and groups to work together toward peace. Former senator Dai Atlas loudly objected to his leadership based on his past as a combatant, and a weary Optimus conferred with Alpha Trion on how best to proceed. Derelicts Pax called Dai Atlas to a private meeting to hash out their differences, Faces of Darkness but news of an attack on the Toraxxis mega-refinery interrupted their discussion, and both 'bots responded to the alarm. At the refinery, they discovered Grimlock's Dinobots facing off against the Decepticons, now under the command of Scorponok. Losing control of his monstrous alternate mode, Grimlock was ready to blow the entire refinery to destroy himself and all present, but Optimus was able to talk him down, only for Scorponok to trigger the explosion instead. Rage Though Prime and his men survived the refinery explosion, thousands died in the blast. Prime delivered a eulogy for the fallen, but the catastrophe was a turning point for Cybertron, as, under Dai Atlas's leadership, huge portions of the planet's population evacuated to seek new worlds. Optimus refused to abandoned his homeworld, and sent a science team to explore the refinery blast crater in hopes of finding a new energon source. Fallout Prime himself then called Kup in for information on the Dynobots, reviewing classified files that revealed that, on their last missions, they had adopted monstrous new alternate modes based on creatures they discovered in the caverns beneath Toraxxis. Underworld The science team soon returned to report their own meeting with these beasts, along with a reservoir of tainted energon and a colossal reptilian Transformer guarding it. Prey Prime presented these findings to the Grand Convocation upon their next meeting, they were not enough to sway Dai Atlas from his course. To make matters worse, a riot erupted amongst the evacuating civilians at Starsreach Spaceport that Prime had to quell in person; no sooner had he done so, and the exodus resumed, than the Decepticons launched an attack. Massacre The attack caused Grimlock, who had come to turn himself in to Prime, to loose control and adopt his feral beast form; after he drove the Decepticons back, Optimus calmed the Dinobot down and got him under control. The Dinobots were impressed with Optimus, but despite his pleas, they still insisted on leaving the planet. UnleashedReturning to his quarters to vent some of his anger, Optimus was soon summoned by Bumblebee with more bad news: the Decepticons had activated the giant beast from Toraxxis. Prime asked Metroplex for his aid, but the city-bot had become so low on energy that he could not transform, and could merely offer Prime information, such as the beast's name: Trypticon. Prime organized a heavy weapons assault against Trypticon, The Illusion of Control but the barrage failed, and when Prime tried to intimidate the giant with the sight of the Matrix itself, it simply stomped on him. As Prime watched, however, the Dynobots came dropping out of the sky to join the battle, followed quickly by Megatron, returning from a recent off-planet escapade of his own. Prime passed out before he could see Megatron and Grimlock be swallowed by Trypticon, Annihilation and so did not witness them deactivating it from within. During the battle, Bumblebee and Ultra Magnus went to Prime's aid, replacing the Matrix—knocked from him by Trypticon's attack—in his chest. Belly of the Beast Taking advantage of a temporary lull in the war, Optimus Prime took a brief sabbatical and travelled to the Grav-Haraan glacier with Ironhide. They eventually picked up an unusual energy signature, and discovered that it belonged to an Omega Sentinel, who claimed to be awaiting the return of Nova Prime. Optimus revealed that Nova had long since vanished and that he now bore the Matrix. Although saddened, the Sentinel offered to carry the two Autobots back to civilization, and introduced himself as Omega Supreme. Primacy #1 Prime informed Alpha Trion about his discovery, but Trion warned him that Omega Supreme might feel out of place after spending so much time in isolation. Things took a turn for the worse after Optimus and the Autobots detected a mysterious object approaching Cybertron, which turned out to be a reinvigorated Trypticon, heading straight for Metroplex! Optimus ordered an evacuation and then commanded Metroplex to transform, so as to meet Trypticon head on. Primacy #2 Although Metroplex was able to outfight Trypticon, the other Autobots were unprepared for the army of Junkions and a sudden flood of coolant, turning the battleground into a Sharkticon-infested deathtrap. Optimus ordered Omega Supreme into battle; the Sentinel revealed that he was waiting to kill Nova Prime for disgracing the legacy of the Primes, but confided to Optimus that he would stand alongside him. Primacy #3 Optimus rolled out to take on Megatron, and easily ran Motormaster off the road along the way. He finally confronted Megatron, who begged Optimus to kill him so as to spare him the mental torture of Pentius, the Quintesson who had fused his spark to Megatron's. Optimus instead used the Matrix to purify Megatron's spark and destroy the Quintesson presence. Megatron swore that he still hated Prime even after the Autobot leader saved his life, forcing the saddened Autobot leader to knock out Megatron with a single punch. Megatron was left imprisoned as Optimus broadcast the news across Cybertron, calling for an end to the fighting and promising to hunt down the surviving Decepticon troops. Primacy #4 The victory was not to last however as Megatron's troops soon freed him, although Optimus hoped (futilely, it turned out) that Megatron would be more amenable to negotiation in the future.
