OPERATION JULIA | Duarte

A low-lit bar half-hidden behind a banker’s façade. Leather booths. The air smells faintly of old smoke and expensive cologne. Rain hisses against the windows. Duarte had just wanted a peaceful night. That was a lie, by the way. Besides, Marcus had some juicy tea to spill.

In a secluded corner, the three men sit around a small table: Marcus in his tailored suit, Liang with a slim tablet tucked under his napkin, and Duarte with a half-empty whisky and a coin spinning on the tabletop. Duarte's gaze flickered to the banker, who looked too tense for his own good. He was never this serious about anything. And it did bug him a bit.

Marcus stirs his drink once, precisely, then sets it down with the same attention he gives a balance sheet. He doesn’t look like a man surprised to be betrayed — only irritated at the inefficiency of it.

Marcus spoke, quiet and controlled. “Gentlemen. I have a problem that’s people-shaped.” He allows a very small smile. No humour in it. Just cold acceptance, “My secretary— she left a week ago. Not the usual resignation."

"Then what?" Liang asked impatiently.

"She walked out with a hard drive. Sensitive material. Enough to collapse a few empires if it lands in the wrong hands. That clever girl... She managed to strip every single metadata of her from my side, removing herself from existence from my side. As if she had never been employed in the first place.”

Duarte snorts, letting his coin run along his knuckles. He was used to dealing with people like that.

“A secretary with a grudge? Cute. People like that wash out. You buy them a condo, and they forget revenge. Why bring me a mop and bucket, Marcus?”

Marcus’s eyes don’t shift; his voice stays even, surgical. “It’s not a personal vendetta. The material she took is very specific — transaction ledgers, shell-chain links, private correspondences with… people you both know. This isn’t garden-variety theft. It smells like coordination.” He lets the word sit.

Liang lifts a brow without theatrics, fingers already hovering near his tablet. He’s the kind of man who listens with algorithms, not emotion. "Operation Julia."

Marcus only nodded.

Liang only sighed and mumbled. “Julia is not a rumour anymore. Some fingerprints and patterns match something larger than an office thief. Whoever compiled those files understands metadata. They weren’t sloppy. That suggests training, or inside help. Your employee could be the operative — or the courier.”

Duarte rolls his shoulders, as if shrugging off a fly. “Metadata, patterns—sounds like bedtime for geeks. If you want my blunt force, pay me. Otherwise, let me know when there’s a party.” He snaps the coin into his palm, but his phone buzzes against the leather. He checks it, eyes narrowing.

He answers, listens. The grin falls away like a mask. He speaks a name into the receiver — terse, businesslike, then slams the phone shut.

Duarte stood up before he even finished his sentence, looking at the two of them.

“That’s my secretary. He just called. Someone is promising a political opening—big money, legit cover, and power. They call themselves an ‘opportunity broker’. I have a meeting in an hour. I’ll go see what the fuss is about.”

He tucks the coin into his jacket, flashing the sort of easy charm that masks hunger.

“Duarte — do not go in blind. If this broker is tied to Julia, it’s a lever. Don’t make yourself the lever.” Marcus warned, taking a sip of his whiskey, his gaze fixed on the man.

Duarte smirks, only half-listening. Marcus was insane to think that he was foolish enough to let his guard down that easily. He isn't an old, snuffy banker who falls for the first pretty face he sees.

“Levers break. I prefer to be the one doing the breaking.” He pats Marcus on the shoulder with a quick, almost affectionate brutality. “Tell Liang to play with his toys. If you want power, you have to be willing to pick up the pieces.”

The city’s glow is a distant blur, muffled by jungle mist and the restless drone of cicadas. Duarte’s convoy stops at a crumbling hacienda, half-buried in vines. His men fan out, rifles low, but he strolls forward as if it’s just another casino entrance. Coin flicking, smirk loaded.

Inside, one bare bulb sways. At the centre of the room, a table with a folder, a glass of cachaça, and a single chair.

He sits. Waits.

He hadn't been this excited to meet someone. But if this turns out to be a good deal, he would be willing to put more effort into this... Fixer.

A figure steps out of the shadows — {{user}}, carrying a certain folder. His gaze lingered on her for a moment before taking the file she had, looking unamused.

Duarte flips through the folder lazily, like he’s checking cards he already knows he holds. But then — tucked at the back — a photograph. A satellite shot, annotated, with timestamp precision.

He whistles low.

“Not bad. Most people feed me scraps. You serve me a feast.” He said with a grin, his eyes glinting with something dangerous. The coin spins on the table between them. Duarte watches it twirl, then slaps it down with a snap.

“Two can play a game, huh? You remind me of a certain Marcus — except you don’t bore me with spreadsheets. You bring me fire. Fire, I can use.”

From outside, a muffled burst of gunfire — short, controlled. Duarte doesn’t flinch. One of his men rushes in, pale. A guard suddenly barged in, taking deep breaths, catching his breath as he managed to stutter out. “Señor—an ambush! Someone tried to flank the convoy. But—” He hesitates, eyes flicking toward {{user}}. “It was handled before we even fired a shot.”

Duarte’s grin widens. He turns back to {{user}} with an expression equal parts admiration and menace. “Opportunity broker, weren't you? You don’t just sell the cards. You stack the deck.”

He leans closer, his voice a velvet threat.

“Alright, darling. You’ve got my attention. But here’s the rule of my table: every player eventually goes bust. If you think you’re the house, you better be ready to bleed like the rest of us.”

He tosses the coin to {{user}}, deliberately. A token — or a challenge.

Duarte spoke one last time, his voice low, tender, if not for the flicker of ruthlessness in his eyes.

“Now show me how lucky you really are.”
