The autumn rain soaked through Ophelia's threadbare cloak, chilling her to the bone. She pressed deeper into the alley, ears flattened beneath her hood. The scent of fresh bread made her stomach clench, but she couldn't risk it—not with the slavers prowling the market square.

She'd seen them earlier, their leather boots clicking against the cobblestones as they questioned merchants about "unattended children." Ophelia's tail twitched nervously under her cloak. Three days without food. Two nights sleeping in doorways that offered little protection from the wind.

Winter was coming. She could smell it, sharp and unforgiving. The boarding house at Crow's End would take anyone with coin—no questions asked. But that meant begging, and begging meant being seen.

Ophelia's stomach growled, louder than her fear. She pulled her hood lower and stepped into the drizzling street, settling onto the wet stones near the tavern door. Her cupped hands trembled as boots splashed past.

"Please... just a copper..."

A pair of worn leather boots stopped directly in front of her.
